There is no single UK-wide seafood season calendar that applies to every fish and shellfish. Wild species spawn at different times, fishing conditions differ between regions, and a product’s sale date may be months after it was caught if it was frozen. Farmed seafood follows production cycles rather than the spawning calendar of wild fish. Use seasonality as a buying guide, then verify the species, origin and catch or farming method on the label.

The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) also warns that climate change is changing breeding seasons, so dates can move. The safest answer to “what seafood is in season now?” is therefore species-specific and location-specific, not a single list for the whole country.

What “in season” means for UK seafood

Fishing season is not the same as shop availability

A fishing season describes when a wild species is commonly caught, or when catching it is least likely to overlap with spawning. Retail availability describes what a fishmonger or supermarket can sell. Those are different things. Fish can be frozen soon after landing and sold later, so a frozen fillet available in October does not prove that the fish was caught in October. Imported products can also follow another country’s fishing calendar.

Wild and farmed seafood follow different calendars

Wild fish and shellfish have natural breeding cycles that vary by species and region. Farmed salmon, rainbow trout, mussels and other aquaculture products are managed through farming systems, so a wild spawning calendar should not be applied to them. A label identifying a farmed product is essential context when you are judging seasonality.

Regional differences matter

Waters around Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland do not produce identical catches at the same time. Even within one coast, weather, local stock conditions, gear and management rules can change what is landed. A “UK season” can therefore be a useful broad indication, but it cannot replace a current fishery-specific check.

A practical month-by-month guide you can use safely

The table below separates what is established from what is not. It does not invent a national species list: the readable evidence supports one specific seasonal caution for haddock, while the Scottish calendar’s species bars cannot be reliably recovered as text. For any month without a species-specific entry, ask the seller for the current area and method rather than treating the month as proof of sustainability.

Month Evidence-based guidance What to do when buying
January No universal UK species assignment is established here. Wild availability depends on species, region and gear; farmed products follow farm production. Check whether the product is wild or farmed, the catch or farming location, and whether it was fresh or frozen.
February No single UK-wide calendar applies. A local fishery may have a different peak or restriction from another region. Use a current fishery rating or ask the fishmonger which fishery supplied the product.
March MCS identifies March as part of the main breeding season for haddock. Avoid fresh haddock during March unless you have a specific reason and verified sourcing; if buying haddock, choose fish larger than 30 cm to reduce pressure on juvenile fish.
April The MCS haddock caution continues through April. This is species-specific advice, not a general UK closed season. Apply the same size and freshness checks to haddock, and do not assume the advice automatically covers cod, hake or other species.
May No complete UK-wide species list can be stated reliably from the available evidence. Ask whether the stated “season” means prime fishing, broad availability or simply stock held in retail.
June Availability can vary between coasts and between wild and farmed products. Prefer a label that names the species and precise catch or farming area; treat “local” alone as insufficient.
July There is no single national designation for every fish and shellfish in this month. For shellfish, ask how they were gathered or landed, because method affects environmental impact as well as timing.
August Seasonality remains fishery-specific. A fresh counter display does not prove that the catch is locally or currently in season. Confirm whether the product was caught in UK waters, farmed in the UK or imported, and whether it was previously frozen.
September No evidence supports assigning every UK species a single September season. Use a species-and-fishery rating rather than a month-only rule.
October “What fish is in season in October?” has no one UK answer. Scottish guidance has October entries in its visual calendar, but the month-to-species bars cannot be reliably read from the published text extraction. Request the exact species, Scottish or other regional origin, and method. Do not convert the Scottish visual into a UK-wide list.
November Wild catches and farmed supply continue to follow different patterns; no universal UK list is established. Check whether “fresh” means never frozen and whether the fishery is rated for the stated gear and area.
December Seasonal demand can increase retail choice, but demand is not evidence of a sustainable or in-season catch. Buy by verified species, origin and method, not by festive availability alone.

This deliberately cautious calendar is more reliable than assigning unsupported months to species. For a genuine local-season answer, the seller should be able to identify the fishery or farm, not just the country.

The clearest species-specific example: haddock

MCS advises avoiding fresh haddock during the main breeding season in March and April. It also recommends choosing haddock longer than 30 cm, because larger fish are less likely to be juveniles. This guidance is intended to reduce pressure on young fish and protect spawning stocks.

It is not a legal UK-wide closed season, and it does not mean every haddock product sold in March or April was caught during spawning. Frozen fish may have been landed earlier, and an imported or separately managed fishery may have different timing. Ask whether the fish is fresh or previously frozen and where it was caught before applying the advice.

Examples of lower-profile UK seafood choices

MCS encourages shoppers to diversify beyond the five products that dominate UK consumption. It says cod, haddock, salmon, tuna and prawns account for 80% of seafood eaten in the UK, while about 70% of seafood caught in the UK is exported to mainland Europe or farther abroad. Choosing a less familiar local species can widen demand, but only when its fishery or farm is acceptable.

  • Shetland brown crab: MCS gives pot- or creel-caught crab as a regional example.
  • Dee Estuary cockles: Hand-gathering is the specified method in the example.
  • Cornish hake: The example is hake caught by fixed net.
  • Lyme Bay king scallops: MCS identifies hand-dived scallops.
  • UK farmed mussels: Farmed mussels illustrate an aquaculture option that should be assessed by farming method rather than a wild spawning calendar.

