Union Pacific is the larger railroad by reported route mileage and operates mainly across the western and central United States; CSX serves the eastern United States and reaches Ontario and Quebec. The two carriers can serve overlapping industries, but their networks and the categories used in their 2025 financial and operating reports differ. For a real shipment, the useful comparison is the specific origin-to-destination lane, not a nationwide ranking.

What is the difference between Union Pacific and CSX?

The clearest distinction is geography. Union Pacific (UP) operates a western and central U.S. network, with connections to coastal ports, eastern gateways, and Mexico and Canada. CSX operates primarily east of the Mississippi River, with service extending into Washington, D.C., Ontario, and Quebec. Each railroad relies on connections with other carriers for freight that moves beyond its own tracks, so a connection to a market does not necessarily mean the company owns or operates the full route.

Both are major freight railroads, but the public figures in their 2025 annual filings are not perfectly comparable. UP reports freight revenue in three broad groups; CSX reports total company revenue across several business categories, including trucking. Their published operating measures also use different definitions and methods. Those disclosures can describe each railroad, but they do not establish a universal service-quality winner.

Which states and regions do the railroads serve?

Union Pacific: western and central reach

Union Pacific Corporation’s 2025 Form 10-K reports that its principal operating railroad, Union Pacific Railroad, had 32,889 route miles across 23 states in the western two-thirds of the United States at December 31, 2025. UP says its network links Pacific and Gulf Coast ports with Midwest and eastern gateways, and coordinates schedules with other rail carriers for freight moving to and from the Atlantic Coast, Southeast, Southwest, Canada, and Mexico. It says it serves all six major Mexico gateways. These broader routes involve connections and other arrangements; they should not be read as a claim that UP owns every connecting track. CSX: eastern reach plus Canada

CSX Corporation’s 2025 Form 10-K describes CSX Transportation (CSXT) as operating approximately 20,000 route miles. Its system serves major population centers in 26 states east of the Mississippi, the District of Columbia, and Canada’s Ontario and Quebec provinces. CSX also reports access to more than 70 port terminals on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts, Mississippi River, Great Lakes, and St. Lawrence Seaway. CSX 2025 Form 10-K

CSX says it connects thousands of production and distribution facilities through other Class I carriers and approximately 250 short-line and regional railroads. A short line is a smaller railroad that can provide local access and connect a customer or community to a larger network. As with UP, the existence of a connection does not guarantee a particular facility, route, or service plan is available for every shipment. CSX 2025 Form 10-K

Comparison point Union Pacific CSX
Reported network 32,889 route miles across 23 states in the western two-thirds of the United States at December 31, 2025 Approximately 20,000 route miles; 26 states east of the Mississippi, Washington, D.C., Ontario, and Quebec
Ports and gateways Links Pacific and Gulf ports to Midwest and eastern gateways; reports corridors to Mexico and Canada through connections and other arrangements Access to more than 70 port terminals on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts, Mississippi River, Great Lakes, and St. Lawrence Seaway
Network connections Coordinated schedules with other carriers for traffic to and from multiple regions, Canada, and Mexico Connections to thousands of facilities through other Class I carriers and approximately 250 short-line and regional railroads

On the figures reported in their 2025 filings, UP has more route miles. That is a measure of network extent, not proof that it can serve more origins or destinations for a particular customer, or that it offers better service. A carrier’s map is a useful first screen; confirm the actual facility, lane, interchange, and service with the carrier before planning a move.

Does CSX operate in the western United States?

The network description in CSX’s 2025 filing is centered on the eastern United States: its approximately 20,000 route miles serve 26 states east of the Mississippi, along with Washington, D.C., Ontario, and Quebec. That does not mean a CSX-connected shipment cannot travel farther west. CSX reports connections with other Class I carriers and regional railroads, which can extend a shipment beyond CSX’s own network. The practical distinction is between CSX’s own operating footprint and a broader route arranged through connecting railroads.

The same distinction applies to UP’s eastern and international reach. UP describes connections and coordinated schedules for freight traveling to and from eastern regions, Canada, and Mexico, but that should not be mistaken for ownership of all tracks on those routes. For either carrier, the shipper needs to verify the actual lane, carrier handoffs, and availability at the origin and destination.

How do their freight businesses and revenue compare?

