Two 2011 laboratory studies found that cold atom–ion chemistry can depend sharply on the reaction pathway and the ion’s electronic state. One measured an unexpectedly fast reaction between ytterbium ions and calcium atoms; another found a much higher reaction rate for excited calcium ions colliding with rubidium atoms. These controlled experiments can help improve models of cold interstellar chemistry, but they did not measure reactions in space.
What the two studies investigated
The work covered two distinct atom–ion pairs, not one shared experiment. Eric Hudson’s UCLA team studied 174Yb+ ions with 40Ca atoms. Stefan Willitsch’s Basel group studied Ca+ ions with Rb atoms. Both used hybrid traps to investigate cold collisions, combining experiment with theoretical analysis.
Why the ytterbium–calcium reaction stood out
Rellergert and colleagues reported a reaction rate constant of (2 ± 1.3) × 10−10 cm3 s−1 across temperatures from 1 mK to 10 K. The preprint reports this measurement and says theory reproduced it. The published paper described the rate as four orders of magnitude higher than recent measurements in other heteronuclear systems—a specific comparison, not a general rule for all ultracold reactions. The Physical Review Letters article appeared in volume 107, issue 24, as article 243201, on 9 December 2011.

The proposed explanation was strong radiative charge transfer. In this process, the charge arrangement changes through a pathway involving photon emission. The team used calculations based on the CaYb+ molecular structure to explain the rapid reaction. The measured rate is an experimental result; radiative charge transfer is the study’s mechanistic explanation.

The Chemistry World report offered a reason slow encounters might make radiative pathways more consequential: the partners have more time to interact than in a rapid room-temperature collision. That explanation applies to the system and interpretation discussed there; it does not mean every cold collision reacts faster.
How ion excitation affected calcium–rubidium chemistry
Hall and colleagues studied cold collisions between laser-cooled Ca+ ions and Rb atoms. Their work considered non-adiabatic and radiative charge exchange, as well as radiative molecule formation. These are distinct outcomes: charge exchange changes which partner carries the charge, while radiative molecule formation produces a bound molecular ion with photon emission.

As reported by Chemistry World in 2011, the reaction rate was more than 100 times higher when Ca+ began in its second excited state than when it began in its ground state. This comparison is specific to the reported Ca+ + Rb experiment and state preparation. The study’s interpretation was that dominant pathways were considerably enhanced in electronically excited reaction channels.

Chemical models of cold, dilute space environments rely on reaction information to represent how gas changes over time. The Chemistry World report noted that databases were incomplete and sometimes depended on approximations. These experiments illustrate why system-specific measurements and quantum calculations can matter: reaction rates and pathways may be sensitive to details such as the collision partners and electronic state.

The astrophysical connection is a modelling implication, not a direct detection. The experiments used controlled laboratory traps; they did not reproduce an interstellar cloud or establish that either exact reaction dominates in a particular astronomical environment. Their value is in showing that simplified assumptions about cold ion–neutral chemistry may miss important, system-dependent processes.

How to read the evidence
- Direct measurement: Rellergert and colleagues measured the 174Yb+ + 40Ca reaction rate over 1 mK to 10 K.
- Mechanistic interpretation: For that pair, the study attributed the rapid reaction to strong radiative charge transfer, supported by molecular-structure calculations.
- State-dependent comparison: The more-than-100-fold rate difference for Ca+ + Rb is the comparison reported for second-excited-state versus ground-state Ca+.
- Broader implication: The studies inform how cold interstellar chemistry might be modelled; they do not prove the prevalence of these particular reactions in space.
