Choose the UGREEN DXP4800 Plus if you can use its 10GbE connection, want the higher listed memory ceiling, or expect heavier multitasking. Choose the TerraMaster F4-424 if dual 2.5GbE is enough and it is substantially cheaper or easier to obtain where you live. Neither is a universal winner. Both are four-bay, diskless-style SATA NAS enclosures, so the drives, network equipment, software requirements and workload will determine the better purchase.

The short answer

The most important difference is networking. The DXP4800 Plus has one 10GbE RJ45 port plus one 2.5GbE port. The F4-424 has two 2.5GbE ports and no 10GbE port in its published specification. A 10GbE socket is valuable only if your computer, switch, cabling and storage workload can use it; otherwise, the TerraMaster’s dual 2.5GbE design may deliver everything your network needs.

UGREEN also lists an Intel Pentium Gold 8505 and support for up to 64GB of RAM, while TerraMaster lists an Intel N95 and up to 32GB of DDR5 memory in its single SODIMM slot. Those specifications suggest more expansion and potential multitasking headroom for the UGREEN, but the available evidence does not include a matched benchmark. Do not treat the CPU names as a measured performance percentage.

TerraMaster’s strongest case is value and straightforward capacity: its official specification supports four SATA drives, two M.2 NVMe slots and up to 88TB of raw capacity with four 22TB drives. The DXP4800 Plus also has four SATA bays and two M.2 slots, but the gathered product information does not state an equivalent maximum raw-capacity figure.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Think of the decision as a network-and-workload choice rather than a simple brand contest. A household that backs up laptops overnight may never saturate 2.5GbE, while a small creative team moving large project folders can quickly justify 10GbE. Likewise, 32GB can be generous for file serving but restrictive for several virtual machines. Start with those requirements, then use the hardware table and total-cost check below.

Hardware comparison

Specification UGREEN DXP4800 Plus TerraMaster F4-424
Drive bays Four SATA bays Four SATA bays
Processor Intel Pentium Gold 8505 Intel N95
Maximum listed memory Up to 64GB Up to 32GB DDR5 SODIMM
Memory layout Expandable RAM; the listing does not specify a single-slot limit One memory slot
System storage 128GB SSD system disk Not stated in the cited product specification
M.2 slots Two Two NVMe
Network ports One 10GbE RJ45 and one 2.5GbE RJ45 Two 2.5GbE
Listed RAID modes JBOD, Basic, RAID 0, 1, 5, 6 and 10 The product page notes that usable capacity varies by RAID type; confirm the exact array options before purchase
Internal file systems Not stated in the cited product listing Btrfs and EXT4
Operating system UGOS Pro Linux-based TOS
Maximum listed raw capacity Not stated in the cited product listing Up to 88TB raw with four 22TB drives

Both models are enclosures rather than complete storage systems. You must buy compatible SATA hard drives or SSDs separately, and you should check each manufacturer’s current compatibility list before ordering. M.2 slots can provide NVMe storage or caching functions supported by the respective operating system, but the cited specifications do not establish identical M.2 behavior or expansion rules.

The 128GB SSD system disk listed for the UGREEN is a notable distinction in the published specifications, but it should not be interpreted as 128GB of user storage for backups. Ask how the operating system allocates that device and whether it can be replaced or used for applications. TerraMaster’s listing does not state an equivalent system-disk arrangement, so confirm what is included before comparing like for like.

Networking: 10GbE versus dual 2.5GbE

When the UGREEN port matters

The DXP4800 Plus is the only one of these two models with a listed 10GbE port. That can reduce transfer time for large video projects, photo libraries, virtual-machine images or multiple simultaneous clients when the NAS is connected to a 10GbE switch and the client also has 10GbE connectivity. Fast SSD storage and an array capable of sustaining the link are also required; a single slow hard drive will not automatically deliver 10Gbps.

If your current router, switch and computers are limited to 1GbE or 2.5GbE, the extra port is an upgrade option rather than an immediate benefit. Budget for a compatible switch, network adapters and suitable cabling if you are buying the UGREEN specifically for 10GbE.

