Racket: Nx is the better multiplayer choice based on documented support as of October 13, 2026. Its Steam listing explicitly includes online competitive PvP, online co-op and cross-platform multiplayer. Ultimechs also has an online arena concept, but Resolution Games announced that online multiplayer support will end on October 20, 2026, after which the game will become single-player-only. That makes Ultimechs a short-term multiplayer option rather than a dependable long-term purchase. This comparison covers published features, not hands-on matchmaking, latency or player-population testing.

The short answer

Choose Racket: Nx if your priority is continuing online play with friends or opponents. Its Steam product page names two online formats—competitive PvP and cooperative play—and lists cross-platform multiplayer. Those are the clearest, currently documented multiplayer commitments in this comparison.

Choose Ultimechs only if you specifically want its mech-versus-mech arena sport and expect to play before the announced service change. Resolution Games says online multiplayer will be retired on October 20, 2026. The same announcement says Ultimechs will remain playable in single-player mode and will be delisted on that date. Anyone deciding after October 20 should verify the current store and service status before treating Ultimechs as an online game.

This is a feature-based decision. The available listings and announcement do not establish which game has more active players, faster matchmaking, lower latency or a healthier regional community.

What Ultimechs is

A mech arena built around scoring goals

Ultimechs is a free-to-play VR arena sports game from Resolution Games. You remotely pilot a mech and use rocket-powered fists called GauntJets to strike a ball toward the opposing goal. The core appeal is the physical spectacle of operating a large machine while timing powered punches as the ball moves through an enclosed arena.

That premise is different from a conventional racquet sport. You are not holding a virtual racquet and returning a ball over a net. Instead, the game frames scoring as a team arena contest: position your mech, line up a GauntJet hit and try to drive the ball into the other side’s goal. The description supports the team-scoring concept, but it does not provide a complete roster of match sizes, rules, arenas or ranked systems, so those details should not be assumed.

Documented hardware support

Resolution Games’ game description lists the following VR platforms:

  • Meta Quest 3
  • Meta Quest Pro
  • Pico Neo 3
  • Pico 4

Store availability and compatibility can change. Check the target headset’s current listing, especially if you are buying after the multiplayer retirement date. A listed headset is evidence that the developer advertised support; it is not a guarantee that every store version, account system or online feature remains active indefinitely.

Arcade Mode and the service change

The developer description mentions an Arcade Mode update, indicating that Ultimechs has content beyond its basic online arena premise. However, the service announcement is the decisive multiplayer fact. Resolution Games wrote in a Steam announcement reproduced by UploadVR: “We want to let our players know that we’ll soon be retiring online multiplayer support for Ultimechs and will transition the game to a single-player-only experience.”

The announcement also states: “You’ll still be able to jump into the arena and enjoy Ultimechs in single-player mode after multiplayer services end on October 20, 2026.” In practical terms, the game may continue as a solo experience, but the reason to buy it specifically for online matches disappears once that service change takes effect.

What Racket: Nx is

Racquetball, Breakout and a pinball-like arena

Racket: Nx is described on Steam as a combination of racquetball and Breakout inside a giant, pinball-like arena. The player uses a virtual racket to hit targets and keep the action moving around the enclosed space. That gives the game a different rhythm from Ultimechs: the emphasis is on ricochets, angles and target clearing rather than piloting a mech and punching a shared ball toward a goal.

The Steam listing identifies two online multiplayer formats:

  • Competitive PvP: play against another person in a head-to-head contest.
  • Online co-op: work with another player rather than competing against them.

The listing also includes Online PvP, Online Co-op and Cross-Platform Multiplayer among its features. Those labels document the intended feature set, but they do not prove that every possible platform pairing still works or that matchmaking is busy in every region.

Single-player options

Racket: Nx includes two listed solo formats. A campaign provides handcrafted levels, while an endless runner supplies an ongoing challenge. These modes matter for multiplayer buyers because they give you something to play when a friend is unavailable or when online services are quiet. They are also a more durable fallback than an online-only game, although the listing alone does not establish how much content each mode contains.

