What kind of game is Under the Island?
Under the Island is a 2D action-adventure with a 1990s-inspired feel. Nintendo’s product description follows Nia, a newcomer to Seashell Island, and local girl Avocado as they investigate why the island is destined to sink beneath the ocean. The listed activities include top-down exploration, puzzles, and combat across six regions, with settings such as sentient greenhouses, frozen caverns, and sawmills.
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
Nintendo’s description also mentions unusual enemies, artefacts and abilities, animal companions, a cook-off, and lost cats. Those details come from the publisher’s product listing, rather than an independent assessment of gameplay.
How the physical editions differ from the digital release
The game’s digital release was February 17, 2026. Slime King Games’ release-date announcement named Nintendo Switch, Steam, PS4 and PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series as launch platforms. The physical retail announcement, by contrast, names only PS5 and Nintendo Switch.

- New stages and fighters are joined by the combined rosters of every past Super Smash Bros. Game
- Challenge others anytime, anywhere, whether you're on the couch or on the go
- Play any way you want—locally, online, in TV mode, Tabletop mode, Handheld mode, or even with GameCube Controllers
- Fight faster and smarter with new and returning techniques, like the perfect shield and directional air dodge
- Face off in 2-4 player battles, or play against the computer
Digital store details should not be assumed to apply to the physical packages. For example, PlayStation’s digital listing says buyers receive both PS4 and PS5 versions; that entitlement is not established for the physical edition. Nintendo’s UK digital listing gives a 638.0 MB download size, one-player play, PEGI 7, and Japanese, English, German, and Chinese language options. These are UK digital listing details, not confirmed physical-package specifications.
Nintendo’s Canada digital listing identifies Switch 2 compatibility as supported, with behavior consistent with Switch. That does not establish a separate Switch 2 physical edition. The PlayStation digital listing also lists Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), English, German, and Japanese screen languages; language availability may depend on the edition and region.

Which physical version should you choose?
The confirmed physical options are PS5 and Nintendo Switch. Choose based on the platform you own and the retailer’s exact listing. The announced US and UK prices differ between platforms, but the available announcement does not establish technical differences, package extras, or retailer-specific bonuses.
- Check that the listing is for the physical edition, not a digital code or download.
- Confirm the platform and region before ordering, especially if you are comparing prices across retailers.
- Review the retailer’s package description for any details on physical contents or required downloads; those details are not established in the launch announcement.
Who made and published Under the Island?
Slime King Games is identified as the creator and developer, while Top Hat Studios is named as publisher. Curveball Games and Top Hat Studios announced the physical retail release. In its February 2026 release-date post, Slime King Games said the game took “about 7 years to make,” including five years as a part-time project and around 2.5 years full-time. That is the developer’s approximate account of its timeline.