Check the whole path, not just the NAS label. A workstation needs a matching 10GbE adapter, the switch must provide the appropriate port, and the storage pool must be fast enough to keep data flowing. Wi-Fi clients generally will not approach wired 10GbE rates. If only one editing workstation needs the faster link, a direct or appropriately switched connection may be sufficient; do not pay for an enterprise-style switch unless your layout requires it.

Why two 2.5GbE ports may be enough

The F4-424’s dual 2.5GbE ports suit a home or small office that already uses 2.5GbE equipment. Two ports can support separate clients or network configurations, but the exact benefits depend on the operating system’s link-aggregation and network-management support. Do not assume that combining ports automatically doubles one computer’s transfer speed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For routine backups, document storage, photo access and one or two simultaneous 4K streams, network traffic may be limited by the client devices, Wi-Fi, drive speed or media-transcoding requirements rather than the port count.

Ask whether you need redundancy, additional client paths or aggregate traffic from several users. Those are different goals from making one file copy faster. Verify that TOS supports the network arrangement you intend, and make the same check for UGOS Pro if you plan to use both ports. The product pages identify the ports but do not document every link-aggregation mode.

CPU and memory: what the specifications do and do not prove

Pentium Gold 8505 in the DXP4800 Plus

UGREEN lists the Pentium Gold 8505 and a maximum of 64GB of expandable RAM. That combination gives the DXP4800 Plus a higher stated ceiling for containers, indexing, background jobs and other memory-heavy services. It is a specification advantage, not a promise that every application will run faster.

Extra memory is useful only when the operating system and applications can address it. Before buying modules, check the supported memory type, capacity, and installation procedure for the exact revision. A high ceiling also increases the purchase cost if you install more RAM immediately, so include that upgrade in your budget rather than treating 64GB as free capacity.

Intel N95 in the F4-424

TerraMaster lists the Intel N95 with 8GB of DDR5 non-ECC SODIMM memory installed, one memory slot and support for up to 32GB. That is sufficient for many file-serving and backup deployments, particularly when the NAS is not running numerous additional services.

The single-slot design means planning matters: replacing the installed module may be the upgrade path, and there is less flexibility than a system with multiple slots. Confirm the module specification and whether the vendor permits user replacement without affecting support.

How to choose for applications

List the services you actually intend to run: backup clients, media indexing, databases, containers, virtual machines, surveillance recording and remote-access tools all consume different amounts of CPU and memory. Then check whether the current UGOS Pro or TOS versions support those services. The available product information identifies both operating systems but does not establish a current, version-matched comparison of application catalogs, update cadence, security history or support lifetime.

For a basic backup target, prioritize drive reliability, backup scheduling and recovery procedures over a larger CPU. For a development box, identify the number of containers or virtual machines, their memory allocations and whether they must run continuously. Leave headroom for updates and indexing; a system that is adequate on day one can become constrained as services and users accumulate.

Storage layout and RAID decisions

Four bays and two M.2 slots on both models

Each enclosure accepts four SATA drives. You can build a large-capacity hard-drive array, a smaller SSD array or a mixed deployment where the M.2 devices serve a supported cache or fast-storage role. Confirm whether a planned M.2 configuration is supported for your intended use; the two product pages do not document identical caching, pool or tiering behavior.

Four bays give you room to start with fewer drives and add capacity later only if the operating system supports expansion in the exact array you choose. Do not assume every RAID level can be expanded without rebuilding or replacing drives. Read the migration instructions before selecting a layout, especially if you expect to begin with two disks and add two more.

UGREEN’s published RAID choices

The DXP4800 Plus listing names JBOD, Basic, RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, RAID 6 and RAID 10. These choices cover single-disk volumes, mirroring, parity and striped arrays, but usable capacity and fault tolerance differ substantially. RAID is not a backup: maintain a separate copy of irreplaceable data.

