Unturned starts on port 27015. A running server uses two consecutive ports: 27015 for game/server traffic and 27016 for server-list queries. You enter only the first number in the configuration. To move the server, add a line such as Port 27017 to the instance’s Commands.dat; the server then uses 27017 and 27018.
Whichever starting port you choose, forward that port and the immediately following port from your router and operating-system firewall to the server computer’s private LAN address. If you run more than one server on the same machine, use non-overlapping starts such as 27015, 27017 and 27019.

The Unturned 3 Knowledgebase, reviewed in 2026, states that the default pair is 27015 and 27016 and that each server consumes two consecutive ports. The Official Unturned Wiki describes the same behavior: the Port command specifies the first port, while the next port is used automatically.
How Unturned’s two-port model works
The number in Port N is the starting port
Unturned does not expect you to enter a range in Commands.dat. The command contains one integer, N. The server binds N and N+1. For example, Port 27017 means the pair 27017 and 27018. Writing Port 27017-27018 is not the documented syntax and can prevent the setting from being interpreted correctly.

Why a second port is required
One port handles the server’s in-game traffic and the other supports server-list queries. The exact internal assignment is less important than the operational rule: both consecutive ports must be reachable. Forwarding only the number shown to players can leave the server apparently online while list queries or connection handshakes fail.
What players should receive
Give players the host’s public address and the configured starting port when a direct connection requires a port. For a default installation that is the public address with port 27015; for the example above it is the public address with port 27017. Do not advertise the automatically assigned second port as the primary connection port.
Change an Unturned server port
Make the configuration change while the dedicated server is stopped. The following procedure applies to a self-hosted instance; a managed host may expose the same setting through its control panel instead.

- Stop the dedicated server cleanly. Close the server process or use the host’s stop control. Editing a live file can be overwritten during shutdown.
- Open the server instance directory. Locate the instance’s
Commands.datfile, not a similarly named client or workshop file. If you maintain several instances, verify that you are in the directory belonging to the server you intend to change. - Add one port command. Put the command on its own line. For example:
Port 27017
Keep only one activePortline for that instance so there is no ambiguity about which value should apply. - Save the file and restart the server. The new starting port takes effect when the server starts. Its required pair is now 27017 and 27018 in this example.
- Update the router or gateway rule. Forward both 27017 and 27018 to the server computer’s private LAN address. Replace the old 27015–27016 rules if the machine no longer hosts a server on those ports.
- Allow the pair through the host firewall. Create or edit inbound rules for the same configured ports in the operating system firewall. A router rule cannot compensate for a local firewall that drops the traffic.
- Test from outside the home network. Use a friend on another connection or a suitable external port check. Testing from the same LAN can be misleading because some routers do not support NAT loopback.
- Give players the updated endpoint. Share the public address and the new starting port, 27017 in this example. Players should not continue using the old port after the change.
Forwarding the ports correctly
Use the server computer’s private IP address
A forwarding rule targets a device inside your network, such as 192.168.1.50 or 10.0.0.25. That address can change when the router’s DHCP lease is renewed, so reserve it for the server computer in the router’s DHCP settings or assign a carefully managed static address. If the destination changes, the rule still exists but points to the wrong device.
Create a rule for each consecutive port
Routers label the fields differently, but the important values are the external port, internal port, destination address and protocol. Create a rule for the configured starting port and another for the next port, both targeting the same private IP. For Port 27017, the external/internal values are 27017 and 27018. If your router offers a contiguous range field, enter 27017–27018 only when it creates two ports for the same destination; do not extend the range unnecessarily.
Match the firewall and router configuration
The operating-system firewall must permit the same pair that the router forwards. Apply the rule to the network profile used by the server and limit the destination to the dedicated-server application where your firewall supports application scoping. After changing ports, remove obsolete inbound rules so an old service is not left exposed accidentally.

Check whether your ISP permits inbound connections
Port forwarding works only when your home connection has a publicly reachable address. Carrier-grade NAT, a mobile broadband connection, or an ISP policy that blocks inbound traffic can prevent unsolicited connections even when the router appears correctly configured. Ask the ISP whether you have a public IPv4 address and whether inbound forwarding is allowed. If you cannot obtain one, a managed game-server service or another externally reachable host avoids the home-router requirement.
Running multiple Unturned servers on one machine
Every simultaneous server needs its own two-port pair. The starts must be separated by two so that one server never claims the next port needed by another. The Unturned 3 Knowledgebase recommends the following sequence:

On one physical computer, all instances may share the same private IP, but each process still needs a distinct pair. On separate computers, forward each pair to the appropriate device. Keep a written inventory of instance name, starting port, second port, private IP and public listing details; this prevents a later server from reusing an occupied port.

Example allocation
Suppose a home host runs a survival server, a test server and an event server. Put Port 27015 in the first instance, Port 27017 in the second and Port 27019 in the third. Forward 27015–27016, 27017–27018 and 27019–27020 respectively. Players connecting to the test server use the host’s public address with 27017, while the survival server remains on 27015.
Troubleshooting port and connection failures

Home hosting versus managed hosting
The port numbers are the same conceptually, but the operational work differs by hosting model.

Choose home hosting when you control the router, have a public address and are comfortable maintaining the machine. Managed hosting is practical when forwarding is impossible, several servers must stay online, or you do not want game traffic tied to a household connection. Verify the provider’s current pricing, port assignment and backup policy independently before committing.

Steam port-range context
Steam Support lists broader UDP/TCP ranges that include 27015–27050 for platform services. That information is useful when a corporate firewall or an upstream security policy asks for Steam-related ranges, but it does not replace Unturned’s application-specific rule: each Unturned server uses its configured starting port plus the next consecutive port. Open only the ports required by your deployment unless your network administrator has a documented reason to permit a wider Steam range.
Security and maintenance practices
- Expose only the required pair. Do not forward an entire high-port range when one server needs two ports.
- Keep the destination stable. A DHCP reservation prevents silent breakage after a reboot.
- Separate administrative access. Router-management and remote-desktop ports are unrelated to Unturned and should not be bundled into the game rule.
- Record every instance. Store the
Commands.datvalue, pair, private IP and public endpoint in your maintenance notes. - Recheck after changes. Any port edit requires matching updates to router rules, operating-system firewall rules and the address given to players.
- Remove retired rules. Delete forwarding entries for servers that no longer run, especially when a public IP is shared by several services.
Final verification checklist
- The intended instance contains exactly one active
Port Nline. - The server has been stopped and restarted after saving the file.
- The pair N and N+1 is recorded; the second port was not omitted.
- Both ports forward to the correct private LAN IP.
- The host operating system allows both ports.
- No other Unturned instance or unrelated service uses either port.
- The ISP provides a publicly reachable address, or an external host is being used.
- A player on another network can connect using the public address and starting port.
For a default installation, leave Commands.dat at its default behavior and forward 27015–27016. For a changed installation, treat the value in Port N as the source of truth and carry that number, plus N+1, through every network setting.
