Science has not established that UFOs—or, in NASA’s current terminology, unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP)—are extraterrestrial. NASA says it has found no credible evidence of extraterrestrial life and no evidence that UAP are alien technology. Some reports remain unresolved because the available observations are incomplete or poor, but “unidentified” describes an investigative status, not an alien cause.
Religious traditions can ask what life elsewhere would mean for creation, human uniqueness, sin, the soul or redemption. Those are theological questions, not methods for identifying an object in the sky. The evidence and the belief question need to be kept separate.
Are UFOs aliens?
There is no established scientific evidence that any UFO or UAP is an extraterrestrial craft. NASA’s UAP FAQ says the agency has found no credible evidence of extraterrestrial life and no evidence that UAP are extraterrestrial. Its independent study team reported in 2023 that peer-reviewed scientific literature contained “no conclusive evidence suggesting an extraterrestrial origin for UAP.”

A lack of credible evidence is not proof that life elsewhere is impossible, just as an unexplained observation is not proof that an alien vehicle caused it.

Three claims that must not be merged
- Life beyond Earth may exist. This is a broad possibility about biology in the universe.
- A particular UAP report may be unexplained. Investigators may not have enough reliable data to identify it.
- A particular UAP may be extraterrestrial technology. This is a specific origin claim requiring evidence of non-human manufacture or provenance.
Evidence for one proposition would not automatically establish either of the others. For example, finding microbial life on another world would not show that a military video depicts an alien craft. Conversely, failing to identify a distant object does not establish that life exists elsewhere.
What does science say about UFOs?
NASA uses unidentified anomalous phenomena for observations in the sky that cannot yet be identified as aircraft or known natural phenomena. The word “unidentified” records what investigators have not attributed; it does not name a mechanism, pilot or place of origin.
NASA’s independent study was designed around scientific methods, data quality and ways to improve future observations. It was not a declaration that extraterrestrial life is impossible, and it was not a complete re-investigation of every historical sighting. NASA says the study selected 16 team members and took nine months; those figures describe the study process, not the likelihood of an alien explanation.

Many reports contain only a witness account, a short video, an instrument display without calibration information, or a recording viewed outside its original context. Such material can be genuine while still being insufficient to determine distance, speed, size, altitude or identity. The 2023 NASA report notes that eyewitness accounts are not reproducible and usually do not provide enough information for a definitive provenance claim.

Scientific attribution normally requires more than an unusual appearance. Investigators need time-synchronized sensor data, the sensor’s operating characteristics, viewing geometry, weather and astronomical information, and enough independent measurements to test competing explanations. When those inputs are missing, the responsible conclusion is “not identified from the available evidence,” not “therefore extraterrestrial.”
How official investigations distinguish an unknown from an anomaly
A case can move through several evidentiary stages. An initial report may be labelled unidentified because no analyst can match it immediately to a known aircraft, balloon, satellite, bird, astronomical object, atmospheric effect or sensor artifact. Additional metadata or independent observations can later support an ordinary attribution. A small remainder may stay unresolved because the record is too weak to decide.

The Al Taqaddum example
The All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office’s public case-resolution index describes the Al Taqaddum case as an infrared recording assessed with high confidence as consistent with a cluster of fully and partially inflated balloons. The assessment says the object did not exhibit anomalous behavior or capabilities. This is a case-level agency conclusion. It demonstrates why analysts evaluate each report on its own data; it does not show that every UAP has a balloon explanation.
What can science actually prove?
What current evidence supports
- Some observations have not been identified as aircraft or known natural phenomena.
- Many reports do not contain the quality or quantity of data needed for definitive attribution.
- Peer-reviewed literature, as summarized by NASA’s 2023 team, provides no conclusive evidence of extraterrestrial origin for UAP.
- At least some cases can be assessed as ordinary objects when the evidence permits, as in the Al Taqaddum assessment.
- NASA reports no credible evidence of extraterrestrial life in the evidence available to the agency.
What current evidence cannot establish
- It cannot prove that no extraterrestrial life exists anywhere.
- It cannot turn every unresolved report into evidence of aliens.
- It cannot establish the origin of a particular object without reliable provenance data.
- It cannot use a theological interpretation as a substitute for physical measurements.
The distinction matters because “not explained” and “explained as extraterrestrial” are different scientific conclusions. The first may reflect missing data; the second requires positive evidence that survives testing against ordinary alternatives.