These are examples of how location and method add useful information; they are not a ranked national “best seafood” list and should not be treated as automatically sustainable in every fishery.

How to read a seafood label

For unprocessed seafood, MCS says labels are legally required to state the species and the catch or farming location. The farming method is an exception to that information requirement, so you may need to ask the seller for it. Before buying, work through these checks:

  1. Identify the species. “White fish” or “shellfish” is not enough to assess seasonality.
  2. Identify the production type. Confirm whether it is wild-caught or farmed.
  3. Find the location. Look for the catch area or farming country and, where available, a more specific region.
  4. Find the method. Ask about gear such as pot, creel, fixed net, dredge, hand-gathering or hand-diving for wild seafood, and the production system for farmed seafood.
  5. Clarify freshness. “Fresh” describes retail condition; it does not necessarily mean caught recently. Ask whether the product was previously frozen.
  6. Check a fishery-specific rating. A species name alone cannot settle sustainability because the same species can come from fisheries with different impacts.

Words such as “local,” “fresh,” “wild” and “sustainably sourced” are useful descriptions but are not, on their own, proof of a sustainable choice.

Seasonality and sustainability are related, but not identical

Why the catch method changes the answer

Two products carrying the same species name can have different environmental impacts because of where and how they were produced. A pot-caught crab, a hand-gathered cockle and a trawled product should not be treated as equivalent merely because each is local. Gear, habitat interaction, bycatch and management all belong in the decision.

Which labels can help

MCS identifies the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) label for wild-caught seafood. For farmed products, it points to the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC), Soil Association or Organic certification. These labels address different production systems; MSC certification is for wild catch, not farmed fish.

Use the Good Fish Guide correctly

MCS describes its Good Fish Guide as a free resource that rates fisheries and aquaculture. Ratings are tied to a specific fishery or farming method, so search using the full combination of species, area and method. The Good Fish Guide is produced by the Marine Conservation Society and is distinct from the Marine Stewardship Council, whose certification mark appears on qualifying wild-caught products.

Wild, farmed, fresh and frozen: four decisions that are often confused

Question Why it matters What to ask
Wild or farmed? Wild spawning seasons do not describe farm production cycles. “Is this wild-caught or farmed, and where?”
Fresh or frozen? Retail timing may be far later than the landing date. “Has it been frozen, and when was it landed?”
Which region? Species breeding and fishing patterns vary geographically. “What catch area or farm supplied it?”
Which method? Gear and farming systems affect habitat and bycatch impacts. “What gear or farming method was used?”

Using the Scottish seasonal calendar without overclaiming

Seafood from Scotland publishes a calendar with three categories: “Widely available,” “Variable availability” and “Prime Fishing Season.” It covers haddock, cod, saithe, whiting, hake, monkfish, plaice, lemon sole, witch sole, megrim, herring, mackerel, farmed salmon, farmed rainbow trout, brown and velvet crab, langoustine, lobster, mussels, scallops, Pacific oyster, razor clams and squid.

The calendar is Scottish rather than a complete UK guide. Its visual bars are not reliably recoverable from the available machine-readable text, so assigning a particular species to a particular month would risk inventing information. Use the published visual directly when you need Scotland-specific planning, and treat its category labels as availability guidance rather than legal seasons.

Practical swaps when your usual choice is poorly timed

MCS suggests several swaps, but these are sourcing suggestions rather than universal month claims:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Choose UK rope-grown mussels instead of warm-water king or tiger prawns when the relevant sourcing and method checks are satisfactory.
  • Consider rainbow trout farmed in UK freshwater ponds as an alternative to salmon.
  • Consider North Sea plaice as an alternative to haddock, checking the specific fishery rating and method.

MCS says this swap advice was correct as of April 2026. Conditions and ratings can change, so verify the current fishery or farm before relying on a previous recommendation.

A repeatable shopping routine

  1. Start with the species you want. If it is haddock in March or April, apply the specific MCS caution and size advice.
  2. Decide whether seasonality is your priority. If you need a currently landed local catch, say so; if frozen or farmed seafood is acceptable, the calendar question changes.
  3. Read the full label. Record species, catch or farming location, wild or farmed status, and method.
  4. Check the current rating. Use the Good Fish Guide or a relevant certification, matching the exact fishery or farm rather than stopping at the species name.
  5. Ask one clarifying question. “Was this caught recently, or was it frozen?” resolves the most common confusion between season and availability.
  6. Choose an alternative if information is missing. A product with transparent origin and method is easier to assess than one marketed only as “local” or “sustainable.”

Where to get a fuller current reference

Seafish describes its Seafood Guide as a 64-page guide covering species availability and seasonality. It says printed copies are currently unavailable and that it hopes to offer a new printed version toward the end of 2026. Until then, use current online guidance and ask the seller for fishery-level details rather than relying on an old wall calendar.

Because MCS says climate change is affecting breeding seasons, any calendar should be treated as a living reference. Recheck guidance when planning a purchase months ahead, especially for wild seafood and for a named local fishery.
