The UK Space Agency has selected ClearSpace UK as prime contractor for a five-year, £61,341,564 mission to remove two defunct UK-registered satellites from low Earth orbit. The award, announced on 15 October 2026, is often rounded to “$80 million,” but the authoritative contract value is in pounds. Launch and debris-removal operations are targeted for 2029.
What the UK awarded
ClearSpace Today Limited is listed as the supplier in the UK public procurement record. The contract was awarded on 28 September 2026, runs for five years and is scheduled to expire on 27 September 2031. ClearSpace UK will lead the mission’s design, development and delivery.
| Contract detail | Authoritative figure |
|---|---|
| Prime contractor | ClearSpace UK (supplier listed as ClearSpace Today Limited) |
| Contract value | £61,341,564 in the procurement record; ClearSpace announced the figure as £61 million |
| Award date | 28 September 2026 |
| Contract duration | Five years |
| Scheduled expiry | 27 September 2031 |
| Targets | Two defunct UK-registered satellites in low Earth orbit |
The headline amount of $80 million is therefore a rounded currency conversion, not the denomination recorded in the UK award. No exchange rate or exact-dollar contract value was provided.

How the dual-satellite deorbit mission is intended to work
The targets were not built to be repaired or captured. That makes the mission substantially more difficult than docking with a cooperative spacecraft: the servicer must identify an uncontrolled object, approach it safely and take command of a satellite whose shape, attitude and remaining hardware may complicate capture.

- HOBBY MODEL KIT – Unassembled model packed in an envelope with easy to follow instructions. Ideal for ages 14 and up.
- NO GLUE OR SOLDER NEEDED – Parts can be easily clipped from the metal sheets. Tweezers are the recommended tool for bending and twisting the connection tabs.
- VOYAGER – 1.5 Sheet Model with a moderate difficulty level. Assembled Size: 1.38 x 1.77 x 6.70 inches.
- FROM STEEL SHEETS TO 3D – Pop out the pieces and connect using tabs and holes. Includes illustrated instructions.
- HIGHLY DETAILED ETCHED MODEL – Display your 3D model once completed - collect and build them all.
- Rendezvous and navigation: The servicer will use autonomous guidance, navigation and control to close in on each dead satellite while managing relative position and velocity.
- Robotic capture: The spacecraft will use large robotic “claws” to grasp an object that has no servicing fixtures. ClearSpace says the next engineering step is to design, build and test a vehicle capable of approaching and controlling such an object safely.
- Orbit lowering: After capture, the combined spacecraft and satellite will be maneuvered into an atmospheric re-entry trajectory.
- Controlled disposal: The objects are intended to burn up during atmospheric re-entry rather than remain as additional orbital debris.
- Second removal: The mission is designed to repeat the process for a second satellite. UK government material describes it as the first mission intended to dispose of more than one satellite in this way.
The project is a technology demonstration as well as a cleanup operation. It must prove autonomous rendezvous, proximity operations and robotic capture against unprepared targets, followed by safe disposal.
When will the UK ADR mission launch?
The mission is planned for launch in 2029 from Saxavord Spaceport in Scotland. Active debris-removal operations are also targeted for 2029, although the final launch date and operating schedule remain subject to mission readiness and launch planning. The 2031 contract expiry provides time for development, testing and mission execution, but it is not a guarantee that every milestone will occur on a fixed date.

Why the UK is paying to remove space debris
Orbital debris can threaten the satellites that provide navigation, weather forecasting, communications and national-security services. The UK Space Agency’s July 2025 tender estimated about 140 million debris fragments smaller than 1 centimetre and more than 54,000 tracked objects larger than 10 centimetres orbiting Earth. Even small fragments can damage or disable spacecraft at orbital speeds, while larger derelict satellites create collision risks and can generate still more debris.

ClearSpace is expected to work with partners across the UK supply chain, allowing the contract to develop spacecraft, robotics, navigation and mission-operations expertise that could support future commercial or government servicing missions.

UK Space Minister Liz Lloyd called debris “an immense and growing challenge” and said the UK intends to lead international cleanup efforts. UK Space Agency Co-Director Dr Alice Bunn said the mission is also about developing capabilities for future servicing, assembly and manufacturing in orbit. The government says the UK space sector is worth £18.6 billion and supports more than 55,000 skilled jobs, figures stated in its 15 October 2026 announcement.
What is—and is not—known about the two targets
Public material identifies the targets only as two non-functioning, UK-registered or UK-licensed satellites in low Earth orbit. No authoritative information released with the award names the spacecraft or supplies their orbital elements. Their identities, inclinations, altitudes and current attitudes therefore should not be inferred from the contract announcement.

That missing detail matters operationally. The servicer’s final approach profile, capture strategy, propulsion needs and re-entry plan depend on each target’s orbit and physical condition. Those parameters are normally finalized through mission design and detailed target characterization.

How the 2026 award differs from the earlier tender
The UK Space Agency’s July 2025 tender described a proposed two-satellite removal mission with an estimated value of £75.6 million. The later procurement record records an awarded value of £61,341,564. These are different stages and figures, not two values for the same completed award.

|---|---|
| July 2025 tender | £75.6 million proposed value for a spacecraft to capture two non-functioning UK-licensed satellites and guide them into the atmosphere |
| September 2026 award | £61,341,564 awarded to ClearSpace Today Limited for the five-year UK ADR prime contract |
What success would demonstrate
- Autonomous guidance and navigation around a non-cooperative, unprepared object.
- Robotic capture of a satellite that was never designed for servicing.
- Safe control of the captured mass during orbit-lowering maneuvers.
- Repeatable removal of two separate objects in one mission.
- End-to-end UK capability spanning spacecraft development, robotics, operations and controlled atmospheric disposal.
ClearSpace UK Managing Director Rob Atchison described the immediate engineering challenge as designing, building and testing a spacecraft that can safely approach and take control of an object never intended to be caught. If the mission meets its 2029 objectives, the UK will have demonstrated a government-backed pathway from debris identification to physical removal, while creating flight experience relevant to later ISAM missions.
