Choose Unity for a first project that is 2D, mobile-first, or deliberately small. Choose Unreal Engine when the game is primarily 3D, visual presentation is central, or Blueprint visual scripting suits how you want to learn. Neither engine is universally easier; the right first choice follows your game’s scope, target platforms, preferred scripting style, and computer.
The decision in one view
| Question | Unity | Unreal Engine |
|---|---|---|
| Best first-project fit | Small 2D games, mobile releases, and modest cross-platform projects | 3D games where lighting, materials, or a cinematic presentation matter |
| First scripting doorway | GameObjects assembled from components, with code added as needed | Blueprint visual scripting, with C++ available when required |
| Free-use condition | Unity Personal is free for hobbyists and small indie teams; Unity says Pro is required for businesses with more than $200,000 in funding or annual revenue | Free for game developers below $1 million in gross product revenue; qualifying lifetime gross revenue above $1 million is subject to a 5% royalty |
| Publishing scope | Web, desktop, AR/VR, and mobile publishing are included with Unity Personal | Epic describes the game license as including source-code access, all platforms, and all features |
| Onboarding emphasis | Unity Hub, templates, Unity Learn, and the Unity Essentials pathway | Blueprints, “Your First Hour in Unreal Engine,” quick-start guides, and scripting documentation |
| Hardware note | Unity publishes requirements for Windows, macOS, and Linux; Unity 6.5 Linux support requires an X64 CPU with SSE2 and OpenGL 3.2 or Vulkan-capable graphics | Some features require DirectX 11; Epic recommends DirectX 12 for most games and provides target-platform quality and ray-tracing settings |
The table is a fit guide, not a performance ranking. The available evidence does not include a controlled frame-rate test, a market-share study, or a beginner usability survey.
What Unity and Unreal actually give you
Unity’s GameObject-and-component model
Unity describes itself as a real-time engine for creating 2D and 3D applications and using gaming services throughout an application’s lifetime. In practice, a scene is built from GameObjects. Components give those objects behavior, visuals, physics, cameras, audio, and other capabilities. You can begin by assembling components in the editor and then add scripts for input, rules, menus, saving, and other game-specific behavior.
This model is useful for a small first game because you can keep the project visible and modular: a player object, a camera, a level, an input component, and a short script can represent an entire playable loop. Unity’s beginner material is organized around that workflow rather than asking a new developer to understand every subsystem before making a scene.

Unreal’s Blueprint-first option
Epic says UE5 includes the Blueprint visual scripting system. Blueprints represent logic as connected nodes, so you can prototype movement, triggers, doors, pickups, and user-interface interactions without writing C++ immediately. C++ remains available for systems that benefit from native code or for teams that prefer a code-heavy architecture.
Epic’s beginner material is strongly 3D-oriented: its “Your First Hour in Unreal Engine” course creates a simple 3D platformer. That makes Unreal attractive when the game’s identity depends on a 3D scene, lighting, materials, or a cinematic presentation. It does not mean Unreal cannot make a 2D game; it means the documented beginner path gives a first-time developer a 3D starting point.
Match the engine to your first game
Choose Unity for a 2D project
A platformer viewed from the side, a top-down puzzle game, a card game, or a small pixel-art adventure usually benefits from a toolchain whose first-party learning path explicitly covers both 2D and 3D work. Unity’s documented 2D/3D scope and Unity Essentials pathway make it the more direct starting point for this kind of project.

The engine choice will matter less than avoiding a design that requires inventory systems, online multiplayer, procedural generation, and several dozen levels before the first playable build.
Choose Unity for mobile-first or modest cross-platform work
Unity Personal lists publishing support for web, desktop, AR/VR, and mobile. If a phone release is the primary target, or if you want one small project to reach several of those destinations, that breadth is a practical reason to start there. It is a project-fit recommendation, not a measured claim that Unity will produce a higher frame rate on a particular device.
Decide your input method and screen shape early. A mobile-first prototype should test touch controls, readable text, pause behavior, and performance on an actual target device before you build a large amount of content.