RAID 0 prioritizes combined performance and capacity but has no drive-failure protection. RAID 1 mirrors data and sacrifices roughly half the raw space in a two-drive arrangement. Parity levels trade some capacity and write overhead for the ability to survive specified drive failures, while RAID 10 combines mirroring and striping and requires appropriate drive counts. Treat these as planning concepts, then confirm the exact implementation in UGOS Pro.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

TerraMaster capacity and RAID qualification

TerraMaster lists up to 88TB of raw capacity using four 22TB drives. That is the sum of the drive labels before filesystem overhead, parity or mirroring. The vendor explicitly notes that usable capacity varies by RAID type, so a four-drive RAID 5, RAID 6, mirror or striped layout will not all provide the same amount of space. Confirm the F4-424’s supported arrays and expansion behavior before committing to a migration plan.

Drive labels also use decimal units, while operating systems may display a lower figure in tebibytes. Leave working space for snapshots, metadata and future growth instead of filling an array to its advertised raw maximum. If your data cannot be recreated, pair the array with an independent backup stored on another device or at another location.

Price, stock and total cost

The official UGREEN NAS US page displayed $629.99 when accessed in 2026; the page also showed a struck-through list price. This is a dated seller-page observation, not a guaranteed street price.

The TerraMaster Official Store displayed $499.99 when accessed in 2026 and indicated that the product was out of stock. That is also a volatile snapshot. Availability and pricing can change by country, retailer and date, and the two observations were not a synchronized market comparison.

Compare the complete purchase rather than the enclosure alone:

  • Four compatible NAS hard drives or SSDs.
  • Any 10GbE or 2.5GbE switch and client adapters required for your network.
  • Replacement-drive and warranty logistics in your region.
  • Power, backup storage and any UPS you need for the deployment.
  • Additional RAM if your chosen workload needs more than the installed amount.

A cheaper enclosure can become the more expensive system if it requires a network upgrade or if suitable drives are harder to source. Conversely, paying for the DXP4800 Plus’s 10GbE hardware makes little sense when every client remains on 1GbE.

Use the same currency, tax treatment and delivery terms when comparing sellers. An out-of-stock listing is not a usable bargain, and an apparently lower price may exclude shipping or regional warranty coverage. Recheck both pages immediately before ordering rather than relying on a saved promotion.

Which NAS fits common workloads?

Home backup and shared files

Either model can serve as a four-disk backup and file-sharing appliance, provided the operating system supports your backup clients and the chosen drives are compatible. The F4-424 is the sensible default when dual 2.5GbE is adequate and its lower observed price or local availability is meaningful.

Plan the backup schedule, retention and restore test before choosing the enclosure. A NAS copy is not enough if the original laptop, the NAS and the only external backup can all be lost to the same event.

Media libraries and streaming

Choose based on the clients and media workflow rather than bay count alone. Direct-play streaming is primarily a file-serving task; transcoding can add CPU load and depends on application support. The specifications supplied here do not include a matched transcoding test, so neither model should be advertised as the guaranteed winner for a particular codec or number of streams.

Check whether your televisions, phones and streaming boxes can play the files natively. If they can, network capacity and drive response may matter more than transcoding features. If you need frequent conversion for remote or incompatible clients, verify the current media application, hardware-acceleration support and expected workload on the exact OS version.

Containers, virtual machines and development services

The DXP4800 Plus’s listed 64GB ceiling and Pentium Gold 8505 make it the more flexible hardware starting point for memory-intensive experimentation. Verify that UGOS Pro provides the container or virtualization features you need and that the applications are maintained for the current release. The F4-424 can still be appropriate for lighter services within its 32GB ceiling.

Remember that virtual-machine disk images can create sustained storage traffic. Fast NVMe devices may help only when the operating system supports the intended role and the rest of the pool is not the bottleneck. Keep service data and backups separate when possible, and document how to rebuild a container or VM after a disk failure.

Large-file editing and multi-user transfers

Favor the UGREEN when your editing workstations and switching infrastructure already support 10GbE, or when you are deliberately building that network. Without matching client hardware and fast enough storage, the advantage remains unused and the TerraMaster may be the better value.

