The most targeted fix is to remove the map’s lighting.dat file, then repair Unturned’s Steam installation. A hosting-provider knowledge-base article says those two actions resolve the problem in its experience, but its quoted “95%” success rate is a provider claim, not an independently verified statistic, and the file path is specific to that provider’s server layout.
Start with the map-file repair if the failure is accompanied by could not divide by zero. Then verify the Steam files. If the connection error remains, preserve the evidence and escalate it to the server host or support team rather than repeatedly deleting files.
What the message means
“Unable to connect to a running service” means Unturned could not establish the connection it expected to a service that should already be running. The message alone does not identify whether the problem is a damaged game file, a map-specific failure, a server-process problem, or another configuration issue. The available matching guidance is narrowly focused on a map lighting file and Steam file repair, so treat those as the first, evidence-based checks rather than a universal diagnosis.
There are two environments to keep separate:
- Game client: the Unturned installation on the computer where you launch the game.
- Server installation: the files used by a dedicated or hosted server, which may be stored in a control panel or provider-specific file manager.
Deleting a file from the wrong environment will not repair the other one. Confirm whether you are troubleshooting your own client, a server you administer, or a hosted server before changing anything.

Do the two documented repairs first
The matching provider guidance uses two steps. It reports that these resolve the issue in its experience, but the article does not establish that they fix every cause or every Unturned version.
- Remove
lighting.datfrom the folder for the affected map. - Repair the Steam installation so damaged or outdated files can be detected and downloaded again.
Test Unturned after each step. Testing separately tells you which change mattered and avoids making several simultaneous changes that are difficult to undo.
Step 1: Remove the map’s lighting.dat file
When this step is most relevant
The source specifically connects this file deletion with the game throwing a could not divide by zero error. If that wording appears in the console, log, or on-screen failure, this is the most directly matched remedy. Do not describe it as a guaranteed fix for every connection failure; the evidence only links it to the map-lighting failure described above.
Stop the process and make a backup
- Stop the Unturned server or close the game completely. A file that is in use may not delete cleanly, and a running process can recreate or overwrite files while you work.
- Before deleting anything, copy
lighting.datto a safe folder outside the map directory. Name the copy with the map and date so you can restore it if needed. - If you are using a hosted server, use the provider’s file manager or an approved file-transfer method. Do not assume that a path shown for one host exists on another host.

/servers/pingperfect/level/[name of the map you're running]
The bracketed portion is a variable: select the directory whose name matches the map currently configured for the server. For example, do not delete a file from an unrelated map folder simply because it is the first directory listed.

- Enter the folder for the active map.
- Confirm that the file is named exactly
lighting.dat. Avoid deleting the entire map folder or similarly named files. - Delete the file, or move it outside the server directory if the file manager offers a safer quarantine option.
- Start the server or launch Unturned again and attempt the same connection.
The expected result is that the map can load without the divide-by-zero failure. If the original message appears unchanged, continue to Steam repair rather than repeatedly removing the same file.
If you need to undo the change
Stop the server or game, then restore the backup to the same map directory. If the host automatically regenerates map data, allow the process to finish before testing. Keep the original backup until you know the server starts and the map behaves normally.

Step 2: Repair the Steam installation
What the repair is intended to do
The provider describes this as running a Steam update that scans the game files for damaged or outdated files and redownloads replacements when they are found. In the current Steam desktop client, the corresponding game-file check is normally exposed as Verify integrity of game files. Menu wording can vary slightly by client version, but the purpose is the same: compare the local installation with Steam’s records and replace files that fail the check.
Verify Unturned’s files in Steam
- Open the Steam desktop client and sign in to the account that owns Unturned.
- Open Library.
- Right-click Unturned, then choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files. In older Steam layouts this section may be labelled Local Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the scan and any downloads to finish. Do not launch the game while Steam is still repairing it.
- Restart Steam after the operation completes, then launch Unturned and repeat the connection attempt.
A successful verification does not prove that the server itself is healthy. It only establishes that Steam found no remaining discrepancy in the local files it checked, or that it replaced the discrepancies it found.

What to record from the result
- Whether Steam reported that all files were successfully validated.
- Whether it downloaded replacements, and approximately how large the download was.
- Whether the error occurs on every map or only one map.
- Whether the message changed to a different error after the repair.
These details help support staff distinguish a local installation problem from a server-side or map-specific failure.
If the error remains
Once the map-file check and Steam repair are complete, avoid random deletion of additional files. Use the branches below to narrow the problem without destroying useful evidence.

The divide-by-zero message still appears
Confirm that you edited the map directory actually used by the server. A provider can have multiple map folders, test instances, or staged configurations. Check the active map name in the server configuration or control panel, then compare it with the directory you edited. If the correct file was removed and the same error returns, preserve the new log and open a support ticket; the available guidance does not document another map-file remedy.

Only one map fails
A single-map failure points attention toward that map’s data or configuration rather than a blanket Steam installation problem, but it is not proof of the cause. Test a known-good map, if your setup provides one, and record the exact map name, version, and time of each attempt. Do not overwrite the failing map until support has had a chance to inspect it if you may need recovery data.
Every map fails after file verification
When all maps fail even after Steam reports a clean installation, the remaining fault may be outside the two documented repairs. Check whether the server process is actually running, whether it stopped immediately after launch, and whether the client and server are being started from the installations you intended. Capture the startup and connection logs instead of relying on the short on-screen message.
The problem affects only one computer
If another authorized player can connect to the same server while one computer cannot, compare the failing computer’s Unturned installation and Steam account state with the working setup. Run the verification step on the affected computer first. Do not infer from this pattern that the server is permanently healthy; it only changes which side should be examined first.

The problem affects everyone
If all players receive the message, report the time of the incident, the server instance, the map, and whether the process is visible as running. A host or administrator can then check server-side logs and the service lifecycle. The wording “running service” does not by itself demonstrate that the process remained healthy after startup.
Preparing a useful support ticket
The source advises opening a support ticket when the two steps do not resolve the issue. A concise, reproducible report is more useful than a statement that the game “just will not connect.” Include:
- The exact error text, including whether could not divide by zero appears.
- The map name and the server instance or address, without posting credentials.
- Whether you removed
lighting.dat, from which map directory, and when. - The Steam verification result, including whether files were redownloaded.
- Whether the failure affects one player, several players, or every player.
- The approximate time of the latest attempt and any relevant server or client log excerpt.

Keep your backup of lighting.dat and unedited logs until the ticket is closed. Do not include passwords, API keys, or private connection tokens in the ticket.
Self-hosting and managed hosting: what changes
Managed hosting can provide a file manager and a support channel, while self-hosting gives you direct control of the machine. Neither option, by itself, proves that this particular error has been fixed. The available source confirms the existence of managed Unturned hosting and support, but it does not publish comparative performance, uptime, pricing, or affiliate terms.

- Keep a dated backup of map data and configuration before changing files.

- After an update, allow Steam or the server updater to finish before launching Unturned.
