Unturned does not publish an official RAM minimum, CPU core requirement, clock-speed target, or player-count-to-hardware formula for dedicated servers. The supported path is to run the Unturned Dedicated Server on Windows or Linux, then size the machine for your actual player count, map, Workshop content, plugins, operating system, and other workloads. Because no authoritative benchmark establishes a universal number, treat any figures from hosting companies or community posts as setup-specific estimates rather than official requirements.
What the official requirements actually establish
The most reliable answer comes from Unturned’s own server documentation, not generic game-server charts. The documented dedicated-server setup establishes the operating systems and networking steps you need, but it does not publish a hardware specification sheet. The hosting guide is dated November 1, 2022; the SteamCMD and server-setup pages reviewed do not show a publication date. Installation identifiers and access procedures can change, so check the linked documentation again when you deploy.

The official advanced guide states: “Servers can be hosted on Windows and Linux operating systems. There is no support for hosting on macOS devices.” Read the complete instructions in Using SteamCMD (Advanced Setup). Why a single RAM or CPU number would be misleading
Player count is only one workload variable
The server has a maximum-player setting, but the documentation does not say how a given player count translates into memory, CPU time, or network traffic. A small private server and a full public server can therefore have very different requirements even when they use the same executable.

Maps and Workshop content alter the workload
Map choice, Workshop items, plugins, and configuration all change what the process loads and what it must simulate. Unturned’s documentation confirms that Workshop add-ons are downloaded and updated at startup, but it does not publish resource estimates for individual maps, mods, or plugins. Do not turn a community estimate for one content set into a universal requirement.
The host runs more than the game process
Windows or Linux, SteamCMD, monitoring tools, backups, logs, and any other services share the machine. A server that appears stable in isolation can become unreliable when another process consumes memory or CPU. Leave uncommitted capacity for the operating system and the services you deliberately run beside the server, but choose the amount from observation rather than an unsupported percentage.
Choose between self-hosting and renting
Self-hosting on Windows or Linux
Self-hosting gives you control over the operating system, files, updates, Workshop configuration, and network policy. It is practical when you already have an always-on computer and can administer the router or firewall. The trade-offs are maintenance, electricity, hardware failures, backups, and latency for players who are far from your home connection.

Renting a game-server instance
A rented Unturned-compatible server avoids maintaining a host computer and usually places the machine in a data center. It does not remove the need to verify technical details: providers differ in actual resource allocation, locations, update procedures, Workshop and plugin support, backup/restore tools, and renewal terms. Official Unturned documentation does not compare providers or establish current prices, so evaluate a provider’s current contract rather than assuming that a plan label guarantees a particular CPU or RAM allocation.

Install the dedicated server with SteamCMD
Do not infer server requirements from a player’s normal Unturned installation. Multiplayer hosting uses the separate Unturned Dedicated Server tool installed and updated through Valve’s SteamCMD.

- Prepare a supported host. Use Windows or Linux. macOS is not a supported hosting platform according to the advanced documentation.
- Install SteamCMD. Use the package or archive appropriate to your operating system, then open a terminal or command prompt in the SteamCMD directory.
- Log in anonymously and install the server. The documented application ID is

app_update 1110390operation updates an existing server; it is an installation identifier, not a RAM or CPU statistic. - Keep each instance in its own server directory. The server stores savedata and configuration under a directory named for its ServerID. Record the location so you can back up the correct files and distinguish instances.
- For multiple instances, use SteamCMD. The advanced guide says running multiple servers from the same computer is not possible without SteamCMD. Plan separate directories and instance settings rather than launching the same files indiscriminately.

Choose LAN or internet mode
The official helper examples use ServerHelper.bat on Windows and ServerHelper.sh on Linux. The examples distinguish InternetServer from LanServer; use the helper and mode appropriate to how players should connect. Do not invent a public listing by selecting LAN mode: a LAN server is not visible from the public Multiplayer menu by default.
Set the basic server options
Initial configuration includes the map, password, and maximum players. Set a password for a private group and choose a maximum that matches the group you will actually test. The setting controls admission; it is not a hardware recommendation.

