If Ubuntu voice dictation is not working, start with the microphone itself rather than the speech recognizer. Open Settings → Sound → Input, select the microphone you intend to use, speak, and watch the input-level indicator. A moving meter proves that Ubuntu is receiving audio; a silent meter points to device selection, connection, mute, or input-volume problems. If the meter moves, test an independent recording and then check the dictation app’s permissions, package type, Ubuntu release, desktop session, and text-entry compatibility.

This order prevents unnecessary hardware purchases and separates four different failures: no usable microphone signal, audio capture that is routed incorrectly, an application that cannot access the microphone, and speech recognition that runs but cannot insert text.

Use this decision path first

  1. No movement in Settings → Sound → Input: choose the correct device, reconnect it, raise input volume, and check that it is not muted or switched off.
  2. The input meter moves: make a short recording with arecord test.wav, stop with Ctrl+C, and play the WAV file. This distinguishes basic capture from dictation-specific problems.
  3. The recording is audible but dictation does nothing: verify that the dictation application is installed, configured for your Ubuntu release and session, allowed to record, and aimed at a text field that accepts injected text.
  4. Words appear but recognition is poor: recheck the selected input and signal quality, then review the application’s language and engine settings. Different speech engines make different language, accuracy, and hardware trade-offs.

Do not treat every Ubuntu microphone failure as a system-wide privacy-toggle problem. Permission behavior depends on the Ubuntu release and how the dictation application was packaged.

Check the microphone in Ubuntu Sound settings

Select the intended input

Open Settings → Sound → Input. Ubuntu can expose several inputs at once, including a laptop’s internal microphone, a webcam microphone, a headset, and a USB microphone. Select the device you actually want to use before testing speech. If the wrong device is selected, the recognizer may be listening to silence even though another microphone is working.

Watch the input-level indicator

Speak at a normal distance and volume while the selected device is active. The input-level indicator should respond to your voice. This is the fastest system-level test because it does not depend on a particular dictation application. A responding indicator means the desktop is receiving an audio signal; it does not yet prove that a specific application can open the stream or insert text.

Raise input volume and clear mute states

Confirm that input volume is above zero and that the microphone has not been muted or switched off. Check any physical mute button on a headset, keyboard, webcam, or microphone as well as the software control in Sound settings. Test again after changing one setting at a time so you know which change restored the signal.

USB microphones need explicit selection

Ubuntu treats a USB microphone as a separate audio device. After plugging it in, return to Settings → Sound → Input and select the USB device explicitly if Ubuntu has not made it the default. Speak while watching the meter. A device that appears in the list but shows no activity may be muted, have its input level at zero, or be the wrong USB audio endpoint.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A USB microphone is an optional replacement or diagnostic device, not a required purchase. Complete the built-in microphone, mute, volume, and recording checks first. If a USB microphone produces a healthy input meter and recording while the original device does not, you have isolated the fault to the original microphone path. The available evidence does not establish compatibility or performance for any particular model.

Prove whether Ubuntu can record audio

Make a short capture

  1. Open a terminal after selecting the intended input in Sound settings.
  2. Run arecord test.wav.
  3. Speak for several seconds at a normal level.
  4. Stop the command with Ctrl+C.
  5. Open test.wav in an audio player and listen for your voice.

An audible file shows that a basic capture path is working, even if the dictation program still fails. A silent or empty file means you should continue investigating input selection, routing, mute state, and the application’s chosen input before changing recognition settings.

The Ubuntu Community Help Wiki page that documents this check was last edited in 2013. Use arecord test.wav as a simple diagnostic, not as a complete current mixer-repair procedure. Avoid applying old, system-wide mixer instructions without first identifying your Ubuntu release, audio stack, desktop session, and hardware.

Interpret the result

  • Meter silent and recording silent: stay at the device, connection, mute, and input-volume level. Dictation software cannot recognize speech that Ubuntu never receives.
  • Meter moves but recording is silent: examine capture routing and whether the recording command or application is opening a different input than the one selected in Settings.
  • Recording is clear but dictation fails: move to permissions, installation, session compatibility, and text insertion. The microphone hardware is no longer the first suspect.
  • Recording is intelligible but words are inaccurate: confirm language and engine configuration and ensure the signal is clean before judging recognition quality.

When microphone access is an application-permission issue

If Ubuntu’s input meter and the independent recording both work, a dictation application may still be denied access. Check the application’s own settings and any permission prompt it displays. Also verify whether it is installed as a Snap, because Snap permissions can determine whether an application may use an audio stream.

Ubuntu 26.04 Snap prompting

Canonical documents permission prompting for the audio-record Snap interface in Ubuntu 26.04. When the relevant prompting feature and components are active, WirePlumber checks the interface when an application tries to use an audio stream, and the application can ask you for microphone permission.

To enable the documented prompting behavior, open Security Center → App Permissions, turn on Require apps to ask for system permissions, then log out and back in. Use these steps only when they match your Ubuntu release and Snap setup. Canonical says prompting and most of the described features are available to snaps on releases back to Ubuntu 24.04, while the required prompting components are expected to be preinstalled on 24.10 and later.

If a prompt appears, allow recording for the dictation application you trust and retry the dictation shortcut. If no prompt appears, do not assume that this setting applies to every package: a deb package, a non-Snap installation, or a different Ubuntu release can follow a different permission path. Check the application’s installation method and documentation before changing system audio configuration.

Check dictation compatibility, not just the microphone

A working microphone does not guarantee that speech-to-text will operate in every application. Confirm all of the following:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The dictation feature is installed and has completed its own setup.
  • Your Ubuntu release and architecture are supported.
  • Your desktop session, including GNOME on Wayland where required, is supported.
  • The application has microphone access under its package and permission model.
  • The cursor is in a text-entry target that accepts the application’s text injection.
  • The configured language matches what you are speaking.