UP reported $23.220 billion in 2025 freight revenue, divided among Bulk, Industrial, and Premium. CSX reported $14.1 billion in 2025 company revenue, divided among merchandise, intermodal, coal, trucking, and other revenue. These are company-reported totals, but their scopes and category definitions differ. In particular, UP’s Premium includes automobiles and intermodal, while CSX reports intermodal and merchandise separately and includes trucking revenue. The totals are not a like-for-like market-share comparison.

Trucking $816 million 6% of revenue; reported through Quality Carriers

UP’s revenue categories and percentages come from its 2025 Form 10-K; the percentages are shares of freight revenue, not shares of carloads or freight volume. UP 2025 Form 10-K CSX’s 2025 categories and total come from its Form 10-K and annual-report announcement. Its intermodal business combines rail movement with truck and terminal connections through approximately 30 terminals serving major markets east of the Mississippi. The categories show different business emphases, not which railroad is the better fit for a commodity. A shipper should ask how the company classifies the freight, what equipment and service it offers for the lane, and whether the movement requires rail-only service or transfers between rail and truck.

Why the revenue totals are not an apples-to-apples size test

UP’s $23.220 billion figure is specifically freight revenue. CSX’s $14.1 billion figure is total company revenue and includes its trucking business, reported through Quality Carriers. The reported amounts therefore answer slightly different accounting questions. The category names also group freight differently: for example, automobiles and intermodal are within UP Premium, whereas CSX reports intermodal separately from merchandise. A larger reported total in this comparison does not by itself show a carrier’s market share, shipment volume, profitability, rate level, or suitability for a particular customer.

The percentages also have a defined denominator. UP’s 33% Bulk, 37% Industrial, and 30% Premium shares are proportions of its freight revenue—not proportions of trains, cars, tonnage, or all company activity. CSX’s listed category percentages are shares of its reported company revenue. Readers comparing the companies should keep both the categories and denominators in view.

Do the published performance numbers show which railroad is faster?

No simple ranking follows from the figures. UP’s 2025 Form 10-K reports average train speed of 24.3 miles per hour, freight-car velocity of 225 daily miles per car, and average terminal dwell of 20.9 hours. CSX reports train velocity of 18.4 mph, dwell of 10.3 hours, 125,379 cars online, on-time originations of 72%, on-time arrivals of 61%, carload trip-plan performance of 78%, and intermodal trip-plan performance of 91%. These are company-reported indicators for their respective systems, not measurements made under one shared comparison framework.

Train movement, car movement, terminal time, and schedule reliability describe different parts of a shipment. Results are affected by route length, traffic mix, schedules, congestion, and metric definitions. For a service decision, ask for lane-specific transit time and consistency, the service commitment, and the definition and reporting period for any performance measure. Compare equivalent measures over the same period rather than comparing headline figures with different meanings.

What do speed, velocity, and dwell tell a shipper?

These measures are useful as context, but they are not interchangeable. A train-speed figure and a train-velocity figure have different labels in the companies’ disclosures, and UP and CSX do not establish that they are calculated in the same way. Freight-car velocity is a separate UP measure, while dwell describes time at terminals. A shipment’s total experience also depends on its route, traffic mix, schedule, congestion, and the company’s definitions.

CSX’s on-time arrival measure has a specific threshold: it counts an arrival within two hours of the scheduled time. CSX also warns that certain statistics are estimates that can change as actual figures settle, and that its calculation methods for several measures differ from STB methods. That caveat matters when reading a single-year headline number. For procurement, ask the carrier for performance specific to the proposed lane and service, and make sure any comparison uses the same measure, period, and timing threshold.

How should a shipper choose between Union Pacific and CSX?

Start with the shipment’s exact route and operating needs. One railroad may be a natural fit because it serves the origin or destination directly; another may reach it through an interchange or partner. A national footprint comparison cannot establish whether a customer’s siding, terminal, border crossing, or port can be served.

