OCM does not require a dev → staging → production upgrade order. For teams that use those environments, promoting the same reviewed add-on change through each one is a sensible operational pattern: validate in development, check it in staging, then release it to production under local change controls. Confirm the add-on’s own release and compatibility guidance before starting; its version may differ from the overall OCM release.
What OCM controls—and what your team controls
Open Cluster Management (OCM) provides mechanisms for installing add-ons on managed clusters and controlling their rollout. A hub-side add-on manager applies agent manifests to managed clusters through ManifestWork. The ClusterManagementAddOn resource declares and configures an add-on; a ManagedClusterAddOn enables it for an individual managed cluster. OCM also supports placement-based targeting and rollout strategies.
Those mechanisms can help you target development, staging, and production groups, but OCM does not prescribe those environment names, their order, acceptance criteria, or promotion gates. Treat the sequence below as an operational recommendation, and define health checks, production timing, and rollback locally.
How to update OCM add-ons in dev, staging, and production
- Before dev: check versions and compatibility. Read the relevant OCM release notes and the add-on’s own release and compatibility notes. Determine the target OCM and add-on versions independently; do not assume they must match. OCM’s upgrade guide notes that some add-on versions differ from the overall OCM release version. The guide is published under the OCM v0.16 documentation path, so reconcile its procedure with the notes for your target release before applying it: Upgrading your OCM environment.
- Dev: apply and inspect the intended change. Use placement and add-on configuration resources to target your development cluster group. Check that the add-on is enabled on the intended managed clusters and inspect the relevant add-on and configuration status, including the effective configuration. OCM documents configuration at default, install-strategy, and per-cluster levels, with precedence and status references: Add-on management. The developer guide explains the roles of
ClusterManagementAddOnandManagedClusterAddOn: Add-on Developer Guide. - Staging: promote the reviewed change. After your team’s development acceptance checks pass, promote the same reviewed version and configuration to the staging group. OCM’s placement and rollout mechanisms support targeting and rollout behavior; your organization defines the checks that must pass before promotion.
- Production: promote under your production controls. After staging checks pass, apply the reviewed change to production using your team’s production window, monitoring, and rollback procedure. The OCM sources cited here do not establish a universal production health-check list or rollback sequence.
- Verify the result. For OCM component upgrades, follow the checks in the upgrade guide. For add-ons, inspect their status and the effective configuration in the hub. A changed configuration by itself does not prove that the add-on rollout succeeded.
Check the release context before upgrading
The OCM release page lists v1.3.1, dated 19 May 2026, as a patch release addressing an add-on v1beta1 API conversion issue. Because release information changes, verify the current notes before acting: OCM releases. The project describes its release cycle as approximately three to four months; that is an approximate cadence, not a promised date for a future release.
#1 Best Overall
The developer guide’s compatibility statements are version-specific. It says OCM v1.0.0 requires addon-framework v0.9.3 or later, and notes breaking changes to automatic installation in addon-framework v0.10.0. Do not generalize those statements to other release combinations; check the documentation for the versions you plan to run: Add-on Developer Guide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Make the promotion path auditable
For each environment, record the intended add-on version, configuration, target cluster group, promotion decision, and the status evidence your team uses to approve the next stage. Keep the artifact and configuration consistent across stages unless a deliberate, documented change is required. OCM supplies placement, configuration, and rollout mechanisms; the promotion gates and evidence policy are yours to define.
For architecture and lifecycle context, see OCM’s Add-ons documentation. It describes the hub-side manager and managed-cluster agents, including the use of ManifestWork to apply agent manifests.
