UK snow warning colours are not snowfall totals. The Met Office uses yellow, amber and red warnings to show a combination of the weather’s likely impact and the likelihood of that impact. A small amount of snow can produce a serious warning in one place, while heavier snow elsewhere may have a lower warning level. Always read the warning issued for your location and time, including its impact assessment and recommended actions.
What the UK snow-warning colours mean
The Met Office issues weather warnings through the National Severe Weather Warning Service (NSWWS). A warning can cover snow, ice, or both. Its colour is assigned using two questions: how serious the consequences could be, and how likely those consequences are to occur.
The system therefore does not set one universal depth of snow for yellow, amber or red. Forecast snow depth, timing and duration matter, but so do road conditions, exposure, power infrastructure, population, geography and the ability of local services to cope.

| Yellow | A range of impact-and-likelihood combinations, from moderate impacts that are highly likely to more significant impacts that are less certain. | Travel disruption, difficult driving or walking conditions, delays and local impacts. The exact effects depend on the individual warning. | Check the local details, consider how the weather could affect your household and make practical preparations to reduce disruption. |
| Amber | An increased likelihood of impacts that could significantly disrupt normal plans. | Possible travel delays, road or rail closures, power cuts and risk to life or property. | Consider changing weather-sensitive plans and take steps to protect yourself, other people and property. |
| Red | Dangerous weather is expected, with a very high likelihood of serious impacts. | Risk to life, substantial travel and energy disruption, and possible widespread damage to property and infrastructure. | Act immediately to keep yourself and others safe. Follow official advice and avoid unnecessary exposure to the conditions. |
These are broad categories, not guarantees about what every street will experience. The warning text for your area is the authoritative description of the expected hazards.

Why a warning colour is not a snow-depth threshold
Snow does not have the same effect everywhere. A snowfall that leaves rural roads impassable may cause less disruption in a city with treated roads, frequent public transport and buildings designed for winter conditions. Conversely, a relatively modest fall can be hazardous if it freezes, arrives during a commuting period or affects a location with steep roads and limited alternatives.
Forecasters assess the likely impact in its wider context rather than waiting for a fixed snowfall number. They consider factors such as:
- Whether snow is likely to settle and how quickly temperatures may fall.
- The timing of the event, including whether it coincides with school or work journeys.
- Ice formation, visibility, wind and other hazards occurring at the same time.
- Local vulnerability, including exposed communities, isolated properties and critical infrastructure.
- The expected effect on roads, railways, airports, electricity networks, communications and emergency access.
That is why two warnings with the same colour can describe noticeably different situations. Yellow and amber are deliberately broad: the colour alone does not tell you the precise risk level within that category.

How to read the warning for your location
Open the Met Office warning that covers your postcode or the place you need to travel to. Read the complete entry rather than relying on the colour shown on a map.
- Check the headline. Confirm whether the warning concerns snow, ice, or both, and note the start and end times.
- Check the affected area. Warning boundaries can exclude nearby places, so a warning for a neighbouring county is not automatically a warning for your address.
- Read “What to expect”. This section describes likely disruption and hazards in practical terms.
- Read “What should I do”. Use these actions as the starting point for decisions about travel, work, school, care and property.
- Read “Further details”. Look for timing, confidence, the weather elements involved and any important local qualifications.
- Inspect the impact-likelihood matrix. The matrix shows the assessed combination for the selected warning area. It is especially useful for understanding why a yellow or amber warning has been issued.
A map colour is only a prompt to investigate. Conditions can vary within one warning area, so use the written detail for the specific place and period that matters to you.
What does a yellow snow warning mean?
A yellow warning means there is a risk of weather-related disruption, but the range of possible outcomes is wide. One yellow warning may represent moderate impacts that are very likely; another may represent more serious impacts for which confidence is lower. You cannot determine which situation applies from the colour alone.

Practical steps for a yellow warning
- Check the warning’s timing against your planned journeys, appointments and caring responsibilities.
- Allow additional travel time and consider whether a route has a realistic alternative if roads or public transport are affected.
- Check travel operator information before leaving, then reassess if conditions worsen.
- Prepare essential items at home so a short disruption does not require an unnecessary trip.
- Check on people who may need help with heating, food, medication or transport, while avoiding putting yourself at risk.
- Keep entrances, steps and paths under observation for ice, particularly after snow melts and refreezes.
Yellow does not mean “no danger” or “only a light dusting”. It means you should understand the local scenario and take proportionate precautions.

