A cloud object can stop resolving under its name as soon as a delete succeeds, yet remain recoverable as an older version or a soft-deleted object. “Deleted” can therefore mean several different things: the live name no longer works, recovery is no longer available, or the service has reached its permanent-deletion state. None of those service states, by itself, tells you when every physical copy on underlying media has been erased.
What does “deleted” mean in object storage?
For cloud object storage, separate four events that are often collapsed into one:
- The service accepts the delete request. This confirms that the request was accepted, not necessarily that every retained version or copy has been removed.
- The live object name stops resolving. Reads by that name may fail even when older versions remain.
- The data remains recoverable. Versioning, soft-delete policies, or both may preserve an object for restoration.
- The service reaches permanent deletion. This is the end of the provider’s recoverable retention state; it is not a universal statement about physical media erasure.
When you need to know what happened, identify which of these states matters. For an application, the key question may be whether a read by name succeeds. For recovery planning, it is whether a retained version exists. For compliance, confirm the service’s retention and permanent-deletion terms rather than treating a successful API response as proof of physical erasure.
When does a successful delete make the object unavailable?
Google Cloud Storage: name-level availability
Google Cloud Storage documents strong read-after-delete consistency: after a successful deletion, an immediate object download or metadata request returns 404. Listing is also strongly consistent. This describes what clients see through the service for the object’s current name; it does not prove that all versions or retained copies are gone. Google Cloud Storage consistency

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required

- The available storage capacity may vary.
There is a cache-layer exception: a public object served from a cache may remain available until its cache lifetime expires, even after the authoritative object has been deleted. If a deleted public object still appears online, distinguish a cached response from a successful read from the storage service itself.
Amazon S3: versioned buckets
In an Amazon S3 bucket with versioning enabled, a delete of the current object adds a delete marker. The marker makes the current key behave as deleted, but it does not destroy the prior object version. Permanently removing a particular version is a separate operation and requires the relevant permission. Amazon S3: deleting object versions

Can you restore an object after deleting it?
Versioning keeps older object versions
With Google Cloud Storage Object Versioning enabled, deleting a live object turns that version into a noncurrent version rather than immediately removing it. Noncurrent versions remain accessible until explicitly deleted; soft delete can then retain a deleted noncurrent object as well. Replacing an object also ends the old version’s live storage lifetime and begins a new one, because Cloud Storage treats objects as immutable versions. Google Cloud Storage describes soft-deleted objects as non-readable but restorable during the bucket’s soft-delete policy period. Its current documentation gives a seven-day default for supported buckets. That is a documented default, not a guarantee for every bucket: check the actual bucket policy and supported configuration before relying on a recovery window. Google Cloud Storage soft delete

When does permanent deletion happen?
For a soft-deleted Google Cloud Storage object, the API identifies a hardDeleteTime at which it becomes permanently deleted. The API does not allow a soft-deleted object to be deleted immediately, so a normal delete request is not a way to bypass the recovery period. Google Cloud Storage Objects: delete API
Do not treat lifecycle eligibility as a precise deadline either. Google Cloud Storage processes lifecycle actions asynchronously; the provider advises against relying on a fixed delay between an object meeting a lifecycle condition and the action occurring. A hold or an unfulfilled retention policy can also prevent the delete action. Google Cloud Storage lifecycle management

For a particular object, the practical answer depends on its versioning state, soft-delete policy, lifecycle rules, and any holds or retention requirements. Check those settings and the service’s reported object state rather than inferring a permanent-deletion time from the moment the object disappeared from a listing.
Does service deletion mean physical erasure?
No universal physical-erasure time follows from the service behaviors described above. Provider documentation explains API-visible states and retention mechanisms; it does not establish when every underlying media block or out-of-band copy is physically overwritten. A historical study of the YAFFS log-structured filesystem likewise found no temporal guarantee for physical removal in the particular system it examined. That finding is specific to the studied system and should not be generalized to every filesystem or cloud provider. YAFFS: Yet Another Flash File System

How to check what “deleted” means for your object
- Check the live name. Make a read or metadata request after the delete. A 404 can establish that the current name no longer resolves under the provider’s documented behavior; it does not establish that older versions are gone.
- Inspect versioning and delete markers. Determine whether the bucket retains noncurrent versions or whether deletion created a marker. If you need to remove a specific version, follow that provider’s version-deletion operation and permissions.
- Check soft-delete retention. Confirm whether it is enabled, the applicable policy duration, and the service-reported permanent-deletion time where available.
- Review lifecycle rules and blockers. Treat lifecycle processing as asynchronous, and check for holds or retention policies that can prevent deletion.
- Check caches and copies separately. A public cached response can outlast the authoritative object; backups or copies outside the object-storage state are separate from the object’s deletion status.
Apple’s Core Data documentation offers a useful but separate example of a deletion record: a persistent-history change of delete type can preserve a dictionary of attributes as a “tombstone.” That term refers to a record of a deletion in that database context, not a universal object-storage mechanism.
