If your screen scrolls without you touching it, first check whether it happens in one app or across the device. Then disconnect external devices—mouse, keyboard, or other pointing devices—one at a time and see whether the behavior changes. This can help narrow the source, but it does not prove a device is faulty. Unexpected scrolling can come from a mouse wheel, touchpad, keyboard input, touchscreen, or a setting.

Start by narrowing down the source

  1. Check where it happens. Note whether scrolling occurs in a single app or in multiple windows and menus. A problem limited to one app may have a different cause from scrolling across the device.
  2. Disconnect external input devices one at a time. Unplug or disconnect the mouse and keyboard, then observe whether scrolling changes. If practical, test other external pointing devices individually.
  3. Notice the movement. Scrolling that continues when you are not touching the device, or that changes when a particular input is disconnected, is a clue to investigate that input—not proof of a specific failure.

The steps below focus on Windows and mouse troubleshooting because the available device-specific guidance is strongest there. For an Apple device or another system not covered here, use support instructions for its exact model rather than assuming the Windows steps apply.

If you use an external mouse

Check Windows mouse settings

In Windows 11, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse. Microsoft’s mouse settings include the number of lines to scroll per wheel movement, whether the wheel scrolls one screen or multiple lines, scroll direction, and whether inactive windows scroll when you hover over them. Check whether those options match the behavior you are seeing; scrolling an inactive window on hover can look unexpected if you do not realize it is enabled. Microsoft: Change mouse settings.

Inspect the wheel and connection

For Logitech mice, Logitech recommends checking that the wheel moves freely and is not physically stuck, reviewing scroll or gesture settings in the relevant Logitech software, and checking for firmware updates. It also suggests reconnecting or re-pairing the mouse, connecting it or its receiver directly rather than through a hub or switch, trying another USB port on Windows, and testing the mouse on another computer. If the behavior changes on another computer, that helps narrow the issue but does not identify the failed component by itself. Logitech also mentions using compressed air to clean the scroll wheel; this is one troubleshooting suggestion, not a guaranteed fix. Check current compatibility before choosing Logitech software, as some older utilities are no longer maintained and Logi Options+ is intended for supported devices. Logitech: Troubleshooting for scroll and gesture issues.

If you use a Windows touchpad

Microsoft says touchpad problems can stem from a missing or outdated driver. For Windows 10 and Windows 11, Microsoft recommends checking for driver updates through Windows Update. Device Manager is another way to update the driver; if updating does not help or there is no update available, reinstalling the touchpad through Device Manager may help. Follow Microsoft’s device-specific instructions rather than removing an unrelated driver. Microsoft: Fix touchpad problems in Windows.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft. The touchpad guidance covers Windows 10 and 11, but Windows 10 no longer receives standard support after that date. Microsoft: Change mouse settings.

If keyboard input might be involved

A stuck or repeatedly activating key is worth checking if the movement resembles keyboard navigation, but the Microsoft guidance cited here does not diagnose stuck keys as a cause of scrolling. Windows accessibility settings may help you investigate input behavior: Filter Keys can ignore brief or repeated keystrokes, and Toggle Keys can play a sound when Scroll Lock and other lock keys are pressed. These features affect keyboard input; they do not establish that a key caused the scrolling. Microsoft: Make your mouse, keyboard, and other input devices easier to use.

If the device has a touchscreen

A Microsoft Q&A response for the Surface Pro 7 suggests temporarily disabling its touchscreen and checking whether the scrolling continues while navigating with a mouse or touchpad. If the issue stops with touch disabled, phantom touches are one possible explanation. The response also suggests checking whether the behavior occurs in UEFI to help distinguish possible hardware behavior from a Windows software issue. This is case-specific Surface troubleshooting, not a universal procedure for other devices; consult support for your model before changing firmware or startup settings. Microsoft Learn Q&A: Surface Pro 7 scrolling down continuously.

If you use Android with a mouse

Google describes Android’s Autoclick (dwell timing) accessibility feature as automatically activating an action after the mouse pointer stays still for a set interval. It is off by default, and menu labels may vary by device. This feature concerns pointer actions; it is not a general explanation for touchscreen auto-scrolling. Google: Autoclick (dwell timing).

When to seek device-specific support

If disconnecting input devices and checking the relevant settings does not narrow down the behavior, or if it continues across apps and input methods, consult support for your exact computer, tablet, or phone. A single observation—such as the issue stopping after disconnecting one device—can guide troubleshooting, but is not enough on its own to determine whether the cause is the peripheral, its connection, a setting, or another fault.
