To use a carrier-locked Samsung Galaxy A50 with another provider, request the unlock from the carrier that originally sold or locked the phone. Check that carrier’s eligibility rules, complete its official unlock process, then confirm the phone’s exact model and IMEI are supported by the new provider. A carrier unlock removes a network restriction; it does not guarantee service on every network.

First, identify which kind of “unlock” you need

On a Galaxy A50, “unlock” can mean several unrelated things. The steps below cover a carrier or SIM/network restriction—the issue that prevents the phone from accepting another provider’s SIM.

  • Carrier/SIM unlock: Removes the original provider’s restriction on using another provider’s SIM, if the carrier approves the request. Samsung’s Galaxy A50 A505U User Manual calls this “UICC unlock” and says to contact the service provider for assistance.
  • Screen lock: A PIN, pattern, password, or biometric used to access the phone. Removing a carrier restriction will not recover a forgotten screen credential. Samsung’s A50 product sheet describes the in-display fingerprint scanner as a way to unlock the handset itself: Galaxy A50 product sheet.
  • SIM PIN or PUK: A code protecting the SIM card, not a carrier restriction. If the phone asks for a SIM PIN or PUK, contact the SIM provider; repeated wrong entries can lock the SIM. The A50 manual lists SIM-card lock separately from UICC unlock: Samsung Galaxy A50 A505U User Manual.
  • Bootloader unlocking or rooting: A software-modification process, not a way to authorize another carrier’s SIM. Procedures may vary by A50 model and region; the carrier-unlock instructions here do not apply.

How to request a carrier unlock

  1. Confirm the symptom. If the phone requests a network unlock after you insert another carrier’s SIM, or reports an invalid or incompatible SIM, it may be network-locked. Optus describes the invalid-SIM symptom for a locked Galaxy A50 and directs users to its device-unlock process: Optus device unlocking help. A SIM PIN or PUK prompt points to a different issue.
  2. Find the original carrier. Check the receipt, account records, seller information, and device or IMEI records. Branding can offer a clue, but it does not prove the current lock status or eligibility. If you bought the phone used, ask the seller which carrier sold it and for proof that it was unlocked, then verify its status with that carrier.
  3. Ask that carrier to check eligibility. Requirements depend on the carrier, account, plan, and device status. Ask whether the phone is locked to that carrier, whether it qualifies, and what information or steps are required. For example, T-Mobile’s published U.S. policy requires an eligible device to have been sold by T-Mobile, not be reported lost, stolen, or blocked, and have an associated account in good standing. Its postpaid criteria include at least 40 days active on the requesting line; a financed or leased device must be paid in full. These are T-Mobile-specific conditions, not a general rule: T-Mobile SIM unlock policy.
  4. Use the official request or device workflow. Follow the carrier’s current instructions rather than entering a code from an unverified source. AT&T says eligible Samsung, Apple, or Google devices on an AT&T Wireless plan may unlock automatically; it also provides a route to check status and request an unlock for qualifying devices: AT&T device unlock support. T-Mobile provides its own device-unlock workflow and status checks through the policy page linked above.
  5. Complete the carrier’s instructions. Depending on the carrier, model variant, and lock state, completion may happen remotely or involve an app, notification, restart, or a non-original SIM. Follow the instructions for your handset; there is no universal code or completion time established for every Galaxy A50.
  6. Verify the new provider will support the phone. Give the destination carrier the exact model number and IMEI and ask it to confirm compatibility before buying a plan or SIM. An unlocked phone may still have limited functionality—or no service—on a network with incompatible technologies. Verizon explains this limitation in its device-unlock information: Verizon device unlocking policy.

What carrier policies mean for your A50

The original carrier controls its unlock decision. Policies change and differ by country, so treat U.S. carrier examples as orientation, not as rules for every A50 or every provider.

Carrier example What its published information says What to do
T-Mobile (United States) Eligible-device unlocks are free of charge. The policy lists device origin, lost/stolen/blocked status, account standing, active-service duration, and payment status as factors. For postpaid devices, it specifies at least 40 days active on the requesting line. Policy Check the policy and your device/account status with T-Mobile; do not apply its requirements to other carriers.
AT&T (United States) Provides an eligibility check and request process. Its support page says eligible Samsung, Apple, or Google devices on an AT&T Wireless plan may unlock automatically. Support page Use AT&T’s current check and request route for an AT&T-locked phone.
Verizon (United States) Publishes a device-unlocking policy and warns that an unlocked handset may not work fully on a different carrier because network technologies differ. Policy Check the device’s status and ask the destination carrier to verify the exact model and IMEI.

Common fixes that do not unlock a carrier-locked phone

Factory reset

A factory reset is not the carrier-unlock route described by Samsung’s manual or the carrier processes above. It erases personal data and may trigger account-protection checks, so back up first if a reset is independently necessary. Do not reset the phone as a substitute for contacting the carrier.

Paid unlock codes or third-party services

Start with the original carrier’s official process, which may be free for eligible devices. The device authorization is controlled by the carrier; no unlock box, code generator, SIM eject tool, or paper manual is required for the central task. A replacement SIM may be needed later to activate service with the new provider, but it does not remove the lock.

Forgotten screen PIN or pattern

A carrier unlock does not bypass the screen lock. Use Samsung’s current official account-recovery or device-recovery guidance; reset options can erase local data and may require the account previously synced with the phone.

“Factory unlocked” claims

A phone sold unlocked from Samsung or a retailer is different from a carrier-branded phone that was later unlocked. Samsung’s 2019 U.S. A50 business sheet describes unlocked models as allowing a customer to choose a carrier, but that description does not establish the status of a particular used handset. Verify the actual device with its original carrier and the intended destination carrier.