Does believing in aliens conflict with religion?
There is no single religious answer established by the sources available here. Religious traditions differ internally, and a denomination’s official teaching is not the same thing as an individual theologian’s speculation or an educational discussion.
A person can regard extraterrestrial life as scientifically possible without rejecting religious belief. Theological reflection may ask how a discovery would relate to creation, human uniqueness, the soul, original sin or redemption. Those questions concern meaning and doctrine. They do not identify the object recorded in a particular UAP report.
What the Vatican Observatory perspective says
Educational material associated with the Vatican Observatory treats extraterrestrial intelligence as an open question. It discusses theological questions a discovery could raise, including how theologians might think about original sin, the soul and redemption. It does not claim that extraterrestrial beings have been detected, and it should not be presented as a statement of what all religions—or even every Catholic theologian—believe.

Why science and theology should not be collapsed
In a June 1, 1988, letter to Vatican Observatory director George V. Coyne, Pope John Paul II wrote: “The Church does not propose that science should become religion or religion science.” He also wrote: “Only a dynamic relationship between theology and science can reveal those limits which support the integrity of either discipline, so that theology does not profess a pseudo-science and science does not become an unconscious theology.”
Applied to UAP claims, the point is methodological. Science asks what was observed, how reliably it was measured and which explanation best fits the data. Theology can consider what a discovery would mean for a tradition’s understanding of creation and humanity. Neither discipline should claim the other’s authority: a religious possibility is not an instrument reading, and a sensor result does not by itself settle a doctrine.
How to evaluate an alleged alien-UFO claim
Use the following sequence before accepting either an extraterrestrial explanation or a confident debunking:

Is it about life elsewhere in general, an unexplained observation, or the origin of a specific object?
- Identify the data. Look for original files, timestamps, sensor type, calibration information, location, weather and viewing geometry—not only a compressed clip or a retelling.
- Check for independent measurements. Radar, infrared, optical and astronomical records that agree in time and position are more informative than repeated copies of one source.
- Separate appearance from motion. Perspective, camera movement, focus, parallax and automatic tracking can make an ordinary object appear to accelerate or change size.
- Test ordinary explanations. Examine aircraft, balloons, satellites, birds, drones, atmospheric phenomena, reflections and sensor artifacts before invoking an extraordinary origin.
- Read the conclusion precisely. “Unresolved,” “consistent with,” “likely” and “high confidence” have different meanings. An agency assessment applies to the case and evidence it examined.
- Ask what would change the conclusion. A claim that cannot be tested against new measurements is speculation rather than a settled scientific result.
Common reasoning errors
“The government cannot identify it, so it must be alien”
Government investigators can lack the range, metadata or access needed for attribution. An information gap is not positive evidence for a particular cause.

“Science says there are no aliens”
NASA’s statement is that it has found no credible evidence of extraterrestrial life and no evidence that UAP are extraterrestrial. That is a report about evidence, not a proof of universal nonexistence.
“A religious authority believes it, so the sighting is confirmed”
Theological discussion can treat extraterrestrial intelligence as possible without identifying a physical object. Religious authority does not replace sensor data, and a theological possibility does not authenticate a video.
“One explanation fits one case, so it fits them all”
The Al Taqaddum balloon assessment illustrates case-by-case analysis. It does not justify assuming that every unresolved report is a balloon, a secret aircraft or an alien craft.
What evidence would materially strengthen an extraterrestrial-origin claim?
A stronger claim would need more than an unusual shape or an unexplained trajectory. Investigators would look for original, verifiable data from calibrated and independent sensors; a reliably reconstructed position, distance and motion; physical material with a documented chain of custody; and analysis that rules out known human, natural and instrumental explanations. The data would need to be available for independent review and ideally replicated by researchers who were not involved in the initial claim.
Even then, evidence of life elsewhere and evidence that a particular UAP is extraterrestrial would remain separate propositions. Establishing either would require evidence tailored to that exact question.
Bottom line
UAP is a label for observations that have not yet been identified, not a synonym for alien spacecraft. NASA reports no credible evidence of extraterrestrial life and no evidence that UAP are extraterrestrial, while its 2023 study found no conclusive extraterrestrial-origin evidence in the peer-reviewed literature. Some cases remain unresolved because the data are inadequate; others can be attributed to ordinary objects. Religious reflection—such as the Vatican Observatory’s Catholic discussion of extraterrestrial intelligence—can explore meaning and doctrine without establishing what a camera or radar recorded. The most accurate position is therefore open-minded but evidence-led: life elsewhere is possible, unidentified reports deserve careful investigation, and no alien origin has been scientifically established.
