A travel plug adapter makes your plug fit a destination socket; it does not convert voltage. A travel charger supplies power to devices, and some combined adapter-chargers also include USB ports. Choose based on what your devices need: check their input labels and your destination’s socket type, voltage and frequency before you pack.
What is the difference between a travel adapter and a travel charger?
A travel plug adapter changes the plug’s physical configuration so it can connect to a different socket. By itself, it does not change the electricity’s voltage. A travel charger converts mains power into the output required by a device. Some products combine a plug adapter and USB charging ports, but a universal plug adapter is not necessarily a charger.
The word “adapter” can also mean a device’s power supply. If your phone or laptop has a separate power brick, check the input label on that brick—not just the device or plug shape.
Which should you pack?
- Charging USB devices: If your existing chargers accept the destination’s voltage, pack a compatible plug adapter or a combined travel adapter/charger with suitable USB outputs. Check the specific product’s output per port and total output.
- Using a detachable power supply: Read its INPUT label. If the stated voltage range includes the destination supply, use the correctly rated plug adapter if the plug does not fit.
- Using single-voltage equipment: If its rating does not include the destination voltage, a suitable voltage converter or transformer may be needed. Check the appliance’s wattage and manufacturer’s guidance first; some electronics are not suitable for converters.
- Traveling by cruise ship or unsure about sockets: Check with the cruise operator or travel agent. Cabin sockets and power supplies can vary, even within one operator.
Electrical Safety First gives “INPUT: 110-240V” as an example of a dual-voltage rating. A device marked for a range can generally operate within that range without a voltage converter or transformer, as Electrical Safety First explains in its traveller guidance. Check frequency and the manufacturer’s instructions as well.

How to check compatibility and safety
- Check the destination: Find the socket type, voltage and frequency for every stop on your itinerary.
- Read each device’s input rating: Check the appliance or its power supply. Confirm that the destination voltage and frequency fall within the stated limits.
- Match the adapter to the load: Check its maximum power rating against the appliance’s requirements. Make sure it preserves an earth connection if the appliance requires one.
- Check USB output ratings: For a combined adapter/charger, confirm the output per port and the total output meet your devices’ requirements. Do not assume a particular USB-C capability from the product name alone.
- Inspect fit and labeling: Use an adapter designed for the destination sockets that fits securely; do not force it. Electrical Safety First recommends buying from a reputable retailer and says travel adaptors sold in the UK must meet BS 8546. That standards guidance is specific to the UK, not a worldwide certification rule.
The International Electrotechnical Commission’s IEC 60884-2-5:2017 sets particular requirements for adaptors, including travel adaptors, within a stated scope of above 50 V through 250 V and not exceeding 20 A. It excludes travel adaptors that allow two or more plugs to be connected simultaneously. The existence of this standard does not establish that a particular product is certified to it.
What recent UK safety reports say—and do not say
UK authorities have reported hazards in specific travel adapters. On 18 February 2026, the Office for Product Safety and Standards reported that the Decqle Universal Travel Adapter, model DQZ9, presented a serious fire risk because its plug did not meet BS 1363 dimensional requirements and its fuse was too small. The import was rejected at the border.

These reports concern the named products. They do not establish that every universal adapter is unsafe.

How to choose between a universal adapter and separate gear
For a trip with several plug types, a universal travel adapter may be convenient if it supports the sockets on your itinerary and its ratings suit the connected devices. For a known destination, a destination-specific plug adapter may be a simpler fit. If you need USB charging, consider a combined adapter/charger only after checking its actual port outputs and total output. Keep a voltage converter or transformer as a conditional option for equipment that cannot accept the destination voltage—not as a default phone or laptop accessory.

Whichever setup you choose, compare the destination match, voltage and power limits, grounding, secure fit, and the number of devices and ports you need. A plug adapter solves a connection mismatch; it does not make an electrically incompatible appliance safe.
