Solar panels can cut the electricity you buy from the grid before any export payment arrives. Those are separate benefits: using your own generation can reduce imported electricity, while exported electricity earns money only after you qualify for an export tariff and the supplier has the readings it needs.

That distinction helps explain why some owners say their bills fell quickly but they are still waiting for export payments. It does not show how common solar regret or payment delays are: a recent Solar UK discussion is anecdotal, not a representative survey.

Why can bills fall before export payments start?

Solar panels generate electricity for the home to use. When generation meets household demand, the home needs to import less electricity from the grid. Exporting surplus electricity is a different transaction: it requires an eligible export arrangement and measured export readings.

In Great Britain, the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) is not paid automatically when panels are commissioned. A generator applies to a SEG licensee, meets its eligibility requirements and provides or enables access to export meter readings. Ofgem says, “SEG payments are calculated by using export meter readings.” Ofgem’s SEG overview explains the scheme.

An export MPAN identifies the export point. Ofgem’s generator guidance lists an export MPAN and appropriate metering among the eligibility requirements; a licensee does not have to accept a payment request until it has the readings needed to calculate payment. In a 2025 answer to Parliament, the government said SEG payments cannot be backdated to commissioning when exports could not be accurately measured until an export MPAN was in place. So electricity exported before the required measurement and account arrangements are ready should not be assumed to qualify for later payment.

The available sources do not establish a standard processing time for an export MPAN or supplier setup. If you are waiting, ask the installer, network operator or prospective SEG licensee which step is outstanding, who is responsible for it, and what evidence or readings are still needed.

What should you check if you’re waiting for export payments?

  1. Check whether the export point has an MPAN. Ask the installer or relevant network operator to confirm its status and provide the export MPAN when available.
  2. Confirm your metering can record exports. Ask how readings are collected and whether the SEG licensee can access them. The licensee needs usable export readings to calculate payment.
  3. Apply to an eligible SEG licensee. It does not have to be your electricity supplier. The licensee sets its rate, contract length and other terms; an eligible export tariff must pay more than zero.
  4. Check the contract and account status directly. Ask the licensee whether your application is complete, which readings it has received and when it expects to calculate payment. Do not assume an application alone means payments have begun.
  5. Keep the commissioning date and correspondence. These can help clarify what happened and which party is handling each step, but they do not establish a right to backdated SEG payments where exports were not accurately measurable.

Ofgem publishes a supplier list annually. Its list for 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027 includes mandatory and voluntary SEG licensees; it is not a ranking of the best current rates. Check rates and eligibility conditions with suppliers because terms can vary.

How much might you save?

There is no single saving that applies to every household. Energy Saving Trust says the estimate depends on self-consumption, export arrangements and location. Roof position, the household’s electricity use and whether a battery is included also affect how much generation is used at home rather than exported. Its guide puts a typical domestic system at around 4.5 kWp and around £7,600, using fuel prices as of July 2026. These are illustrative figures, not a quote for a particular property.

Energy Saving Trust’s example payback estimates with export payments, also using fuel prices as of July 2026, range from around 9 to 12 years across five listed locations: London, 9 years; Manchester, 10–11; Aberystwyth, 9–10; and Stirling, 11–12. The page does not yet include a Northern Ireland payback estimate. These scenarios are not guarantees for an individual installation. For a property-specific estimate, compare the system cost with expected generation, household use, export terms and location rather than relying on a national example. See Energy Saving Trust’s solar-panel guide.

A battery can change how much electricity a household uses itself or exports, but the cited evidence does not establish that adding one universally improves payback. Its cost and the household’s pattern of use matter.

Would you do it again? How to weigh the decision

“Any buyers remorse?” and “how much will I save?” are natural questions, but an individual owner’s experience cannot predict yours. The available discussion of MPAN waits and bill changes is a single self-selected online thread, not a representative measure of UK owners. No representative statistic establishes what share regret installing solar or how long export-payment setup typically takes.

In Ofgem’s SEG Year 5 Annual Report, published in 2025, aggregate scheme payments grew by approximately 86% to around £57 million, alongside 443 GWh of exports for the report’s year. Those scheme-wide totals show that SEG is making payments at scale; they are not a measure of typical household earnings or a forecast for a new system. Ofgem’s Year 5 report provides the scheme figures.

Buying a home with existing solar panels

Panels already on a roof do not by themselves tell you what you will own, what income may transfer, or whether the system is operating as expected. Energy Saving Trust reported almost 1.5 million home solar installations at the end of 2024 and recommends checking the system’s paperwork and condition when buying a property. Ask the seller for:

  • system size and details of any included battery;
  • the MCS certificate and ownership or transfer paperwork;
  • details and current status of any export contract;
  • details and current status of any legacy Feed-in Tariff (FIT) arrangement;
  • warranty documents and relevant insurance information.

Do not treat FIT and SEG as interchangeable: they are different arrangements. Verify which contract applies and whether export payments are actually being received before assuming an agreement will transfer or changing it. Consider an inspection by a solar specialist. Energy Saving Trust’s homebuyer guidance was published on 6 October 2026: what to check when buying a home with solar panels.

Does the same SEG advice apply across the UK?

The cited Ofgem guidance describes SEG as a Great Britain scheme. Do not assume its eligibility rules or process apply in Northern Ireland. Energy Saving Trust’s July 2026 payback examples also state that Northern Ireland is not yet included. Buyers in Northern Ireland should verify the arrangements relevant to their location with the installer and energy supplier.