Measure the number of simultaneous editors and the size of their active projects. Four hard drives in a parity array may behave differently from SSDs, and a busy backup job can affect interactive work. Schedule heavy maintenance outside production hours and verify that the selected network mode is supported by your switch and clients.

Also check how the vendor handles account recovery, remote access and major-version upgrades. A feature listed for a related model may not be available on the F4-424 or DXP4800 Plus. Keep copies of configuration exports and application data so a reset or replacement unit does not turn into a full rebuild.

A practical buying checklist

  1. Define the workload. Write down the number of users, backup sources, media clients, containers and virtual machines you expect in the next few years.
  2. Map the network. Record the fastest port on each computer, switch and router. Select the UGREEN’s 10GbE only if the surrounding network can use it or you have budgeted for the upgrade.
  3. Choose the drives. Check the exact compatibility lists, capacity limits and whether your preferred SATA HDDs or SSDs are approved.
  4. Calculate usable space. Apply the intended RAID layout to raw drive capacity and leave room for growth; four 22TB drives in the TerraMaster are 88TB raw, not 88TB of usable filespace in every array.
  5. Check software requirements. Confirm that the current UGOS Pro or TOS release supports every backup, media, container and remote-access feature you need.
  6. Compare the complete cost and stock. Recheck both seller pages on the same date, in the same country, and include drives, networking and support considerations.
  7. Plan the backup. Keep at least one independent copy of important data; RAID protects availability after some drive failures but does not protect against deletion, ransomware or theft.
  8. Plan recovery. Test restoring a file and, if practical, rebuilding a service before the NAS contains your only copy of important data.
  9. Confirm the exact model. Verify that the listing says F4-424, not F4-424 Pro, F4-424 Max or F4-425 Plus, and that the UGREEN listing says DXP4800 Plus.

Verdict

Buy the UGREEN DXP4800 Plus when 10GbE is a real requirement, the 64GB memory ceiling is useful to your planned services, or you want the more ambitious hardware platform and can justify its price. Buy the TerraMaster F4-424 when dual 2.5GbE meets your network needs, 32GB is enough for your services, and it is materially cheaper or easier to obtain.

Recheck current prices, stock, drive compatibility and software support for the exact model before paying. Do not substitute the F4-424 Pro, F4-424 Max or F4-425 Plus for the F4-424 in a comparison; they are different products.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do both NAS units include hard drives?

No. They are diskless-style enclosures with four SATA bays. Budget separately for compatible NAS hard drives or SSDs, and check the current compatibility list for the exact model.

Is 10GbE always faster for one file copy?

No. The client adapter, switch, cabling, drive array and workload must all support the faster path. A single hard drive or a 1GbE client can remain the bottleneck.

Can I combine the TerraMaster’s two 2.5GbE ports for double speed?

Not automatically. Link aggregation and traffic distribution depend on TOS, the switch and the client configuration, and aggregation does not guarantee that one computer will transfer at twice the speed.

Which model has more memory headroom?

UGREEN lists support for up to 64GB, while TerraMaster lists 8GB installed and support for up to 32GB in one DDR5 SODIMM slot. Verify current compatibility and application support before upgrading.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is 88TB the usable capacity of the F4-424?

No. TerraMaster’s 88TB figure is raw capacity from four 22TB drives. RAID level, parity or mirroring, filesystem overhead and reserved space reduce usable capacity.

Which NAS is better for Plex or other media servers?

Neither is proven superior by a matched transcoding test here. Check the current application support, codec requirements, hardware acceleration and number of simultaneous transcodes you need.

Are RAID arrays a substitute for backups?

No. RAID can help maintain availability after certain drive failures, but it does not protect against accidental deletion, ransomware, theft or a site-wide incident. Keep an independent backup.

Are the F4-424 Pro and F4-424 Max the same product?

No. They are separate models. Confirm the exact F4-424 name and specifications when comparing prices, accessories and software support.
