For Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS, Canonical lists a 2 GHz dual-core processor or better, 6 GB of RAM, and 25 GB of free storage for a comfortable experience. You also need installation media: a USB port or DVD drive, plus a USB flash drive of 8 GB or larger if you create a bootable installer. Those figures describe the Desktop release, not every Ubuntu edition, and meeting them does not guarantee that Wi-Fi, graphics, audio, suspend, touchpad or other devices will work correctly. Check your exact computer configuration in Ubuntu’s certified-hardware catalog, then boot the live USB and test the hardware before installing permanently.

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Desktop requirements at a glance

The latest long-term-support Desktop release listed by Canonical is Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS. Its release notes describe the following as requirements for a comfortable desktop experience:

Component Published requirement What it means in practice
Processor 2 GHz dual-core processor or better The CPU must support the architecture of the image you intend to install. Clock speed alone does not certify the rest of the computer.
Memory 6 GB RAM This is the stated Desktop figure for comfortable use. More memory helps when running browsers with many tabs, virtual machines or large applications.
Storage 25 GB of free space Reserve this amount on the target drive and additional room for updates, applications and personal files.
Installation media USB port or DVD drive A USB flash drive is the practical option on most current computers.
Internet connection Helpful, but not required for the initial installation You will need connectivity later for updates, drivers, language packs and additional software.

A computer below these figures may still boot or install, but Canonical does not present that as a comfortable standard Desktop configuration. For older hardware, an official lighter flavor such as Xubuntu or Lubuntu may be more appropriate.

First decide which Ubuntu image and edition you need

Desktop and Server are different targets

Do not apply the Desktop checklist to Ubuntu Server. Server requirements depend on the workload: a small file server, a database host and a virtualization machine have very different CPU, memory and storage needs. Select the Server documentation for the exact release and workload instead of treating 6 GB RAM and 25 GB storage as universal Ubuntu requirements.

Match the processor architecture

The current Desktop download page lists Intel/AMD 64-bit and ARM 64-bit images. Choose the image that matches the machine’s processor architecture; an image for one architecture is not a generic installer for every computer.

The release image directory also provides Raspberry Pi preinstalled images and server images for additional architectures. These are board- or architecture-specific builds, not interchangeable PC installers. For RISC-V, the 26.04 image directory identifies RVA23 and newer images, while the release summary says 26.04 requires the RVA23S64 profile. Ubuntu 24.04 continues to support earlier RVA20 processor cores, so an older RISC-V board may need that release rather than 26.04.

Do not confuse optimized images with minimum requirements

Ubuntu’s architecture guidance describes the standard x86-64 image as preserving a broad compatibility baseline and mentions an amd64v3 optimized variant for newer CPUs. The optimized variant is an optional performance-oriented build; it does not replace the general Desktop minimum. If you are unsure which variant your CPU supports, use the standard image listed for your architecture.

Will Ubuntu work on your computer? Check the exact configuration

A processor model is only one part of a computer. Motherboard firmware, chipset, graphics, storage controller, network adapter, audio device, input hardware and power-management implementation can determine whether the installed system is actually usable. Ubuntu’s own architecture guidance summarizes this point as: “A CPU is just one part of the hardware stack.”

Use Ubuntu Certified hardware as your strongest pre-check

Search Ubuntu’s certified-hardware catalog for the exact laptop or desktop model and, where shown, its exact configuration. Pay attention to the Ubuntu release named in the listing. Certification for one release or configuration is evidence for that combination; it is not blanket approval for every machine sold under the same product family or for every later release.

  • Verify that the listing covers Ubuntu 26.04 or the release you plan to install.
  • Read any notes about docking stations, displays, firmware, fingerprint readers or other optional components.

If the exact system is not listed, that does not prove incompatibility. It means you need a practical test, preferably from a live USB, and should keep a recovery plan for the existing operating system and data.

Test an unlisted computer safely with a live USB

Ubuntu’s “Try Ubuntu” session runs from the installer without changing the internal drive unless you deliberately start the installation. It is the most useful way to check an unlisted computer before committing to a permanent install.

  1. Back up the flash drive. Writing the Ubuntu image erases the USB stick. Use a drive of 8 GB or larger and copy off anything you need first.
  2. Download the matching 26.04.1 LTS image. Select Intel/AMD 64-bit or ARM 64-bit according to the target computer. Use a board-specific image for supported single-board systems rather than the PC Desktop image.
  3. Create the bootable USB. Use Ubuntu’s documented image-writing method or a trusted imaging utility. Confirm that the destination is the USB drive, not an internal disk.
  4. Boot from USB. Restart the computer and open its temporary boot menu, commonly with a manufacturer-specific function key. Select the USB device and choose the option to try Ubuntu without installing.
  5. Connect to wireless and wired networks. Check whether the Wi-Fi adapter sees your network, whether authentication succeeds and whether Ethernet works through the ports or dock you depend on.
  6. Check graphics and displays. Test the built-in panel, brightness controls, the native resolution, hardware acceleration in a browser and every external monitor or projector you expect to use.
  7. Test audio and input. Play sound through speakers, headphones and Bluetooth if relevant. Check the keyboard, touchpad, pointing device, webcam, microphone and function keys.
  8. Test suspend and resume. Close and reopen the lid on a laptop or use the desktop suspend command. Confirm that the display, network, audio and input devices return correctly.
  9. Test specialized hardware. Try fingerprint readers, card readers, tablets, game controllers, docks, scanners or unusual storage devices before installing.
  10. Record problems and identify the device. Write down symptoms, adapter names and whether a device works only after reconnecting. This information is more useful than a simple “it booted” result.

A live session is a strong compatibility check, but it cannot promise that every future kernel, firmware update or workload will behave identically. Test the features you actually need rather than treating a successful boot as complete certification.

