“Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)” means Windows could not successfully identify a USB device during connection. It does not, by itself, prove that the device is dead or that a driver is faulty. Start by testing the device, cable, port, and any hub separately; then move on to Windows settings and manufacturer support.
What the error means
Before Windows can use a USB device, it needs to obtain and validate information that identifies and configures it. This message means that process—known as enumeration—did not complete successfully. A Microsoft Q&A community explanation lists possible failures such as a timed-out port reset, unsuccessful address assignment, or a failed descriptor request. The wording does not identify which component caused the problem.
The cause could be the USB device, a cable, a hub or extension, a computer port, or the host computer’s USB connection path. Treat the message as a symptom to investigate, not a diagnosis.
How to troubleshoot the error
1. Simplify the physical connection
- Unplug the device, wait a moment, and reconnect it.
- Try a different USB port, preferably one connected directly to the computer.
- Temporarily remove any hub, dock, or extension cable and connect the device directly.
- If the device has a detachable cable, test with a known-good compatible USB data cable. A cable that provides power may not necessarily provide a working data connection.
These checks help isolate the connection path before you change Windows settings. Microsoft Community replies recommend trying another port or cable and bypassing hubs or extensions: Microsoft Community troubleshooting discussion and Microsoft Community discussion of the error.

2. Test the device on another computer
Connect the device to another computer, using a known-good compatible cable if it is detachable. If it works there, the first computer’s port, USB controller, internal connection, or an intermediary in the connection path becomes more suspect. If it fails on both computers, the device or its cable becomes more suspect. Neither result proves which component has failed.
3. Compare ports and remove intermediaries
Note whether the device works in another port or only when connected directly. If bypassing a hub or extension resolves the issue, that intermediary belongs in the suspected path. If only one port fails, suspicion narrows to that port or its internal path, but the test cannot distinguish physical port damage from a controller or internal cabling problem.

A front-panel desktop port may have an internal connection that differs from a rear port. A Microsoft Q&A reply suggests checking internal USB headers and connections. Open a desktop only if you are comfortable doing so; for a laptop, contact the manufacturer or a qualified repairer rather than opening the computer based on this error alone: Microsoft Q&A discussion.
4. Ask Windows to detect the device again
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Find the unknown device entry. It may appear under Universal Serial Bus controllers; its exact location can vary.
- Right-click the entry and choose Uninstall device, then confirm if prompted.
- Restart the computer and reconnect the device. If needed, in Device Manager select Action > Scan for hardware changes.
Removing the entry and scanning again prompts Windows to redetect the hardware; it is a troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed repair. 5. Check USB power management as a test
Some Microsoft Community replies suggest testing whether USB selective suspend or a USB Root Hub power-management setting is involved. The presence of this error does not establish that power management caused it, and the exact settings available can vary by Windows version and computer.
If you change a power setting, record its original value so you can restore it if the test makes no difference. Do not treat disabling a power feature as a universal fix: Microsoft Community troubleshooting discussion and Microsoft Community discussion of the error.

6. Follow the computer or motherboard maker’s guidance
Check the computer or motherboard manufacturer’s support information for model-specific chipset drivers and BIOS/UEFI update instructions. Avoid generic driver-updater tools and do not change unrelated BIOS/UEFI options. A BIOS update is not a first-line diagnosis for every descriptor failure; use the manufacturer’s exact instructions for your model.
In a May 21, 2022 Microsoft Community reply, Support Specialist Lynn Sun advised contacting the laptop manufacturer about a BIOS update and said persistent trouble might require depot repair or hardware replacement. When to seek repair or support
Contact the device maker if that device continues to fail across computers with known-good connections. Contact the computer maker or a qualified repairer if multiple known-good USB devices fail on one computer or the fault appears limited to a particular port or host. A persistent problem may require service or hardware replacement; the available support discussions do not establish one repair procedure that applies to every case.
Before escalating, record the device model, computer model, Windows version, ports tested, whether a hub or extension was removed, which cable was used, and whether the device worked on another computer. Those details help support staff distinguish a device-side issue from a host-side connection problem.
