You can automate when a stream starts and stops, but scheduling an event alone does not guarantee a fully unattended broadcast. The encoder must send the audio and video, and the platform may also require its broadcast to be made live. The right setup depends on which of those steps your encoder or automation system can control.
What has to happen for an unattended stream to go live?
There are two separate jobs:
- Send the program: An encoder takes the audio and video from your source and delivers them to the platform. YouTube encoder workflows use a stream URL and stream key; an encoder can be software or standalone hardware. YouTube’s encoder guide explains the standard setup.
- Make the broadcast live: The platform’s broadcast must be in a live state. YouTube’s documented scheduled workflow has the creator connect the encoder, wait for a preview, and select Go live. A scheduled event by itself therefore does not establish that the encoder will start or that the platform will make the broadcast live automatically.
For a hands-free stream, arrange automation for the encoder’s output and any required platform-side transition—or choose a workflow whose documented controls handle both. The content source, network connection, and recovery behavior matter too, so unattended does not mean failure-proof.
How do I make my YouTube stream start automatically?
Schedule the event and automate the encoder
- In YouTube Studio, create and schedule the live event with the time and settings you need.
- Configure your encoder with the event’s stream URL and stream key. Keep the key private; do not expose it in screenshots or public examples.
- Set the encoder or production system to begin sending the program at the scheduled time and stop when the event ends.
- Check the event’s broadcast settings and the encoder’s documented controls to confirm whether the platform still requires a person to select Go live. YouTube’s standard instructions include a preview and that manual step, so do not assume a scheduled event removes it.
Run a complete scheduled test before relying on the setup. Confirm that the source is producing usable audio and video, the encoder connects, the platform broadcast reaches the intended live state, and the system stops as planned.

This route can automate platform-side broadcast management, but it is an integration project, not a simple checkbox. Your encoder must still send the actual program; API control of a broadcast does not create or transmit audio and video on its own.
Can I stream to Twitch without pressing the stream button?
Twitch’s documented workflow uses an encoder to deliver video to Twitch’s ingest system. The encoder is configured with a stream key, and Twitch identifies RTMP as a live-video protocol it uses. Its broadcasting documentation and stream-key help describe those parts of the process.

To avoid manually starting the stream, automate the chosen encoder or production system to begin and stop sending at the required times. Verify the controls in your particular software or hardware setup; the cited Twitch materials do not establish a native Twitch scheduler that handles unattended starts for every setup.

YouTube recognizes both software encoders and standalone hardware encoders. Hardware is an option, not a requirement. Compare the capabilities that determine whether your specific stream can run unattended:

If one production needs to reach YouTube and Twitch, check that the encoder or production system supports the intended destinations in your configuration. The platform documentation alone does not confirm the compatibility or reliability of a particular third-party device or service.
Check eligibility and plan for continuous streams
- YouTube’s current guidance requires channel verification, no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, and a streamer who is at least 16 years old. First-time live-streaming activation can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-streaming access requirements and encoder setup guidance.
- YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. If you are planning a longer continuous stream, account for the archive limitation described in its encoder help.
Test the full schedule before leaving it unattended
Start with a test at the actual scheduled time rather than checking only that the encoder can connect manually. Verify the platform state, audio and video, event timing, and planned stop. Then test the failure cases your setup can realistically encounter, such as losing the network or restarting a device, and establish how the stream recovers—or how you will be alerted if it does not. The platform procedures document how to configure and manage broadcasts; they do not guarantee a particular encoder’s unattended reliability.
