To update GoPro firmware from your phone, connect the camera to the GoPro Quik app and follow any update prompt it offers. Your phone needs Internet access, and GoPro describes Wi-Fi as part of the app-update setup. The exact update and menu instructions depend on your camera model.
Update your GoPro using Quik

Install or open GoPro Quik on a smartphone or tablet. GoPro lists Quik as an app-based update method that requires a smartphone or tablet and Wi-Fi. See GoPro’s model-specific Product Updates directory for the instructions that apply to your camera.

Make sure your phone has Internet access, turn on the camera, and connect it to Quik by following the app’s on-screen instructions. GoPro’s owner manual says the app checks for camera software when it connects and explains how to install an available update.

If Quik offers an update, follow its on-screen instructions until the process is complete. The prompts can vary by app version and camera model, so use the instructions shown for your camera rather than looking for a universal button sequence.

Check the installed software version in the camera’s About or Camera Info menu. The path varies: the HERO10 manual gives Dashboard > Preferences > About > Camera Info, while the HERO6 manual gives Preferences > About This GoPro. Follow the path in your own model’s manual.
Keep the camera powered during the update
Do not remove the battery or SD card while an update is running. GoPro’s MAX2 owner’s manual warns: “Do not remove your battery or SD card from your GoPro while the update is in progress. Removing your battery or SD card during an update may permanently damage your GoPro.”

If Quik cannot update the camera
GoPro provides model-specific manual update instructions in its Product Updates directory. The documented microSD-card route uses a computer: download the update for the exact camera model, extract the files, transfer the UPDATE folder—not the ZIP file—to the card, safely eject the card, insert it into the powered-off camera, then turn the camera on. GoPro’s documented manual procedure requires at least 20% battery and says the camera starts the update automatically. These details apply to that manual route; check your model’s page for its exact procedure.
If the documented manual updater reports “CAMERA UPDATE FAILED,” GoPro’s support instructions say to remove and reinsert the battery, then restart the process from the beginning. Follow the guidance for your exact model because camera designs and recovery steps can differ.

Which update route should you use?

Quik: Use this when you have a smartphone or tablet with Internet access and Wi-Fi, and Quik recognizes the camera and offers an update.

Manual microSD update: Use this as an alternative if Quik cannot update the camera and GoPro provides manual instructions for your exact model. It requires a computer and access to the camera’s microSD card.

The update available and its release notes are model-specific. For example, GoPro’s update page lists HERO11 Black v2.32, dated January 13, 2025, as a general bug-fix update, and LIT HERO v2.10.00, dated April 14, 2026, with feature additions and bug fixes. Check your model’s page for its current version and notes.
