Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) is a networking architecture that lets devices on an IP network find one another and interact with the services they offer. It defines how devices advertise capabilities, how software control points discover them, and how those control points send commands or receive updates.

What does UPnP mean?

UPnP stands for Universal Plug and Play. It is a set of networking protocols and roles, not a single product or a type of device. In the architecture, a device offers services; a control point is a participant—often software—that searches for, controls, or listens to those services.

The UPnP Device Architecture version 2.0 describes six stages: addressing, discovery, description, control, eventing, and presentation. The stages explain how devices and control points communicate; they do not guarantee that every product implements every feature or specification revision. How does UPnP work?

  1. Addressing: Devices and control points obtain network addresses so they can communicate over IP.
  2. Discovery: A device can advertise its services, and a control point can search for devices or services. Discovery messages identify what has been found and point to additional information.
  3. Description: The control point retrieves a device description, expressed in XML, to learn which services and capabilities are available. Finding a device does not by itself reveal everything it can do.
  4. Control: The control point invokes actions offered by a service. The UPnP version 1.1 architecture document specifies XML control messages using SOAP. UPnP Device Architecture, version 1.1 (UPnP Forum)
  5. Eventing: A control point may subscribe to a service to receive updates when evented state variables change. This complements control actions: one sends commands, while the other reports changes.
  6. Presentation: Some devices provide a presentation URL that a control point can retrieve. Depending on the device and page, it may show status or offer controls.

What is UPnP on a router?

On a router, “UPnP” commonly refers to a setting associated with UPnP networking, but the architecture documents alone do not establish what a particular router’s setting does, which functions it enables, or whether its configuration is safe. Those details depend on the router and its documentation. The standard describes communication among devices and control points; it is not a security assessment of a specific router.

Does UPnP mean a device is connected to the internet?

No. UPnP describes device interaction over an IP network. The fact that a device supports UPnP does not, on its own, show that it is exposed to the public internet or establish how a router is configured. To determine a device’s reachability or assess a security concern, consult the documentation and current security guidance for the specific device, router, and network.

What happens when a device is discovered?

Discovery means a control point has found a device or service and received identifying information plus a pointer to more details. The control point can then retrieve the device description, inspect the listed services, and—if it supports the relevant service—invoke its actions or subscribe to its events. Discovery is the start of that interaction, not proof that a command has been sent or that a feature is available in every control point.

Which UPnP version does a device use?

The cited UPnP Forum documents describe separate architecture revisions: version 2.0 is dated 2014-09-01, while version 1.1 is a distinct document. Their core model covers discovery through control, but implementation details may differ by revision. The documents do not establish which version is most widely deployed, and the version label alone does not confirm that a particular product supports every feature in that revision.
