Unstable Stone is a sidearm Combat Tarstone found in a chest behind a breakable wall on the lower platforms west of the Castigator’s Keep Beacon. It makes repeated hits on one enemy trigger a splash-damage explosion. Upgrade guides disagree about the number of ranks and the rank that reduces the trigger to four hits, so check the item description in your current game before spending resources.
Where to find Unstable Stone
- Start at the Castigator’s Keep Beacon and head west toward the lower level.
- Descend to the wooden platforms and walkways around the stone pillars.
- Move toward the pillars on the north side. Strike the rock wall beside the second pillar to reveal the chest.
- If that wall does not break, try the wall by the next pillar. The chest is behind an illusory or breakable wall among the scaffolding.
The location is described consistently by NerdsChalk’s August 20, 2026 guide and AllThingsHow’s location guide. NerdsChalk says the item is permanently added to inventory when collected.
What Unstable Stone does
Unstable Stone is a sidearm Combat Tarstone. Repeated hits on the same enemy trigger an explosion that deals splash damage. The effect rewards keeping fire on one target: switching targets before reaching the trigger works against it. The core mechanic is also listed by the Mortal Shell 2 Database and its Tarstones index.
Do not confuse it with Volatile Fragment. Guides describe Unstable Stone as an explosion caused by repeated hits on a living target, while Volatile Fragment makes enemies explode when ranged attacks kill them.

Which sidearms suit it?
AllThingsHow lists the Caged Hystrix, Forgotten Crossbow, and Triarch Repeater as compatible sidearms. Its commentary presents fast or multi-hit weapons as a natural fit, not a universal best-in-slot verdict.
- How reliably can you land several hits on one target? Rapid-fire or multi-hit play is more aligned with the trigger than slower single shots.
- How useful is splash damage in your encounters? The blast is more appealing when nearby enemies can benefit; it matters less if fights are usually isolated or you often switch targets.
These are practical deductions from the described trigger and guide commentary, not a tested weapon ranking.

Upgrade ranks and damage: why guides differ
Published upgrade tables do not agree. NerdsChalk gives four ranks; the Mortal Shell 2 Database gives three; and AllThingsHow gives three but omits the 40-damage rank. The figures below preserve each account rather than combining them into a single ladder.

NerdsChalk says the splash figure is flat damage and that upgrades affect the blast rather than regular projectile damage. The other tables do not establish the same full set of details. No official item table or patch note in the cited sources resolves the disagreement. Check the live Tarstone description in your game version before committing upgrade resources.

AllThingsHow reports that Tarstone upgrades are handled by Franz at the Tarforge in Marrow Keep after you give him the Etching Needle, and that the equipped Tarstone gains experience from enemy kills. Treat this as a guide-reported process rather than official documentation; consult the in-game prompts for your current version.