Name and storefront identity

The official site uses the name Racket:Next and describes it as descended from Racket: Nx. Storefront names and product identities can change. When searching, installing or inviting friends, use the exact title shown for your platform and confirm that the listing refers to the same current product rather than a similarly named release.

Multiplayer support compared

Question Ultimechs Racket: Nx
Online competitive play Online multiplayer exists before the announced October 20, 2026 retirement date. Steam lists online competitive PvP.
Online cooperative play The supplied game description does not specify a separate co-op mode. Steam lists online co-op.
Cross-platform multiplayer The supplied platform description does not document cross-platform pairings. Steam lists cross-platform multiplayer; exact pairings require verification.
After October 20, 2026 Resolution Games says the game will transition to single-player-only and be delisted on that date. No equivalent retirement announcement is identified in the available material.
Solo alternatives Single-player play is expected to remain after online services end; the announcement specifically says the arena will remain available. Handcrafted campaign and endless-runner modes are listed.
Core activity Pilot a mech and strike a ball with rocket-powered GauntJets toward the opposing goal. Use a racket in a giant pinball-like arena combining racquetball and Breakout.

The table shows why Racket: Nx wins the multiplayer decision on documented longevity and mode variety. It does not show that Racket: Nx has better servers, shorter queues or more players; those performance and population questions are not established by the listings.

Which game fits your multiplayer goal?

Pick Racket: Nx for both competition and cooperation

Racket: Nx is the more flexible choice if your group alternates between rivalry and teamwork. Its listing explicitly names PvP and co-op, so you do not have to choose a game that supports only one social format. The campaign and endless runner also give you solo activities when the group is offline.

Cross-platform multiplayer is another reason to start with Racket: Nx when friends use different hardware. Treat the feature as a starting point, not a universal promise: the Steam page does not identify every supported platform combination, and service status can change. Before buying multiple copies, confirm that the specific stores and headset versions your group uses are included.

Pick Ultimechs for its distinctive mech-sport premise before the cutoff

Ultimechs is the better thematic fit if the fantasy of piloting a mech and firing rocket-powered punches at a goal matters more to you than long-term online availability. Its arena concept is unusual, and the listed Quest, Pico and SteamVR support gives players several hardware routes.

  • 2X GRAPHICAL PROCESSING POWER — Enjoy lightning-fast load times and next-gen graphics for smooth gaming powered by the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 processor.

The timing is critical. Resolution Games’ announcement sets October 20, 2026 as the end of online multiplayer services. A purchase made shortly before that date could provide only a brief multiplayer window, and a purchase made afterward should be evaluated as a single-player game. Do not buy it as a lasting online team game without checking for a newer developer notice.

Pick neither on the basis of player-count claims

No current active-player figure, regional population report or matchmaking test is established here. A store page can list Online PvP while queues vary by time zone, platform and day. Conversely, a game can have a small but active group that is easy to join through friends. If queue health is your deciding factor, look for a current in-game test, a recent developer status update or direct reports from players in your region rather than assuming that either title has the larger community.

What the Ultimechs shutdown means for buyers

The announced timeline

  1. Before October 20, 2026: online multiplayer is the feature being retired, but the announcement describes the service as still operating until the stated date.
  2. On October 20, 2026: Resolution Games says online multiplayer services will end and the game will be delisted.
  3. After the service change: the announcement says players can still enter the arena in single-player mode.

This timeline is an announced event relative to the October 13, 2026 information date used for this comparison. It is not proof that every step occurred exactly as scheduled. If you are reading this on or after October 20, check the latest developer announcement and the relevant storefront instead of relying on the pre-shutdown description.

What delisting does and does not tell you

Delisting means a new buyer may no longer be able to obtain the game through the usual store, but delisting and service shutdown are separate questions. The announcement addresses both: it says the title will be delisted and that multiplayer services will end. It also promises continued single-player access. The practical result depends on your platform account, installation status and any platform-specific download rules, none of which are detailed in the announcement.

If you already own Ultimechs, keep your expectations narrow: the stated post-change experience is single-player. Do not assume that private rooms, matchmaking, leaderboards or invitations will continue unless a later update explicitly says so.

