If Instagram won’t open, first check whether the problem follows your account or is limited to a particular network or country. A VPN may help with some network or location blocks, but it cannot overturn an Instagram account restriction, guarantee access, or make bypassing a school or employer’s network policy appropriate.
First, identify what is blocking Instagram
Try Instagram on mobile data or another trusted network. If it works there but not on one Wi-Fi connection, the first network may be filtering access. If it stops working only while you are in a particular country, regional blocking may be involved. If Instagram shows a message that your account is disabled, treat that as an account issue instead.
A censorship monitor reported that Instagram was blocked in China, Iran, and Russia in its connections on 3 October 2026: 3 of 24 countries tested. That is a dated, limited test—not a complete or official list of where Instagram is unavailable. VPNAlert’s test and country results may help explain a location-specific failure, but conditions can change.

For a network or location block, try a VPN carefully
A VPN routes your connection through a server in another location, so Instagram may see a different apparent location. This can sometimes help when a network or regional restriction is the obstacle. It does not guarantee Instagram will connect: the network may block VPN traffic, a server may fail, or the app may still encounter a separate problem. A general method is to connect to a VPN server in a country where Instagram is available, then reopen Instagram. Gizmodo’s 2026 guide describes this approach; it does not establish that it will work for every reader or network.

- Choose cautiously. Get a VPN from the official app store for your device. Review its privacy policy and terms, including how it handles data, and check that it is available where you are. If you need it on a restrictive network, check whether it offers connection obfuscation; availability and effectiveness depend on the service and network.
- Connect to a location where Instagram works. Pick an available server in that country and confirm that the VPN app reports an active connection.
- Fully close and reopen Instagram. Try loading it again after the VPN connection is active.
- If it still fails, troubleshoot the connection. Confirm the VPN remains connected and try another available server. If Instagram works on another trusted network, that points back to the original network rather than an account decision.
These steps are troubleshooting options, not a tested provider ranking or promise of access. A VPN changes routing and apparent location; it cannot reverse an account decision. If a school or employer manages the network, use access routes permitted by its policy rather than trying to evade its restrictions. Local rules governing VPN use and access to blocked services vary, so check the rules that apply where you are.
If Instagram says your account is disabled
Do not keep changing networks or VPN servers to solve an account restriction. Instagram’s official help guidance says a disabled-account notice appears when you try to log in; if you believe the disabling was a mistake, follow the review instructions shown in the app. The retrieved official help page is in Portuguese, so the wording and labels may differ in your localized version. Protect your account and device
Keep your password off third-party unblock sites
Do not enter your Instagram credentials on a third-party unblock page, clone site, or unfamiliar login form. Meta says: “People should never provide their Facebook or Instagram password anywhere online outside of logging in through the official Facebook or Instagram website and apps or through the ‘Login with Facebook’ button that we allow authorized third-party developers to provide on their site.” Meta’s clone-site safety guidance.
Be wary of free VPN apps
A free service is not automatically unsafe, but do not install one without checking who operates it and what its terms say. The FBI warned on 12 March 2026 that some free VPN services may enroll devices in residential proxy networks without users’ informed consent. It advises caution with free VPN applications.
