If Outlook or Teams displays “Something went wrong [7q6ch]” during sign-in or Microsoft 365 activation, the tag alone does not identify one precise fault. Microsoft Q&A reports show the same 7Q6Ch tag alongside different numeric codes, including 2147500037, 2147746132, and 3221815318. That means a fix aimed at one supposed error code may not apply to every affected computer.
The strongest pattern in the available reports is a problem with Office authentication state on VDI or shared-computer environments, particularly where Microsoft 365 Shared Computer Activation and persistent writable user volumes are involved. However, those reports do not establish a single Microsoft-confirmed root cause. Use the steps below to separate a local profile problem, a Windows authentication component problem, an Office deployment issue, and a tenant-side issue.
What the 7Q6Ch error means
7Q6Ch is an error tag shown by the Microsoft 365 sign-in or activation experience. It is not a reliably documented public error code with one defined meaning. In affected reports, users saw it in Outlook, Teams, or Office activation, sometimes with a Correlation ID, timestamp, DPTI, and a separate numeric error code.
Microsoft has not published a specific definition or universal fix for 7Q6Ch. In the relevant Microsoft Q&A discussion, moderators indicated that Microsoft Technical Support would need to inspect advanced logs. Do not assume that the tag definitively means cached credentials, browser cookies, licensing failure, or a particular Microsoft Entra token problem.

Before changing anything, record the complete error screen:
- Error tag: 7Q6Ch
- Numeric error code, if shown
- Correlation ID
- Timestamp, including time zone
- DPTI or any other diagnostic identifier
- Whether the failure occurs in Outlook, Teams, Word, or all Microsoft 365 apps
The additional values matter because the same tag has been reported with different numeric codes.
First checks
- Test the account in a browser. Open Outlook on the web and Office.com. If web sign-in also fails, check the account, password, multifactor authentication, Conditional Access, and service health before repairing the desktop apps.
- Check whether the problem follows the user. Try the same account on another managed computer, or try another licensed account on the affected computer. A failure for one user usually points toward profile or account state; a failure for many users points more strongly toward the device image, Office deployment, network controls, or a Microsoft 365 service issue.
- Confirm the computer’s date and time. Incorrect time or time zone can interfere with authentication. In Windows, go to Settings > Time & language > Date & time, enable automatic time, and select Sync now.
- Restart Windows completely. In VDI, signing out of Office is not always equivalent to ending the Windows session. One report described a user being unable to sign back in to Office activation until Windows was logged out and a fresh session was started. This is an anecdotal session-state issue, not a guaranteed fix.
Check VDI, Shared Computer Activation, and profile management
Several reports came from virtual desktop environments using Microsoft 365 Shared Computer Activation and persistent writable user volumes. In one environment, resetting the writable volume made the issue return, suggesting that the authentication state was being retained or reintroduced by profile management. That is an observed correlation, not proof that every 7Q6Ch case is caused by VDI.

Microsoft also says that roaming the work-account device certificate issued by MS-Organization-Access is unsupported. Review the profile product’s exclusions rather than simply deleting authentication data from every user profile. If a writable volume or profile reset is being considered, preserve logs and test with a controlled account first.

Repair the Windows authentication components
Microsoft documents a related desktop sign-in failure, “Something went wrong [1001]”, involving the Web Account Manager (WAM) plug-in and the AAD.BrokerPlugin package. That guidance is not a 7Q6Ch-specific fix, but the same Windows authentication components can be relevant when investigating a similar desktop sign-in symptom.
Run the following commands in PowerShell under the affected user’s account, not an elevated administrator PowerShell window:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Add-AppxPackage -Register "$env:windirSystemAppsMicrosoft.AAD.BrokerPlugin_cw5n1h2txyewyAppxmanifest.xml" -DisableDevelopmentMode -ForceApplicationShutdown
Add-AppxPackage -Register "$env:windirSystemAppsMicrosoft.Windows.CloudExperienceHost_cw5n1h2txyewyAppxmanifest.xml" -DisableDevelopmentMode -ForceApplicationShutdown
Close Office applications before running the commands. Restart Windows afterward and test Outlook or Teams again. If the command reports that the manifest cannot be found, the Windows image may be customized, damaged, or missing the expected system package; do not copy package files from another computer.
Microsoft’s related guidance also notes that security software can interfere with the WAM plug-in. Check endpoint-security logs for blocks involving AAD.BrokerPlugin or related Windows account components. Work with the security administrator on a documented, temporary test policy rather than permanently disabling protection.
Do not disable WAM or ADAL
Some troubleshooting posts recommend disabling WAM or ADAL through registry settings. Microsoft explicitly says that disabling ADAL or WAM is not recommended for fixing Office sign-in or activation issues. It can hide the underlying problem, break modern authentication, and make later diagnosis harder.