How to verify Racket: Nx cross-play before buying

  1. Identify each player’s exact platform. Record the headset, PC or console environment and the storefront edition, not just the headset brand.
  2. Open the current store page for each player. Confirm that the listing still shows Online PvP, Online Co-op and Cross-Platform Multiplayer where applicable.
  3. Check the game’s account and invitation flow. A cross-platform label does not explain whether friends connect through platform friends lists, an in-game account or room codes.
  4. Confirm the supported pairing. The Steam listing does not enumerate every platform combination. Verify your particular pairing before purchasing copies for a group.
  5. Test at a mutually convenient time. This will reveal whether your region and schedule produce a usable queue; a feature label alone cannot establish matchmaking reliability.

These checks are especially important for a group split across PC-based SteamVR and standalone headsets. Cross-platform support can exist while a specific edition, account requirement or regional service limitation prevents one proposed pairing.

Hardware and purchase checklist

For Ultimechs

  • Confirm that your headset or PC meets the currently published platform list: Quest 2, Quest 3, Quest Pro, Pico Neo 3, Pico 4 or SteamVR.
  • Check the store listing immediately before purchase because the announced delisting date is October 20, 2026.
  • Decide whether you would still want the game as a single-player arena experience if online services are unavailable.
  • For a group purchase, verify that everyone can play before the announced retirement rather than assuming the service will remain indefinitely.

For Racket: Nx

  • Use the current listing that matches your platform and confirm it is the same product associated with the Racket: Nx and Racket:Next naming.
  • Look for the listed Online PvP, Online Co-op and Cross-Platform Multiplayer features.
  • Confirm the specific cross-platform pairing for your group; the general label does not identify every supported combination.
  • Keep the campaign and endless runner in mind if you need solo content between multiplayer sessions.

A Meta Quest 3 is a plausible headset category for this comparison because the Ultimechs developer page lists Quest 3. That fact does not establish current store availability or prove that a particular Quest 3 setup runs every edition of Racket: Nx. Verify each game’s own listing before treating one headset as a guaranteed two-game solution.

How the play styles differ

Ultimechs: goal-focused team pressure

Ultimechs’ described loop is about moving a ball toward a goal with powered mech punches. That naturally creates team roles such as pressuring the opposing side, defending a goal or choosing when to strike, although the available description does not define formal positions or tactics. Expect the appeal to come from physical timing and arena movement rather than from a traditional racket-and-ball exchange.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Racket: Nx: angles, rebounds and target control

Racket: Nx’s racquetball-meets-Breakout structure centers on hitting objects around a pinball-like space. The campaign’s handcrafted levels suggest designed puzzles or target arrangements, while the endless runner suggests a continuously escalating solo format. In multiplayer, the documented choice between PvP and co-op lets you decide whether the same arena language should be competitive or collaborative.

Neither description establishes motion-comfort settings, exercise intensity, match duration or accessibility options. If those factors determine whether your group can play comfortably, inspect the current in-game and store documentation before purchasing.

Evidence limits you should keep in mind

  • Player population: no current active-player count is established for either game.
  • Matchmaking: no queue-time or success-rate test is available.
  • Latency: there is no measured regional latency comparison.
  • Cross-play details: Racket: Nx is labeled cross-platform on Steam, but the exact pairings are not listed in the available material.
  • Future availability: storefronts, hardware support and service policies can change, especially around Ultimechs’ announced October 20 retirement.

These limits do not make the comparison useless; they define what can be concluded responsibly. The documented feature set favors Racket: Nx for a continuing multiplayer purchase, while Ultimechs remains a distinctive but time-limited online option.

Final recommendation

For most readers asking which game is better for multiplayer, buy Racket: Nx. It documents both competitive PvP and online co-op, lists cross-platform multiplayer and includes substantial solo formats. Verify the platform pairing and current service status before inviting friends, but its published feature set aligns with a long-term multiplayer use case.

Choose Ultimechs only for its specific mech-arena fantasy and only after accepting the announced October 20, 2026 multiplayer retirement. After that date, treat it as a single-player title unless Resolution Games publishes a different update.
