For a home archive, encrypted folders may be sufficient; for theft protection, regulated data, or application-heavy use, the DXP2800 GT’s missing volume encryption is a serious limitation. UGOS Pro can encrypt individual folders, but Notebookcheck reported on October 15, 2026, that full drive or volume encryption was still unavailable. That distinction determines whether data remains readable after someone removes the NAS drives and examines them elsewhere.
What the missing feature means
Volume encryption protects an entire storage volume. When the volume is locked and its key has not also been compromised, someone who steals the NAS or removes its drives should not be able to read the stored data on another system.
The DXP2800 GT instead offers folder-level encryption in UGOS Pro. You choose which folders are protected, while the rest of the volume remains outside that encryption boundary. Notebookcheck’s October 15, 2026 analysis specifically states that the system still lacks volume encryption even though individual folders can now be encrypted.
This is an at-rest security issue, not a networking-speed or RAID issue. An attacker who already has an account and is accessing the NAS normally presents a different problem from someone with the physical drives in hand.

Folder encryption versus volume encryption
| Question | Encrypted folders | Whole-volume encryption |
|---|---|---|
| What is covered? | Only the folders you select and the data written inside them. | The entire storage volume, including data users may not realize an application created. |
| Main threat addressed | Unauthorized access to selected confidential files through the NAS. | Offline reading after theft, drive removal, resale, or examination on another computer. |
| Operational burden | High: every sensitive file and application path must stay inside protected folders. | Lower for coverage because the encryption boundary surrounds the volume. |
| Application compatibility risk | Applications can place thumbnails, temporary files, indexes, or databases elsewhere. | Those artifacts remain inside the encrypted volume. |
| Key and recovery responsibility | You still need a separate, recoverable key or passphrase for each protected area. | You need a volume key and a plan for unlocking the volume after reboot or recovery. |
Why applications make folder-only protection difficult
Modern NAS workloads rarely consist only of documents that a user manually saves. Photo catalogues generate thumbnails and indexes; sync services create databases and conflict files; containers and virtual machines write configuration, cache, and temporary data; media services maintain metadata. If those paths are outside the encrypted folders, sensitive remnants can remain readable even when the original files are protected.
That makes folder encryption a discipline problem. You must know where each application stores its data, configure it to use an encrypted location, and check after updates that it has not created a new default path. A single overlooked database or thumbnail directory can reveal filenames, previews, account information, or other content.

Who should treat the omission as a blocker?
Businesses and regulated-data holders
If a policy, contract, or regulator requires every storage block to be encrypted at rest, selected folders do not demonstrate that requirement. The DXP2800 GT should not be your primary repository unless the vendor provides whole-volume encryption in the exact UGOS Pro release you will deploy, or you add an independently encrypted storage workflow.
Shared household or office systems
Multiple users and changing application settings make it harder to guarantee that confidential material never leaves protected folders. Whole-volume encryption provides a more reliable boundary when you cannot audit every user and service.

Application-heavy installations
Databases, synchronization tools, photo indexes, containers, and virtual machines are poor fits for a folder-only policy unless you can deliberately place all of their writable data inside encrypted locations and verify that configuration over time.
High physical-theft risk
If the NAS or its drives could be stolen, removed for resale, or inspected offline, the missing volume layer directly affects your threat model. Folder encryption does not automatically protect unencrypted directories, swap-like data, temporary files, or application artifacts.

When encrypted folders can be adequate
A disciplined home user may reasonably use the DXP2800 GT when the main goal is protecting a known set of documents from ordinary NAS access rather than defending against drive theft. This is most defensible when:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- All confidential files are deliberately stored in encrypted folders.
- Few applications write data, and their storage locations are known.
- Every application that handles sensitive material is configured to use protected paths.
- You can keep encryption keys or passphrases separate from the NAS and still recover them.
- You accept that an overlooked path can remain unencrypted.
This is a risk decision, not proof that folder encryption provides the same coverage as volume encryption.

A practical setup and verification checklist
- Define the physical threat. Decide whether an attacker could obtain the NAS, remove a SATA drive, or connect a drive to another system. If the answer is yes, whole-volume encryption should be your baseline requirement.
- Inventory data and services. List confidential shares, photo and media indexes, sync databases, container volumes, virtual-machine disks, caches, and temporary directories.
- Place sensitive paths inside encrypted folders. Configure each service to use those locations rather than relying on its default directory. Do not assume that moving the original files also moves generated metadata.
- Test the lock and unlock process. Restart the NAS, unlock the protected folders, and confirm that applications recover correctly. Test a restore on a spare system if your workflow depends on the data being available after a failure.
- Separate the keys. Do not store the only key or passphrase on the NAS. Keep a protected recovery copy that authorized people can access when the device is unavailable.
- Inspect for leakage. Review application directories and backups for thumbnails, logs, indexes, temporary files, or databases created outside the encrypted locations.
- Maintain an encrypted independent backup. A second encrypted copy reduces the impact of theft, corruption, or an unlock failure.
What the DXP2800 GT hardware does—and does not—change
The DXP2800 GT remains a capable two-bay NAS for users whose security requirements fit UGOS Pro’s current controls. Tom’s Guide listed this configuration on August 3, 2026:
| Component | Published specification |
|---|---|
| Processor | AMD Ryzen Embedded R2514 |
| Memory | 8 GB DDR4, expandable to 64 GB |
| System storage | 64 GB eMMC |
| Drive bays | Two 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch SATA bays |
| M.2 storage | Two M.2 slots |
| Storage modes | JBOD, Basic, RAID 0, and RAID 1 |
| Networking and display | One 10GbE port and HDMI output |
| Warranty | Two years |
Adding SATA drives or M.2 NVMe SSDs changes capacity or performance, not the encryption boundary. RAID 1 can keep the NAS running after one drive fails, but it does not encrypt data and is not an independent backup.
Decision guide
- Choose the DXP2800 GT: your use is primarily a home archive, you value 10GbE and two-bay RAID 1, and you can enforce a careful folder-and-application policy.
- Use it only with an additional encrypted workflow: you need stronger offline protection but can keep the NAS for less-sensitive workloads and store sensitive data in an independently encrypted backup or second system.
- Look for another platform: every block must be encrypted, compliance demands whole-volume protection, or your services cannot be constrained to known folders.
UGREEN’s product page describes UGOS Pro security and encryption protocols in general terms; those statements should not be interpreted as confirmation of full-volume encryption. Check the exact software release and documentation before purchase, because a future update could change the feature set.