Update Office through your normal deployment channel
Historical Microsoft Q&A reports associated some incidents with Office Version 2407, Build 16.0.17830.20166. Other users reported improvement after moving to versions such as 2409, 2410, 2404, or 2302. These reports were made in September–November 2024 and do not establish a currently supported “bad build” or prove that any one version resolves 7Q6Ch generally.
Use the update channel approved by your organization. For a directly managed Office installation, open an Office app and select File > Account > Update Options > Update Now. In managed environments, update through Microsoft Intune, Configuration Manager, or the organization’s Microsoft 365 Apps deployment process. Do not move production VDI users to an old build solely because an incident-era report mentioned it.
If you are testing a different Office build, document the channel, version, build number, Shared Computer Activation setting, and profile state so the result can be reproduced. Reports also showed the problem on Semi-Annual 2402 and Semi-Annual Preview 2408, so changing channels is not a guaranteed solution.
Other suggestions that are not confirmed fixes
Several workarounds appear in user discussions but should be treated cautiously:
| Suggestion | How to treat it |
|---|---|
| Disable Cached Exchange Mode | One participant said it appeared to help, but there is no Microsoft validation for 7Q6Ch. It may also be controlled by Group Policy. |
Run sfc /scannow |
One user reported that repairing system files restored activation. This is not a documented 7Q6Ch procedure. Use it when there is evidence of Windows corruption, not as the primary diagnosis. |
| Delete every credential or identity cache | Broad deletion can destroy useful diagnostic state and may not address a profile-management or WAM problem. Follow a documented recovery plan and preserve the error details first. |
| Downgrade to Office 2302 or upgrade to 2409/2410 | These were historical user-reported outcomes, not current universal guidance. |
Use web and mobile apps as a temporary workaround
If browser sign-in works, use Outlook on the web, Office web applications, or the Outlook and Teams mobile apps while the desktop issue is investigated. Microsoft lists these as workarounds for related desktop authentication failures. They do not repair the Windows profile or Office installation, but they can restore access without repeatedly retrying the broken desktop sign-in flow.

Should I update Office to version 2409 or 2410?
Those versions were mentioned in historical 2024 user reports, but they are not a current, universal 7Q6Ch remedy. Update through your organization’s approved Office channel and record the build being tested.
Does disabling WAM or ADAL fix the problem?
Microsoft explicitly advises against disabling WAM or ADAL as a general Office sign-in or activation fix.
Why is the issue common in VDI environments?
Multiple reports involved VDI, Shared Computer Activation, and persistent writable volumes. Profile-management rules can preserve or roam unsupported identity data, but this is an observed environment correlation rather than a confirmed cause for every case.

The Bottom Line
7Q6Ch does not have one verified meaning or one reliable fix. Start by recording all diagnostic fields and testing web access, another device, and a fresh Windows session. In VDI or shared-computer deployments, inspect profile exclusions and Shared Computer Activation. Check the WAM components and endpoint-security logs, using Microsoft’s documented PowerShell registration commands only as a related troubleshooting step. Keep WAM and ADAL enabled, avoid treating old Office-version reports as current guidance, and escalate through Microsoft 365 Support with the complete evidence if the error persists.