  1. Confirm both ends of the lane. Give each carrier the exact origin and destination facility, not just the city or state, and ask whether it can serve each directly or through a connection.
  2. Describe the freight and shipment size. Identify the commodity, expected volume, frequency, and equipment needs. A bulk unit train, individual carloads, finished vehicles, and containerized intermodal freight can require different service plans.
  3. Identify transfer requirements. Determine whether the move is rail-only or needs intermodal terminals and truck transfers. Ask which carrier handles each segment and where handoffs occur.
  4. Check gateways and interchange points. For port, border, or cross-country traffic, establish the specific gateway, connecting carrier, interchange plan, and responsibility for coordinating the movement.
  5. Request comparable service information. Ask for a lane-specific transit plan, frequency, service commitment, and a clearly defined measure of consistency. Make sure any performance figures cover the same period and use comparable definitions.
  6. Compare commercial terms directly. Obtain rates, accessorial charges, contract duration, volume assumptions, and other terms from the carriers. Public annual filings do not provide customer-specific prices or determine which railroad can serve a particular lane.

For a useful side-by-side evaluation, keep the shipment, time period, and requested service level constant. The decision may come down to local access, interchange complexity, equipment availability, port or border routing, service consistency, or the terms offered for the specific move—not the size of the entire railroad.

What information should you have before requesting a quote?

Prepare the exact origin and destination facility, the commodity, shipment size and frequency, and the type of equipment or service needed. Clarify whether the move is a carload, unit train, or intermodal shipment, and identify any port, border, or truck-transfer requirement. Those details help a carrier determine whether it can serve the movement directly or needs a connecting carrier, terminal, or other arrangement.

What does the proposed Union Pacific–Norfolk Southern transaction mean for CSX?

As of the Surface Transportation Board project page’s August 19, 2026 update, Union Pacific Corporation, Union Pacific Railroad Company, Norfolk Southern Corporation, and Norfolk Southern Railway had filed a revised application on April 30, 2026, seeking authority for UP to acquire control of Norfolk Southern (NS) and consolidate their rail operations. The application was under regulatory review; it was not a completed merger. CSX is not a party to the transaction. STB Union Pacific–Norfolk Southern project page

The STB page describes the proposal as mostly end-to-end, with existing UP and NS systems overlapping in Missouri and Illinois. It says the combined system, if authorized, would be known as Union Pacific and comprise approximately 50,000 miles across 43 states, counting lines over which the applicants have trackage rights. That proposed figure is not the current UP-operated network, and the transaction’s status can change after the page’s stated update.

For a comparison with CSX, keep the proposal separate from current operating facts. UP’s 32,889 route miles and CSX’s approximately 20,000 route miles are descriptions of their respective current networks in 2025 filings. The approximately 50,000-mile, 43-state figure belongs to the proposed combined UP–NS system if regulators authorize it; it is not a current network figure and should not be used to imply that CSX is involved.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which railroad is bigger, Union Pacific or CSX?

By route mileage reported in their 2025 filings, Union Pacific is larger: UP reported 32,889 route miles across 23 states, compared with CSX’s approximately 20,000 route miles. Mileage measures network extent, not service quality or whether a railroad can serve a specific shipment.

Which states does Union Pacific serve?

UP’s 2025 Form 10-K describes its 32,889-mile network as covering 23 states in the western two-thirds of the United States. It also describes connections and coordinated schedules for traffic reaching Midwest and eastern gateways, ports, Canada, and Mexico; those connections do not mean UP owns every track along those routes.

Does CSX operate in the western United States?

CSX’s own network is described as serving 26 states east of the Mississippi, Washington, D.C., Ontario, and Quebec. CSX can connect freight with other Class I carriers and short-line or regional railroads, so a shipment may continue west beyond CSX’s own route miles through connections.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do Union Pacific and CSX compare for freight shipping?

Compare the exact origin and destination, commodity, shipment size and equipment, rail-only or intermodal needs, gateways and interchange points, lane-specific service plan, and quoted commercial terms. Their annual-report revenue categories and operating statistics use different scopes or methods, so nationwide totals alone do not identify the better carrier for a move.

Is Union Pacific’s proposed Norfolk Southern deal already complete, and is CSX involved?

No. The STB project page, last updated August 19, 2026, described a revised UP–Norfolk Southern application filed April 30, 2026, as under regulatory review. CSX is not a party. The proposed approximately 50,000-mile network across 43 states is contingent on authorization, not the current UP network.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: UP has more reported route miles and a western and central network; CSX is focused on the East and also serves Ontario and Quebec. But route mileage, revenue totals, and company-reported performance measures do not provide a universal winner. Shippers should verify facility access, connections, equipment, gateways, lane-specific service, and prices directly with the carriers. The UP–Norfolk Southern proposal remains distinct from CSX and, as of the cited STB update, was still under regulatory review.