Some tools can capture speech yet fail to place text in a particular editor, browser field, terminal, or remote session. Test in a simple local text field first. If text appears there but not in one application, the input device is probably not the cause; investigate that application’s focus, security restrictions, or text-entry support.

Ubuntu’s current Myna context

Ubuntu does not provide one universal dictation experience across every release and desktop configuration. Canonical announced Myna as an optional speech-to-text technology preview on 12 October 2026. The listed availability is:

Requirement Listed support
Ubuntu releases Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, 26.04 LTS, and 26.10
Architecture amd64 and amd64v3
Desktop session GNOME on Wayland
Product status Optional technology preview under active development

Those targets are version-sensitive. If you are outside the listed release, architecture, or session combination, do not assume that Myna will install or inject text correctly. Check Canonical’s current announcement and the setup screen for your exact system.

Install and configure Myna

For a listed system, Canonical’s announced installation sequence is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Terminal.
  2. Run sudo add-apt-repository ppa:canonical-desktop-team/myna.
  3. Install the configuration package with sudo apt install myna-config.
  4. Open Myna settings and follow the setup prompts.

After setup, use the configured keyboard shortcut, speak naturally, and check whether text appears in the active application. That is the intended initial experience, not a guarantee that every application accepts injected text. Canonical describes Myna as focused on dictation; voice assistants, voice commands, desktop control, translation, and automatic language detection were outside the initial scope described for the project.

Canonical explicitly warns that Myna is under active development and that users should expect rough edges. A failure to start, a shortcut that does not trigger, or text that does not appear can therefore be a preview limitation or compatibility issue rather than a defective microphone.

Understand Myna’s speech engines

Myna supports Parakeet, Whisper, and FunASR engines. Canonical identifies language support, recognition accuracy, and hardware requirements as the relevant trade-offs, but the announcement provides no numerical head-to-head benchmark. Do not choose an engine on the assumption that one is universally best.

When recognition is poor, compare the settings that are actually documented for your installation:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Language and accent coverage: choose an engine and language that include the speech you are using.
  • Hardware demand: an engine may require more processing resources than another; a supported NVIDIA GPU may enable a GPU-accelerated engine.
  • Recognition behavior: judge the result only after confirming a clean, correctly selected input signal.
  • Text insertion: verify that the target application accepts Myna’s method of inserting text.

There is no published accuracy percentage or latency figure in the cited announcement, so a specific numerical performance promise would be misleading.

Privacy and offline operation in Myna

Canonical says Myna’s speech recognition runs on the user’s machine. After a model has been downloaded, transcription does not require an internet connection, and Canonical says audio is not uploaded or stored. The initial model download and subsequent local processing are separate concerns: allow the download during setup, then expect offline transcription once the model is present.

These privacy properties apply to Myna as described by Canonical. A different dictation application can have its own data handling, network, and storage behavior, so check that application’s documentation rather than generalizing Myna’s behavior to all Ubuntu speech tools.

Fixes for common symptom patterns

“The microphone isn’t working” and the meter never moves

  1. Return to Settings → Sound → Input.
  2. Select the intended internal, headset, webcam, or USB microphone.
  3. Raise input volume and clear software and physical mute controls.
  4. Reconnect an external device and select it again.
  5. Repeat the speaking test while watching the meter.

Do not begin by changing recognizer language or installing a new dictation tool; those settings cannot create an audio signal that the desktop does not see.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The meter moves, but the WAV test is silent

Check whether the command captured a different input than the one selected in Sound settings. Recheck routing, mute state, and the application’s or command’s chosen capture device. Because the cited community instructions are old, avoid copying detailed legacy mixer edits as if they were universal fixes for current Ubuntu releases.

The WAV file is audible, but dictation never starts

Confirm that the feature is installed and configured, then verify package permissions. For a Snap on a release using Ubuntu’s prompting system, respond to the audio-record request or enable prompting through Security Center → App Permissions when appropriate. Check the Ubuntu release, desktop session, and whether a keyboard shortcut is configured.

Dictation starts but inserts nothing

Place the cursor in a simple local text field and try again. If text appears there, the original application may not support the injection method or may block automated text entry. If no application accepts text, revisit the dictation setup and session compatibility rather than buying another microphone.

Dictation inserts inaccurate text

First confirm that Ubuntu is listening to the intended microphone and that the recording is clear. Then review the selected language and engine. Parakeet, Whisper, and FunASR have different documented trade-offs, and Myna does not publish a universal benchmark that would justify promising one engine’s accuracy.

When replacing hardware is reasonable

Consider a USB microphone only after the free checks identify a weak or failed original input. Ubuntu documents USB microphones as separate devices, so selecting the new device explicitly is part of the test. A replacement can be a practical workaround when the built-in microphone remains silent, but no particular model has been verified here and no purchase is required for a permission, routing, or compatibility problem.

What to record before asking for help

Support becomes much faster when you report the facts that determine the troubleshooting branch:

  • Ubuntu release and whether it is a standard or development release.
  • System architecture, especially if testing Myna.
  • Desktop session, such as GNOME on Wayland.
  • Microphone type: internal, headset, webcam, or USB.
  • Whether the Sound input meter moves.
  • Whether arecord test.wav produces an audible file.
  • Dictation application’s installation method, including whether it is a Snap.
  • Whether dictation starts, recognizes speech, and inserts text in a simple local text field.

These observations identify whether the failure is at the hardware, audio-capture, permission, recognizer, or text-injection stage without imposing unrelated system-wide changes.