Add Workshop content deliberately
Workshop items are listed in WorkshopDownloadConfig.json. The server retrieves configured items during startup and updates them as needed. Add content in small, known-good batches so that a startup failure or unexpected performance change can be associated with a specific item. Keep enough disk space for the base server, saves, logs, and the versions of Workshop files you retain; the official pages do not provide a numeric disk allowance.
Shut down cleanly
Use the documented shutdown command rather than terminating the process abruptly. The setup documentation emphasizes manual save and shutdown because it does not describe an autosave feature. A clean stop gives the server an opportunity to write its state and close files before maintenance or a reboot.

Make a server reachable by players
LAN and friends-only access
For a local network or a small friends setup, players can join through Steam friends or a Server Code as described in the simple setup. Because LAN servers are not listed publicly by default, tell players the intended join method instead of waiting for the server to appear in the public browser.
Public internet access
An internet-accessible server needs a Game Server Login Token and either Fake IP or port forwarding. The official documentation says you do not need both and describes Fake IP as easier and adequate for most servers. The exact sentence is: “For an internet server, you must configure either Fake IP or Port Forwarding. Configuring both is not necessary.”
If you host from a home network, the hosting guide says port forwarding is required for internet access. You must also account for the host’s local firewall and any upstream router or ISP restrictions. If you choose Fake IP, follow the current token and configuration steps in the official guide rather than combining it with an unnecessary forwarding rule.
How to size a server without an official benchmark
When you need a number for a particular setup, create a repeatable estimate instead of copying an unlabeled hosting chart. The following process keeps the result tied to your version and content:
- Define the workload. Record the operating system, Unturned server build, map, Workshop items, plugins, maximum players, and whether the machine runs other services.
- Start with available hardware. Install the dedicated server and keep the host’s normal background services visible in your monitoring tools. Do not treat the SteamCMD application ID as a capacity signal.
- Exercise the busy case. Have the intended number of players use the actual map and content. Include activities that create the highest simulation, entity, or loading demand for your group rather than measuring only an idle server.
- Observe over time. Watch CPU utilization, process memory, total system memory, disk activity, and network behavior during startup and sustained play. Check for growth after Workshop updates or long sessions, not just the first five minutes.
- Check failure symptoms. Look for crashes, connection drops, long joins, delayed simulation, swapping or paging, and an operating system that becomes unresponsive. Investigate logs and remove or update the content associated with a reproducible fault.
- Retest after every material change. A new map, plugin, Workshop version, player maximum, operating-system update, or second server instance invalidates an old estimate.
This produces a workload-specific capacity decision. It does not create an official minimum, and it should be documented with the exact player count and content set so another administrator can reproduce it.
Common problems and practical fixes

What to verify before going live
- Windows or Linux is installed and patched; macOS is not used as the host.
- SteamCMD installs and updates application
1110390successfully. - The ServerID directory, savedata, configuration, and logs are included in your backup plan.
- The selected map, maximum players, password, and Workshop list are intentional.
- You have tested clean save and shutdown, then restored or inspected the resulting files.
- LAN, friends-only, or internet access has been tested from the same network and, for a public server, from an external connection.
- Your capacity estimate names the exact player count, map, Workshop set, plugins, operating system, and other services measured.
- You know who will apply updates, review logs, restore backups, and respond when the host or network fails.
Keeping the requirement answer honest
Community discussions often ask, “How much RAM does an Unturned server use?” That is a reasonable planning question, but it is not answered by an official universal number in the documentation cited here. The safest published answer is therefore conditional: install the supported dedicated server, define the real workload, measure it under the busiest expected conditions, and keep operational headroom for the operating system and any additional services. Recheck the result whenever the game build, map, Workshop content, plugins, player limit, or hosting arrangement changes.
