To update VirtIO drivers in an existing Windows 11 VM, get trusted, current VirtIO driver media on the Linux host, attach its ISO to the VM, install the needed drivers in Windows, then reboot and verify them in Device Manager. You can also use Windows Update when it offers a relevant Red Hat driver update. Keep the guest’s storage driver in place if Windows boots from a VirtIO controller.
Choose an update route

Red Hat documents both routes for Windows 10, Windows Server 2016, and later. The exact Optional updates offering is not guaranteed for every Windows 11 VM. If no relevant update is offered, use updated installation media.
Get the VirtIO driver ISO
Use binaries from your Linux distribution’s supported package or the upstream project’s documented distribution route. The upstream virtio-win project describes distribution-neutral ISO and VFD images and directs users seeking binaries to Fedora’s VirtIO documentation. Check the maintained source for the current file; a version shown in a download directory is only current for that listing’s date.
A stable download index listed virtio-win-0.1.302.iso on 2026-08-28, but that is a dated listing, not a lasting latest-version claim. See the stable download index and confirm the available file and its provenance before installing.

Avoid using arbitrary binaries built locally from source for an ordinary Windows guest. The project warns that source-built binaries may be unsigned or test-signed and may not load by default in Windows.
Update an installed Windows 11 guest using an ISO
- Identify the host distribution and installed drivers. The package name and media location vary by distribution. Red Hat’s RHEL 8 guide uses its host package manager to update the
virtio-winpackage; do not assume its package commands apply to other Linux systems. - Prepare and attach the ISO. On the host, update or obtain the driver media using the supported route for your distribution. Attach the ISO to the VM as virtual storage. In Red Hat’s RHEL 8 package example, the ISO path is
/usr/share/virtio-win/virtio-win.iso; your path may differ. - Run the guest-tools installer. In Windows, open the mounted ISO. For a 64-bit guest, Red Hat’s graphical procedure runs
virtio-win-gt-x64.msi. In the installer’s Custom Setup screen, select the drivers needed for the devices configured in your VM, complete the wizard, and reboot. Use the x86 MSI only for a 32-bit guest. - Alternatively, update a particular device. If you do not want to run the guest-tools installer, use the mounted media to update the relevant device’s driver in Windows. Select the driver that matches the virtual device and controller actually configured for the VM.
- Verify the result. Open Device Manager, inspect the relevant device’s Properties and Driver tab, and check Driver Details. Check the network, storage, and other VirtIO devices present in the VM rather than assuming one installer action updated every device.
Red Hat says its VirtIO drivers are WHQL-certified against the latest Windows 10 and 11 releases available at the time of each respective driver release. That qualification is release-specific; it does not guarantee certification for every later Windows build.

Update through Windows Update
- In Windows, open Settings → Windows Update → Advanced options → Optional updates.
- Review the available driver updates and install a relevant update from Red Hat if one is offered.
- Restart if Windows requests it, then inspect the affected device’s driver information in Device Manager.
The update route is convenient, but its availability depends on what has been published for the guest. If the needed VirtIO driver is absent from Optional updates, use attached updated installation media instead.

Windows Setup does not include VirtIO drivers as inbox drivers for VirtIO storage. If you are installing Windows onto a VirtIO storage device, supply the appropriate storage driver during setup from the VirtIO ISO or a VFD. For an already installed VM, do not remove or change its boot storage controller or driver unless you have confirmed Windows has the driver required by the replacement configuration.

Red Hat warns that older VirtIO drivers can cause network connectivity problems with newer QEMU versions, which is why it recommends keeping drivers current. Its RHEL 8 guide also cautions that reinstalling drivers can restore Windows network configuration to DHCP. If your guest uses customized network settings, back them up and follow Red Hat’s instructions to restore them after a reinstall.
Keep driver updates separate from Windows 11 VM setup
Updating guest drivers does not configure the VM’s firmware or virtual TPM. In its documented RHEL 8 environment, Red Hat’s Windows 11 VM setup uses the host packages edk2-ovmf, swtpm, and libtpms, with UEFI boot and a virtual TPM 2.0. Those are setup details for that environment, not steps in the driver update workflow.

What an update can and cannot promise
VirtIO drivers let Windows use paravirtualized virtual devices, including storage and networking, as well as other virtual devices exposed by QEMU/KVM. Red Hat presents them as a way to improve Windows VM performance, but the cited guidance does not establish a specific performance gain for an individual VM. The practical reasons to update are to use drivers appropriate to the guest devices and reduce compatibility risks such as the network issues Red Hat associates with older drivers on newer QEMU versions.