Choose Unreal for a 3D-first visual target
Unreal is the stronger first candidate when the game is fundamentally 3D and its appeal depends on lighting, materials, environmental detail, or a cinematic camera. Blueprint lets you test game logic while you learn the editor, and Epic’s onboarding is designed around building a small 3D platformer in the first hour.
That choice carries a practical cost: the setup and editor workflow can be heavier for a small project. Treat this as an onboarding trade-off inferred from the documented 3D emphasis and hardware guidance, not as a benchmark proving that every Unreal project is slower or harder.
When both appear suitable
If either engine can make your planned game, run the smallest playable loop in both for one evening. Use the same checklist in each:
- Create one scene or level.
- Move a player or controllable object.
- Detect one collision or interaction.
- Show a win or lose state.
- Save and reopen the project.
Choose the editor in which you can explain where the scene, input, interaction, and save data live. That test measures your own clarity and momentum, not a universal engine ranking.
How the scripting choices affect learning
Unity: components first, code as the behavior grows
Unity’s component architecture encourages a concrete mental model: select an object, inspect its components, change a property, and attach a script when the object needs custom behavior. This can be approachable if you want to learn programming directly, because each script has a visible place in the scene.
A sensible learning order is input, movement, collision, a game-state variable, a user-interface message, and saving. Do not start by building an elaborate framework. A short script that moves one object and changes one state teaches more than a large architecture you cannot yet debug.

Unreal: prototype visually, then decide where code belongs
Blueprints let a beginner express a flow such as “when the player overlaps the key, set the key-collected variable and open the door.” Nodes make execution order and connections visible. As a project grows, you still need naming conventions, reusable components, debugging habits, and a plan for which systems belong in Blueprint or C++.
Blueprint is not a promise that programming concepts disappear. You still need variables, events, conditions, loops, references, and data flow. Its advantage is that you can see those relationships before committing to a text-language syntax.
Licensing and revenue thresholds
Unity Personal
Unity’s current pricing information lists Unity Personal as free for hobbyists and small indie teams and says no credit card is required. The plan supports publishing to web, desktop, AR/VR, and mobile. Unity also states that businesses with more than $200,000 in funding or annual revenue must use Unity Pro.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The $200,000 figure is an eligibility threshold, not a promise that every team below it will have identical commercial terms forever. Check Unity’s current pricing and eligibility language when your studio takes funding, records revenue, or prepares a commercial launch.
Unreal’s revenue-based royalty
Epic’s licensing pages state that game developers below $1 million in gross product revenue can use Unreal for free, with source-code access and all platforms and features. For qualifying commercial games, Epic says 5% of qualifying lifetime gross revenue above $1 million directly attributable to the product is subject to royalty. Epic Games Store revenue is excluded from that royalty.
The threshold concerns gross product revenue and the royalty applies to qualifying revenue above the threshold over the product’s lifetime. Read the current license before monetization, distribution changes, or a large funding event; licensing policies and definitions can change.

How to compare the two financially
For a hobby prototype, neither engine requires an upfront engine fee under the conditions above. The meaningful question arrives when the project becomes a business: Unity’s published trigger is based on funding or annual revenue, while Unreal’s published trigger is based on qualifying product revenue and a royalty above its threshold. Keep separate records for product revenue, store distribution, funding, and studio revenue so you can apply the correct policy.
Computer requirements and editor demands
Unity requirements
Unity publishes version-specific requirements rather than one timeless hardware specification. Its Unity 6.5 documentation lists Windows, macOS, and Linux support. For Linux, the documented baseline includes an X64 CPU with SSE2 and graphics supporting OpenGL 3.2 or a Vulkan-capable driver.
Before installing, check the requirements for the exact Unity version you intend to use and for the operating system on your development machine. A project can open successfully while still becoming uncomfortable once you add large textures, many editor windows, or device emulation.
Unreal requirements
Epic’s onboarding material says some features require DirectX 11 but recommends DirectX 12 for most Unreal games. It also asks developers to configure target-platform quality and ray-tracing settings. Those statements describe compatibility and configuration; they are not a controlled comparison of editor speed or game frame rates.
For a first Unreal project, start with a conservative quality preset and postpone ray tracing until the core loop works. This keeps visual experimentation from hiding problems in movement, collision, input, or level flow.

