Unpacking has no conventional cheat codes or cheat menu documented in its game listing; here, “cheats” means hints for placing belongings and finding optional interactions.
What kind of game is Unpacking?
Unpacking is a single-player puzzle and home-decoration game about moving belongings into successive homes and piecing together a character’s life from the objects. The official site describes it as “A zen puzzle game about the familiar experience of pulling possessions out of boxes and fitting them into a new home.” The campaign follows eight house moves; those moves are chapters, not a claim that each chapter contains only one room. Steam describes the experience as having no timers, meters, or scores, so there is no need to rush through a room.
The game’s structure makes “Where does this go?” a natural question—and Steam Community discussions include players asking exactly that, as well as someone who could not find a spot for a diploma. When an item will not fit, that can be part of the room’s puzzle rather than a sign that you need to place it faster.

Non-spoiler tips for placing items
Before trying every surface at random, look at what the room offers and what the object seems designed to do. This is an observation-based approach drawn from the game’s exploratory design, not a guaranteed solution for every item.

- Scan the room first. Notice open surfaces, shelves, drawers, closets, and wall space. Check small recesses and less obvious corners as well as the most visible furniture.
- Use the object’s likely purpose as a clue. A belonging’s shape and apparent use can suggest whether it belongs on a surface, inside storage, or on a wall.
- Read placement feedback. If the game marks an attempted position as invalid, try a different surface or orientation instead of forcing it.
- Take your time. With no score or timer pressure described by Steam, pausing to inspect the room is part of the intended puzzle-solving rhythm.
If the invalid-item outline is difficult to see, the official Unpacking site says its colour can be changed. Adjusting it can make placement feedback easier to distinguish.
How the chapters and moves are organized
The official game description frames the campaign as eight house moves. Steam Community materials and walkthroughs identify chapter or year labels spanning 1997 through 2018. Use the displayed year or chapter in your game when looking for a specific placement hint; the same kind of object may appear in different contexts as the homes change.

For a spoiler-light playthrough, first try the room scan and object-purpose clues above. If you are still stuck, search for help by the chapter or year shown in your game and the item’s name. The examples below reveal optional achievement actions rather than ordinary room-by-room solutions.

- In an early chapter, solve the cube and turn on a music player.
- Rotate a mannequin until it dabs.
- Put a cookie jar somewhere out of reach.
- Place an electronic item in a dangerous location, such as a bath.
- Group coffee-making equipment, arrange underwear in one drawer, solve an equation with fridge magnets, place two plush toys together, or build a tower from blocks.
These actions are optional goals, not a replacement for completing the moves. Chapter completion and achievement hunting are distinct aims: focus on finishing the homes if you want to progress, and pursue extra interactions if you want to work toward the full achievement set.

For an exact answer, use the chapter or year displayed in your game alongside the item name. This is especially useful for belongings such as a diploma: community posts show that players can have trouble finding a valid spot, but a useful placement answer needs to match the particular move and room. This guide does not supply a complete room-by-room placement map, so it avoids guessing at an item’s location without that context.

If you are trying to preserve surprises, ask for a hint rather than a direct placement. If you want the solution, make sure any walkthrough you consult identifies the same chapter or year before following its item-by-item directions.
