UniServer Reload is an independent community fork of The Uniform Server, created by Rob de Roy to preserve its simple, portable Windows development-server workflow while updating bundled PHP versions and addressing a virtual-host setup problem. The project is downloadable software—not a physical product—and the changes described here are the author’s account, not an independent test.
What is UniServer Reload?
The Uniform Server is a compact Windows WAMP stack: Apache, MySQL, PHP and phpMyAdmin packaged to run locally. Its appeal, as de Roy describes it, was a low-ceremony setup: unpack the files and start the server, without a conventional installer, registry entries or unwanted services.
UniServer Reload continues that approach as an independent open-source community fork under a BSD license. De Roy credits the original development team and describes its work as the foundation for the fork. It is a continuation by a separate project, not simply a new name for the original.

De Roy says he wanted to keep a portable Windows server workflow available while refreshing its components and fixing problems that had persisted. In his August 29, 2026 DEV Community article, he says the original project had not been updated since November 2023 and that its PHP support had stopped at PHP 8.3. Those are the author’s claims; the article does not independently establish the project’s release history.

He also says the original was still receiving nearly a hundred downloads per day. The article gives no analytics source or measurement method, so that figure should be understood as an attributed estimate, not a verified download statistic.
What changes does the fork describe?
PHP versions and extensions
De Roy says UniServer Reload bundles PHP 8.3, 8.4 and 8.5, with version switching available through its controller. He says the PHP binaries come from official Windows builds and are packaged by continuous integration (CI). The article also describes SQLite, cURL and fileinfo extensions as enabled by default, alongside development-oriented configuration limits.

These are version and feature claims in the author’s article, not a guarantee about every download or the project’s current release. Check the release notes and package details for the specific build before relying on a PHP version, extension or default setting.
Virtual-host setup
The author traces a problem with adding extra virtual hosts in the original controller to its handling of Windows hosts-file updates. His explanation is that the controller called a helper designed for interactive, graphical use as if it accepted command-line instructions. As a result, he says, the requested hosts-file entry was not written.

De Roy says the fork writes the hosts-file entries directly, deduplicates and verifies them, and reports errors. This describes the intended fix; it is not a substitute for checking the behavior of the particular release and Windows configuration you use.
HTTPS behavior
The article says a certificate is generated on first start for localhost and that the controller offers to trust it in Windows. It also says the controller detects Firefox’s separate certificate-store behavior and that created virtual hosts receive HTTPS coverage. These implementation details are reported by the author and have not been independently verified here.

Packaging and portability
De Roy describes two distribution options: a self-extracting archive and a plain ZIP. He says users can unpack the software in a project folder or on a USB stick, retaining the original project’s portable, installer-free style. The practical value of portability depends on the machine’s permissions, configuration and the way the server is used; the article does not establish that every setup will work unchanged across computers.
Build checks and releases
The author says CI starts Apache with each bundled PHP version and publishes a build only after it can serve pages successfully. That is a description of the project’s smoke-test process, not a test result conducted for this article.

He describes development as open on GitHub, with rolling development builds as well as versioned stable releases. Since release status can change, consult the project’s current release information before choosing a build. The author’s article points readers to GitHub releases, but no release link is available here to verify a particular version.

There is no basis here for a blanket migration recommendation: the available account comes from the fork’s author, and it is not an independently tested comparison. The choice depends on what your existing projects require and how much you value the fork’s reported updates.
- Check PHP compatibility: Confirm the PHP version and extensions your applications need, then verify that the specific UniServer Reload release provides them. A newer runtime can expose compatibility issues in older code.
- Protect existing configuration: Before trying a fork, preserve your project files, databases and server configuration. Test with a copy first if changing PHP or virtual-host behavior could affect active work.
- Test the workflows you depend on: In your environment, check startup, virtual-host resolution, HTTPS trust and any required database or PHP extensions rather than assuming the author’s implementation claims guarantee your setup.
- Choose a release deliberately: Compare the current stable release with rolling development builds, and consider the project’s recent maintenance activity and release notes. The article does not establish the current state of either branch.
If the original setup already meets your needs, this account alone does not show that you must move. If you want the portable workflow but need newer PHP support or the reported virtual-host fix, UniServer Reload is a project to evaluate against your own requirements.

De Roy’s article is useful first-person evidence of why he created UniServer Reload and what he says he changed. It does not independently confirm the original project’s history, the fork’s current release contents, the download estimate, the CI process or the behavior of its virtual-host and HTTPS features. Treat those as the author’s descriptions and verify release-specific details before depending on them.