Storage compatibility: Intel RST can block installation

Some Windows computers use Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST) for the internal drive. Ubuntu’s installer does not support installing to a disk left in an unsupported RST configuration. The installer may warn that RST must be disabled or reconfigured before it can continue.

What to do when RST is detected

  1. Stop and identify the exact computer model and its storage documentation.
  2. Read the official Ubuntu instructions and the manufacturer’s instructions for switching Windows from RST to AHCI.
  3. Understand the Windows and data implications before changing firmware or operating-system settings.
  4. Back up important files and make sure you have a Windows recovery method.
  5. Only then change the storage mode, following the model-specific sequence; do not guess at BIOS settings.

Changing storage mode without preparing Windows can make the existing installation unbootable. If you need to preserve a dual-boot setup, treat this as a system change requiring a backup and a recovery plan, not as a routine installer checkbox.

Apple Silicon Macs need separate expectations

Ubuntu’s ordinary Desktop documentation directs users with M1-and-later Macs to Ubuntu Asahi, a community project that Canonical does not support. Compatibility is machine-specific and can be limited, so check current Ubuntu Asahi support for the exact Mac model and the release you intend to use. Do not assume that an Intel Mac procedure or a standard Intel/AMD 64-bit PC image applies to Apple Silicon.

How to compare two computers for Ubuntu

When choosing between systems, compare the factors that affect actual use rather than relying on a CPU benchmark or a product-family name.

Decision factor Questions to answer Why it matters
Release certification Is the exact model and configuration certified for Ubuntu 26.04? Certification is the clearest evidence that the complete hardware combination has been validated.
Architecture Is there an official image for the processor or board? Without a matching image, the normal Desktop installation path may not apply.
RAM and storage Does it meet 6 GB RAM and 25 GB free storage, with room for your files? Meeting the published figures avoids an immediately constrained desktop.
Graphics and displays Will the required internal and external screens, resolution and acceleration work? Display problems can make an otherwise installable system unsuitable.
Networking and input Do Wi-Fi, Ethernet, Bluetooth, audio, keyboard and touchpad work in the live session? These devices determine whether you can use and administer the computer day to day.
Power management Does suspend/resume work, and is battery behavior acceptable? A laptop that cannot reliably wake or conserve power may not be practical.
Storage mode Is Intel RST enabled? Unsupported RST settings can stop the installer until Windows and firmware are reconfigured.
Ease of testing Can you boot a USB and return to the existing system? A reversible test reduces the risk of discovering a problem after installation.

Low-spec computers and realistic compromises

The 26.04 Desktop figures target comfortable use, not an absolute hardware impossibility line. A machine below them may start the installer but become slow when the desktop, browser and background services compete for memory. If your computer has limited RAM, a small drive or an older processor, consider an official lighter flavor rather than forcing the full Desktop environment.

  • Use a lighter flavor when the primary goal is responsive basic browsing, documents and utilities on older hardware.
  • Keep additional free storage for updates, browser caches, application packages and personal files; 25 GB should not be treated as the amount available for everything.
  • Prefer an SSD where possible. The published requirement specifies capacity, not performance, so a slow disk can remain the bottleneck even when its size is sufficient.
  • Reduce startup applications and browser tabs only after confirming that the hardware is otherwise compatible; software tuning cannot fix a missing Wi-Fi driver or a broken suspend implementation.

Installation-media and backup checklist

  • Confirm the release (Ubuntu Desktop 26.04.1 LTS, Server, or an official flavor) before downloading.
  • Verify CPU architecture and select the corresponding image.
  • Use an 8 GB-or-larger USB flash drive and assume that creating the installer will erase it.
  • Back up personal files and create recovery media for the current operating system.
  • Ensure at least 25 GB of free target storage, plus capacity for updates, applications and data.
  • Have network access available for updates even though it is not required for the first installation steps.
  • If the installer reports RST, stop and follow model-specific AHCI guidance before proceeding.
  • Keep the live USB available until Wi-Fi, graphics, audio, input, suspend and external displays have been tested after installation.

Common compatibility problems and the right response

The computer boots, but Wi-Fi is missing

Use Ethernet or another temporary connection if available, identify the wireless chipset and check whether the live session sees it. Do not conclude that Ubuntu is incompatible solely because a proprietary or newer wireless device needs additional software; verify support for the exact adapter and release before installing permanently.

The display is blank or uses the wrong resolution

Try the computer’s other graphics output, disconnect external displays and reboot the live session. Check whether the system has switchable or discrete graphics. If the issue persists, look for the exact model in the certified catalog rather than assuming that a different model with the same CPU will behave the same way.

The installer cannot see the internal drive

Check firmware storage mode first, especially Intel RST. Do not delete partitions or change controller settings until backups and Windows recovery steps are ready.

Suspend, touchpad or special keys fail

These are device- and firmware-dependent functions that the CPU and memory figures cannot predict. Record the exact symptom during the live test and search certification notes for the model and release. If the feature is essential and remains unreliable, choose a configuration with documented support.

Final decision: install, test further or choose another configuration

Install Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS when the computer meets the 2 GHz dual-core, 6 GB RAM and 25 GB free-storage guidance, has a matching architecture image, and passes your live-session tests. If the exact model is certified, confidence is higher. If it is unlisted, a clean live-USB test of networking, graphics, audio, input, suspend and storage is the practical evidence you can obtain before changing the disk.

Pause rather than forcing the installation when the architecture has no suitable image, Intel RST has not been safely reconfigured, essential hardware fails in the live session, or Apple Silicon support for the exact Mac is unclear. Requirements are a starting filter; whole-device behavior determines whether Ubuntu will be a dependable computer for your work.
