Yes, if you are buying new and expect to run demanding apps, virtual machines, containers, or multi-user creative workloads. The DXP8800 Ultra adds a newer processor platform and a higher reported memory ceiling, but it does not add more drive bays than the DXP8800 Plus. For a Plus owner whose system is working well—or a buyer who mainly needs file sharing and backups—the upgrade is difficult to justify without a specific compute or memory limitation.
What is the DXP8800 Ultra?
The DXP8800 Ultra is an eight-bay, diskless NAS. UGREEN’s US product page, accessed in 2026, lists an Intel Core 7 150U processor, 8GB of DDR5-4800 memory, eight SATA bays, two M.2 NVMe slots, and two 10GbE network ports. UGREEN states a maximum capacity of 272TB. That figure is the manufacturer’s stated maximum, not a guarantee that every drive configuration or use case will reach it.
The enclosure is sold without drives, so its purchase price is only one part of the cost of a working NAS. UGREEN says it generally supports third-party drives, gives Western Digital, Seagate, and Toshiba as examples, and directs buyers to its compatibility list. Check that list for the exact drive model before buying; support for a manufacturer does not establish compatibility for every model.

The main distinction is compute and memory headroom, not storage capacity. NAS Compares and WunderTech describe the two models as having the same eight-bay layout and two user-accessible M.2 slots, with broadly similar high-speed connectivity. Their comparison reporting identifies the Plus’s processor as an Intel Core i5-1235U and the Ultra’s as an Intel Core 7 150U. They report maximum memory capacities of 64GB for the Plus and 96GB for the Ultra.

The Plus-specific specifications and the reported memory ceilings come from secondary comparison sources; UGREEN’s full Plus product page was not available for confirmation. UGREEN’s homepage snapshot showed a $572 difference between the displayed prices above, while the DXP8800 Ultra product page showed $1,779.99. These are dated US storefront displays, not current guaranteed prices or a settled comparison of like-for-like offers. Sale terms, region, and stock can change the gap.
Does the Ultra perform better?
The newer processor and higher reported memory ceiling give the Ultra more room for workloads that place sustained demands on compute or RAM. NAS Compares identifies Docker stacks, databases, multiple users, indexing, encryption, surveillance, thumbnail generation, remote-access services, and light virtualization as workloads where the Ultra’s higher ceiling may matter. That is a rationale based on the platform specifications, not proof of a particular speed increase.

There is no controlled, same-configuration Ultra-versus-Plus benchmark in the available reviews. NAS Compares did not provide a PassMark score, and a percentage performance claim would therefore be unsupported.

WunderTech says UGREEN supplied its review unit and describes testing the Ultra with eight drives, without SSD cache. The reviewer reports editing directly from the NAS and finding a large-file copy over 10GbE practically even with a 12-bay DIY system also under test. This is useful evidence that the Ultra can support a demanding 10GbE media workflow in that reviewer’s setup; it does not predict results for a different drive array, network, client, file size, or editing application.

Vortez’s September 4, 2026 review, which identifies UGREEN as the manufacturer and sponsor, praises the hardware and connectivity while assessing UGOS Pro’s app catalogue as smaller than those of Synology and QNAP. Treat that as the reviewer’s qualitative assessment, not a verified count of available applications.
Who should choose the DXP8800 Ultra?
New buyers running apps, VMs, or several services
The Ultra is the more compelling choice if you plan to run containers, virtual machines, databases, indexing, surveillance, or several services alongside file storage. The reported 96GB ceiling gives more expansion room than the Plus’s reported 64GB limit. That does not mean every buyer should install the maximum; size memory to the applications and number of users you actually expect.

Creators and teams using 10GbE
The Ultra’s two 10GbE ports, Thunderbolt 4, SD reader, HDMI, and PCIe expansion make it a well-connected option for creative workflows. The ports alone do not ensure fast transfers: performance also depends on the drives, array layout, client device, network equipment, and application. Include any networking upgrades needed to use 10GbE in the total system budget.

If the NAS will mostly store files, share them across a household or small team, and hold backups, the Plus may be the better value when its live price is meaningfully lower. In that use case, the Ultra’s extra compute and memory headroom may be less useful than putting the difference toward drives or backup capacity.

Current DXP8800 Plus owners
A working Plus does not automatically need replacing. Upgrade only if you can identify a CPU or memory ceiling that is limiting the workload you want to run. If the system already handles your storage and services, the Ultra’s higher specification alone is not a practical reason to switch.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to decide whether the price premium is worthwhile
- Check current prices in your region. Compare live offers for both models rather than relying on a dated storefront snapshot or a historical $270 comparison.
- Budget the complete system. Add the cost of the drives you need, backup capacity, and any 10GbE networking equipment required for your clients.
- List your planned workloads. File sharing and backups place a different value on extra compute than containers, virtual machines, indexing, or several simultaneous users.
- Estimate memory needs. The Ultra’s reported 96GB ceiling is relevant if your applications may exceed the Plus’s reported 64GB ceiling; it is not a reason by itself to buy or populate the maximum.
- Check software fit and drive compatibility. Confirm that UGOS Pro supports the applications you need and check UGREEN’s current compatibility list for each exact drive model.
Verdict
The DXP8800 Ultra is a meaningful headroom upgrade, not a new eight-bay storage platform. It makes the strongest case for a new buyer with compute-heavy plans or a need for more memory expansion room. A Plus owner without a concrete limitation, or a buyer seeking mainly dependable storage and backups, should compare the live price gap against the value of additional drives and backup capacity before paying more.