What hardware guidance cannot answer
Operating-system support does not tell you how large a level your computer can edit comfortably, how long a shader compile will take, or what frame rate a finished game will achieve. Those outcomes depend on project content, resolution, lighting, assets, and settings. Test the smallest representative scene on your actual development machine instead of choosing an engine from a specification sheet alone.

Start a first project in Unity
- Install Unity Hub. Use Hub as the starting point for installing the editor and managing projects.
- Check the version requirements. Unity’s first-project guide currently references Unity 6.1 or later; the Unity 6.5 requirements page is the relevant hardware check when that version is your target.
- Create a project from a beginner-appropriate template. Choose a 2D template for a 2D game or a lightweight 3D template for a small 3D experiment.
- Complete the Unity Essentials pathway. Follow Unity Learn’s beginner sequence instead of jumping between unrelated tutorials.
- Build one playable loop. Add a controllable object, one interaction, a clear success condition, and a restart path.
- Test the intended platform early. For mobile, deploy a tiny build and verify touch input, text size, orientation, and pause behavior before adding content.
The purpose of this sequence is to learn the editor’s object, component, scene, and script relationships while producing a working result.
Start a first project in Unreal Engine
- Verify graphics support. Review Epic’s requirements and plan around DirectX 12, which Epic recommends for most games, while noting that some features can use DirectX 11.
- Open the new-user documentation. Use the quick-start and scripting references alongside the editor rather than treating the first tutorial as the whole engine.
- Take “Your First Hour in Unreal Engine.” The course builds a simple 3D platformer and gives you a compact route through the editor.
- Prototype the core behavior in Blueprint. Implement movement, one interaction, and one state change before deciding whether any part needs C++.
- Configure target-platform quality. Set quality and ray-tracing options for the device you actually intend to support.
- Package a small test build. Confirm that input, collision, lighting, and the win condition work outside the editor.
This path uses Unreal’s documented Blueprint and 3D strengths while keeping the first project small enough to debug.
A practical decision tree
- Is the game primarily 2D? Start with Unity unless you have a specific Unreal reason and are comfortable building outside its 3D-focused beginner path.
- Is mobile the first release target? Unity is the more direct fit because its Personal plan documents mobile publishing and its learning path covers 2D and 3D.
- Is the game’s identity primarily 3D lighting, materials, or cinematic presentation? Start with Unreal and use Blueprint for the first prototype.
- Do you want to learn text-based scripting immediately? Unity’s component-and-script workflow may feel more direct.
- Do you want node-based logic before committing to C++? Unreal’s Blueprint system is the documented entry point.
- Will your computer struggle with a heavier 3D editor? Compare the exact version requirements and prototype the smallest scene before committing.
- Will the project approach a commercial threshold? Recheck Unity’s $200,000 funding-or-revenue rule or Unreal’s $1 million product-revenue threshold and 5% royalty terms at that time.
Common first-project mistakes
Choosing by screenshots alone
A striking renderer does not solve input design, game-state bugs, save failures, or scope creep. Build the smallest loop before judging visual potential.
Starting with a genre-sized design
“An RPG,” “an online shooter,” or “a farming simulator” is a production plan, not a first milestone. Define one room, one player action, one obstacle, and one outcome.
Postponing the target platform
Desktop controls, touch controls, web builds, and headset input impose different constraints. Decide the first target before the project accumulates assumptions that are expensive to remove.
Confusing an editor tutorial with a finished game
The Unity Essentials pathway and Unreal’s first-hour course teach navigation and core concepts. You still need a production plan for assets, testing, saves, accessibility, packaging, and updates.
Ignoring licensing until launch
Record funding and revenue as the project develops. Re-read the current license when monetization starts, when the studio crosses a published threshold, or when distribution moves between stores.
Recommended Free Tools
What the available evidence does—and does not—establish
The documented facts support a project-fit recommendation: Unity offers a clearly organized beginner route, explicit 2D coverage, and broad Personal-plan publishing destinations; Unreal offers Blueprint visual scripting and a 3D-first first-hour course, with licensing that uses a $1 million product-revenue threshold and a 5% royalty above it.
They do not establish that one engine is universally easier, faster, more profitable, or better for solo developers. No independent benchmark, controlled beginner usability study, survey, or market-share statistic is part of this comparison. Your prototype, computer, target platform, and willingness to learn the chosen workflow remain decisive.