Amber indicates that disruptive impacts are more likely than under a yellow warning. The Met Office lists possible travel delays, road and rail closures, power cuts and risk to life or property. The exact combination still depends on the individual warning, but plans that rely on normal transport or uninterrupted utilities deserve a deliberate review.
Before the warning starts
- Reconsider weather-sensitive journeys. Delay, cancel or move non-essential travel if the warning coincides with your departure or return.
- Contact organisations early. Ask employers, schools, clinics or event organisers whether arrangements have changed rather than assuming they will operate normally.
- Plan for a power interruption. Charge phones and essential devices, identify safe lighting and make sure anyone dependent on electrically powered medical equipment has an appropriate contingency plan.
- Protect vulnerable areas. Secure loose outdoor items, check pipes and entrances, and make sure heating systems and alarms are working.
- Plan for people and animals. Arrange safe access to medication, food and warm shelter without creating unnecessary journeys during the worst conditions.
During the warning
- Follow official travel and emergency-service advice; do not drive through closures or blocked routes.
- Keep away from unstable trees, damaged structures, floodwater and overhead electrical equipment.
- If you must travel, use the latest road and transport information, carry a charged phone and tell someone your route and expected arrival.
- Check on neighbours or relatives remotely where possible, and request assistance if someone is at immediate risk.
An amber warning is a prompt to change plans, not merely a suggestion to carry on with extra caution.
Rank #4
What does a red weather warning mean?
Red means dangerous weather is expected. The Met Office describes a very high likelihood of risk to life, substantial disruption to travel and energy supplies, and possible widespread damage to property and infrastructure.
How to respond to a red warning
- Act on official advice now. Follow instructions from emergency services, local authorities, transport operators and utility providers.
- Avoid unnecessary travel. Roads, railways and public transport may be closed or unsafe, and rescue access may be limited.
- Stay in a safe place. Remain indoors or use the shelter specified by authorities, away from windows and exposed structures where appropriate.
- Protect essential needs. Keep communication devices charged, retain access to medication and ensure everyone in the household knows the emergency plan.
- Do not take avoidable risks to inspect damage. Wait for an all-clear or professional guidance before going outside after the most severe conditions.
- Call emergency services only for genuine emergencies. This helps keep lines and crews available for life-threatening incidents.
A red warning is not a forecast of identical damage at every address. It is a warning that the expected conditions and their consequences are serious enough to require immediate protective action.
How warning likelihood and impact are combined
The NSWWS impact matrix places the assessed likelihood of impacts against their potential severity. A high-impact outcome with lower confidence can produce a warning, as can a moderate-impact outcome with high confidence. This approach explains why yellow and amber warnings cover several combinations rather than one fixed level of danger.

The matrix applies to the chosen warning area and event. It should not be used to compare colours from different storms as if they were measurements on a single scale. Read the accompanying text to understand what the assessment means locally.
Snow forecasts, confidence and changing warnings
UK snow is difficult to forecast confidently several weeks ahead. The Met Office says confidence typically increases within a few days of an event. Early outlooks can therefore change in timing, location, precipitation type or warning level as new observations and model forecasts arrive.
A warning’s lead time is not a promise that a particular snowfall total will occur. It indicates the period in which impacts are considered possible or expected at the time the warning was issued. Check for updates before travelling and again if conditions or plans change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteLikewise, the absence of a warning does not guarantee dry roads or safe conditions. Localised snow, freezing surfaces or rapidly changing temperatures can still create hazards outside a warning area or below the threshold for a warning.
Using the colours to make decisions
Use the colour as a triage signal, then use the warning details to decide what to do:
- Yellow: investigate the local effects and make proportionate preparations.
- Amber: assume disruption is more likely, change plans that depend on normal conditions and protect people and property.
- Red: treat the situation as dangerous, follow official instructions and take immediate steps to keep people safe.
This approach avoids two common errors: dismissing yellow as harmless and treating every yellow or amber warning as identical. The written warning, its impact matrix, affected area and time window provide the information needed for a sound decision.
