Moving a graphics card directly in front of a case’s side-intake fans lowered its GPU core temperature by 16.7°C in a single enthusiast test reported by TechSpot on October 13, 2026. The same setup reduced GPU hotspot temperature by 19.3°C and VRAM temperature by 14°C, but raised CPU temperature by 1.1°C. The result shows why directing fresh air to the graphics card can matter; it does not establish that vertical mounting, or any one GPU position, will produce the same improvement in other PCs.

What the test found

TechSpot’s TrashBench experiment compared graphics-card positions in one dual-chamber PC. The system used an Asus ROG Strix RTX 3080, three side-intake fans, a rear exhaust, and a top-mounted 360 mm CPU all-in-one liquid cooler. PCIe riser cables made it possible to move the GPU while leaving the case fans in place.

In the configuration that put the GPU directly beside the side intake, TechSpot reported these changes relative to its comparison setup:

  • GPU core: 16.7°C lower.
  • GPU hotspot: 19.3°C lower.
  • GPU VRAM: 14°C lower.
  • Motherboard VRM: about 8°C lower.
  • CPU: 1.1°C warmer.

The headline figure of about 17°C refers to the GPU core reading. Core, hotspot, and VRAM are separate measurements, so the larger hotspot reduction should not be described as the core-temperature result.

How the experiment was run—and what it cannot prove

The workload looped 3DMark Time Spy alongside 7-Zip using 12 CPU threads. Fans were kept at fixed RPM. Each configuration ran for ten minutes, and the reported temperatures were averaged over the final five minutes.

TechSpot characterized the test as non-rigorous and cautioned that results could vary with other cases, fans, and fan positions. It tested one GPU in one PC build, not a range of hardware under a controlled multi-case comparison. The figures are therefore a reported example, not a temperature reduction to expect from a particular mount or airflow change.

GPU position matters more than the word “vertical”

A GPU placed beside fresh-air intake performed differently from the other positions in the reported test. TechSpot said moving the card to the case floor barely changed GPU temperature, while a conventional vertical mount slightly worsened it. “Vertical GPU mount” alone is not a useful prediction: the important detail is where the card sits relative to incoming air and the rest of the cooling setup.

Tom’s Hardware’s October 11, 2026 account reported a reduction of up to 19°C in GPU hotspot temperature for the GPU-focused setup. It also described a better-balanced configuration that made the GPU hotspot 14°C cooler and the CPU 3.3°C cooler. Those figures describe distinct outcomes and should not be combined with TechSpot’s core-temperature figure as if they came from one measurement or configuration.

Why cooling one component can warm another

Airflow is shared across a PC. In this build, the position that gave the GPU the most direct access to side-intake air also left the CPU 1.1°C warmer. Changing the radiator fan direction shifted the trade-off: reversing the CPU radiator fans to intake lowered CPU temperature by about 6°C but warmed the GPU. A combined airflow and GPU-position arrangement delivered a smaller GPU benefit while improving the overall balance.

That is why the lowest GPU reading is not automatically the best system configuration. Compare GPU core, hotspot, and VRAM temperatures alongside CPU temperature, and decide which component’s temperature matters for your workload. The reporting does not establish a universally best balance or provide a multi-case comparison.

What to check before trying a different GPU position

If you want to test the same principle, first work out whether your case can safely place the card where it receives fresh air. In the experiment, a PCIe riser cable enabled repositioning; the cable itself does not cool the GPU. The reporting does not validate a generally compatible riser, case, or mounting arrangement.

  • Check whether the case has a side intake, a suitable fan position, and enough space for the card and its power cables.
  • Confirm the riser cable is suitable for your GPU and motherboard connection, and that it can reach without being strained or sharply bent.
  • Make sure the card can be secured safely and that its fans have room to draw air rather than facing an obstruction.
  • Keep other airflow in view, especially CPU radiator intake or exhaust direction; a change that benefits the GPU may affect CPU temperature.
  • Compare temperatures under the same workload and fan settings before and after a change. A result from a different workload or fan curve is not a direct comparison.

Cases with side intake or GPU-directed fan brackets are categories to evaluate if direct airflow is the goal, not products proven by this experiment. Check the specific case’s layout and clearances rather than assuming that any side fan or vertical mount recreates the tested arrangement.

How to interpret a high GPU hotspot reading

A hotspot reading is not interchangeable with the GPU core temperature. In this test, the hotspot reduction exceeded the core reduction, which is why a claim about “17°C cooler” needs to identify the metric. If your hotspot is high, first compare it with the core temperature under a consistent workload, then inspect whether the card has an unobstructed supply of fresh air. This single experiment does not show that relocating a GPU will resolve every high-hotspot condition.
