When an upstream API changes, update the MCP tool’s full integration contract—not just its schema. Compare the API’s new request, response, error, and authentication behavior with the tool’s description and schemas, revise the adapter that translates between them, then test representative successes and failures against the MCP protocol and SDK versions you deploy.
What to review when an upstream API changes
An MCP tool is the public interface between a caller and the upstream API. Trace the change across that interface and the code that implements it. A schema edit by itself may leave the handler sending outdated fields, parsing an obsolete response shape, or mishandling authentication and errors.
- Upstream contract: endpoint and HTTP method; required and optional request fields; response structure; error codes and behavior; authentication requirements.
- MCP contract: tool name and description; accepted arguments; input schema; output schema or structured result; and which upstream values are exposed to the caller.
- Adapter behavior: request construction, response parsing and mapping, authentication assumptions, and translation of upstream failures into MCP results.
- Version context: the deployed SDK, transport, and negotiated MCP protocol revision.
The MCP release dated July 28, 2026 describes expanded JSON Schema support for tool input and output. The TypeScript SDK v2 documentation says calls are validated against tool schemas before handlers run. Those protocol and SDK details make schema alignment important, but they do not replace checking the handler’s actual upstream request and response mapping. See the 2026-07-28 MCP specification release and the TypeScript SDK v2 documentation.

Update the tool in six steps
- Identify the upstream change. Compare the API’s old and new documentation or changelog. Record what changed in endpoints, methods, required or optional fields, responses, errors, authentication, and behavior.
- Trace affected fields through the tool. Follow each changed upstream request field back to the MCP argument that supplies it. Then trace response fields forward to the MCP result. Check whether the tool description still accurately explains what callers can provide and receive.
- Revise the public schema where needed. Update input or output schemas when the tool’s public contract changes. Keep them consistent with the arguments the handler accepts and the result it returns. MCP’s 2026-07-28 release describes support for JSON Schema 2020-12 tool schemas; the validation behavior and implementation details depend on the SDK and version you use.
- Update the handler and adapter. Change request construction, response mapping, authentication handling, and error translation to match the new API contract. Account for renamed, optional, or missing fields instead of assuming the old response shape remains intact.
- Check SDK and protocol compatibility. Read migration guidance for the language, SDK version, and protocol revision actually deployed. Do not apply a migration step from one SDK version or language to another without confirming that it applies.
- Validate and document the result. Test representative calls and failures, then record the supported upstream behavior, SDK version, and MCP protocol revision, along with any breaking change callers need to know about.
Test the complete path, not only schema validation
Schema validation can catch invalid tool arguments, but it cannot establish that the handler builds the right upstream request or turns the resulting response into a useful MCP result. Exercise the integration end to end using cases selected for the actual API change:

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- A valid call using the changed input fields.
- A successful upstream response with the new or modified fields.
- Missing or optional fields, if the API’s contract changed in that area.
- Representative upstream errors, including any changed error codes or authentication failures.
- The final MCP result, confirming that callers receive the intended data or a clear failure rather than a parsing error or misleading success.
These are practical engineering checks, not a universal test suite prescribed by MCP. The precise cases depend on the API, handler, and SDK you use. The TypeScript SDK migration guidance for protocol revision 2026-07-28 and C# SDK versioning guidance explain version-specific compatibility concerns; they are not interchangeable instructions for every language or deployment.
Choose how to handle a breaking API change
The right approach depends on whether callers need the old behavior to remain available and whether the upstream API supports both versions. These are implementation choices, not strategies that MCP documentation ranks universally.

| Approach | When it may fit | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| Compatibility adapter | Existing callers need a stable MCP-facing contract while the upstream request or response changes. | Keep the translation explicit: map the stable MCP arguments to the new upstream fields, and map the new response back to the result the tool promises. Test both sides of that mapping. |
| Immediate migration | Callers can move to the changed tool contract without a transition period. | Update the description and schemas along with the handler, and document breaking changes for callers. |
| Support old and new upstream versions | The upstream API offers multiple versions and the integration must serve callers across a transition. | Make version selection and differences in fields, authentication, errors, and results explicit. The available sources do not establish a universal MCP mechanism for version selection; it depends on your implementation. |
Keep MCP protocol and SDK changes separate from API changes
An upstream API migration does not automatically require a protocol migration. First determine whether the change affects only the upstream adapter or also the MCP-facing contract. Then check the protocol revision and SDK compatibility information for your deployment before changing SDK or transport behavior.

Migration guidance is specific to its SDK and language. For example, the TypeScript v2 migration page discusses behavior for revision 2026-07-28, including subscriptions and x-mcp-header; the C# SDK has its own versioning guidance. Consult the documentation that matches your implementation rather than treating one language’s steps as universal. The MCP roadmap also identifies clear APIs and accurate documentation as important to developers building on MCP libraries.
What to record for future maintainers
Make the compatibility decision easy to distinguish from a future SDK or protocol migration. Record the upstream API behavior the tool supports, its MCP-facing contract, the SDK version and protocol revision in use, and any caller-visible limitations or breaking changes. Keep the tool description and migration notes aligned with the behavior the handler actually implements.
