Yes, but only if your exact motherboard model supports a hardware BIOS Flashback feature. This feature lets some boards update firmware without a working CPU; it is not available on every motherboard, and the steps vary by model. Check the board’s official manual or support page before downloading a BIOS file or connecting power.
How to tell whether your motherboard can update BIOS without a CPU
Find the motherboard’s full model name and hardware revision, then open its manufacturer support page and manual. Look for a documented, button-based feature such as ASUS USB BIOS FlashBack, MSI Flash BIOS Button, ASRock BIOS Flashback, or GIGABYTE Q-Flash Plus. The feature must be supported by your exact board; support on another model from the same brand does not count. ASUS advises checking the product specifications or manual, while MSI says its CPU- and RAM-free procedure is available only on models with a Flash BIOS Button.
Do not confuse Flashback with an ordinary BIOS update utility. A standard in-BIOS update generally requires a working system that can enter the BIOS setup. Flashback is a hardware capability built into certain boards; a software utility or a BIOS update option alone does not establish that a board can flash without a CPU.
See the manufacturers’ instructions: ASUS USB BIOS FlashBack, MSI Flash BIOS Button, ASRock BIOS Flashback, and GIGABYTE Q-Flash Plus on the B760 AORUS MASTER DDR4 Rev. 1.0 support page.

What to check before you start
- Exact motherboard model and revision: Match the BIOS download and procedure to the board, including its hardware revision where the manufacturer distinguishes revisions.
- CPU compatibility: Check the official CPU support list for the required BIOS version. If a supported processor is not booting because the installed BIOS is too old, Flashback may offer a way to update it without an older CPU.
- Feature and equipment: Confirm that the board has the documented Flashback feature, the correct button and USB port, and the power connections specified in its manual.
- File and USB requirements: Follow the board-specific instructions for the BIOS file, filename, USB format, partitioning, and drive location. These details are not universal.
ASUS’s CPU compatibility and boot troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the CPU support list and required BIOS version, and checking for USB BIOS FlashBack when there is no older supported CPU available.
Why there is no universal Flashback recipe
The manufacturer examples below illustrate differences in requirements, not interchangeable instructions. They apply to the cited guidance or board, not automatically to every model from that brand. Use your exact board’s manual if it differs.

| Feature and example | Published procedure details | What to verify on your board |
|---|---|---|
| ASUS USB BIOS FlashBack | The cited ROG guide specifies a USB drive of at least 1 GB, FAT16/32 with MBR and one partition, the exact board’s BIOS file renamed using BIOSRenamer, and the dedicated FlashBack port. Its example says to shut down without removing power, hold the button for three seconds until the LED blinks three times, then wait for the light to go out. | Whether the exact board supports FlashBack, and its USB, file, port, button, and indicator instructions. |
| MSI Flash BIOS Button | The cited MSI procedure is for boards with the button. It specifies FAT32, the BIOS file for the motherboard model extracted and renamed MSI.ROM, CPU power and 24-pin power connected, and the drive inserted into the rear port labeled BIOS. Press the Flash BIOS Button and wait for the indicator to go out. |
Whether the board has the button and the required port, power leads, filename, and completion signal. |
| ASRock BIOS Flashback | ASRock describes its feature as operating without a CPU, RAM, or graphics card. Its published example uses a FAT32 drive with the extracted BIOS renamed creative.rom at the drive root, the 24-pin power connector, the designated USB port, and a button press of about three seconds. Blinking indicates activity; the LED stopping indicates completion. |
The target board’s exact procedure. ASRock also publishes model-specific instructions; its example lists a solid green LED or no LED as troubleshooting conditions. |
| GIGABYTE Q-Flash Plus | The cited B760 AORUS MASTER DDR4 Rev. 1.0 page describes updating without CPU, memory, or graphics card and without entering BIOS. Its example calls for the BIOS file named gigabyte.bin, the Q-Flash USB port, 24-pin and 8-pin power connections, and the Q-Flash Plus button. |
Whether the exact model and revision include Q-Flash Plus, along with the required file, port, power leads, and button procedure. |
Safe procedure for a CPU-less BIOS update
- Confirm Flashback support. Use the exact motherboard model and revision to check the official support page and manual. Do not proceed based only on the brand name or the presence of a regular BIOS update utility.
- Download the matching BIOS. Get the file from the manufacturer’s page for your exact board. Extract and rename it only as that board’s instructions specify; do not use another model’s BIOS file or filename convention.
- Prepare the USB drive. Apply the stated filesystem, partition, capacity, filename, and root-directory requirements. Use the designated Flashback USB port, which may be labeled on the rear I/O panel.
- Connect power and set the board state. Connect the power leads required by the manual. Leave the CPU, RAM, or graphics card installed or removed as the specific procedure directs; supported configurations differ.
- Start the flash and wait for completion. Press or hold the correct button for the stated time. Watch the board’s indicator and wait for its documented completion signal before removing the drive or changing power.
- Verify the BIOS version. After the board can boot, check the resulting BIOS version in setup or the manufacturer’s documented method.
What to do if the flash does not start or the CPU is not recognized
If the Flashback indicator does not behave as expected
Do not guess at the meaning of a light or repeat the process using a different BIOS file. Compare the USB format, filename, file location, dedicated port, power leads, and button sequence with the exact board manual. ASRock’s example identifies a solid green LED or no LED as conditions to troubleshoot; indicator meanings and recovery steps can vary by model.
If the board lacks Flashback
The ordinary update route may require a working, supported CPU and access to BIOS setup. If you do not have one, contact the motherboard manufacturer or a qualified repair provider about the options for that model. ASUS advises contacting its service center when its documented troubleshooting does not resolve the issue.

If the new CPU is not detected
Check the official CPU support list and the BIOS version required for that processor before concluding that the CPU or motherboard is defective. If the CPU is supported but the installed BIOS is too old to boot with it, use Flashback only if the exact board supports it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not interrupt the update
Keep power connected and leave the USB drive in place until the board’s indicator shows completion. ASUS warns that removing the drive, disconnecting power, turning on the system, or pressing CLR_CMOS during its FlashBack process can interrupt it and prevent booting. MSI warns not to power off during its refresh because that may damage the BIOS chip.
