Ubuntu on WSL 2 can replace a Linux dual-boot partition if you mainly need Linux command-line tools, development software, or supported Linux GUI apps while working in Windows 11. It runs Linux alongside Windows without restarting to switch operating systems. It is not a full Linux desktop running directly on your PC: WSL 2 runs a Linux kernel inside a managed virtual machine, and some device, networking, memory, and desktop workloads remain better suited to native Linux.
Can WSL replace a Linux dual-boot partition?
For many development and command-line workflows, yes. Microsoft describes WSL as a way to run Linux distributions, applications, utilities, and Bash tools directly on Windows, without a traditional dual-boot setup. WSL 2 uses a real Linux kernel in a managed virtual machine and supports full Linux system-call compatibility. Microsoft’s WSL overview explains the model, while its WSL 1 and WSL 2 comparison lays out the practical trade-offs.
The difference matters: WSL integrates a Linux environment into Windows; dual boot starts one operating system at a time on the machine. If your Linux use means running development tools and supported applications, WSL may remove the need to restart into Ubuntu. If you depend on a complete Linux desktop, direct hardware access, or a particular native networking setup, test those requirements before removing a partition.

| Need or workflow | WSL 2 | Native Linux dual boot |
|---|---|---|
| Linux command-line tools and development | Designed to run Linux distributions and tools alongside Windows; WSL 2 has full system-call compatibility, though individual software requirements still matter. | Runs Linux directly on the machine. |
| Linux project files used by Linux tools | Best kept in the Linux filesystem for performance; working across Windows and Linux filesystems can be slower. | Files reside on the Linux filesystem. |
| Windows-file-heavy workflow | Microsoft notes WSL 1 may be faster for some work that accesses files mounted from Windows; compare the version trade-off for your workflow. | Requires accessing Windows files from Linux where needed. |
| Full Linux desktop environment | Not provided. WSL supports launching individual Linux GUI apps into the Windows desktop. | Provides the native Linux desktop environment installed on the machine. |
| Serial ports and specialized device access | Serial devices are unsupported in WSL 2 according to Microsoft’s version comparison. USB devices require a separate USB/IP setup. | Can offer direct access, subject to the hardware and Linux support. |
| Memory-sensitive or specialized networking work | WSL 2’s managed VM and networking model may not suit strict memory requirements or workflows that need network addressing closer to a native host. | Runs directly on the machine and may better fit requirements that depend on native behavior. |
| Switching between Windows and Linux | Use Linux tools without rebooting into another operating system. | Restart to change the operating system. |
This is a workload comparison, not a universal performance ranking. Results depend on the tools, filesystems, device access, and configuration your work requires.

What WSL 2 does—and does not—provide
Linux tools alongside Windows
WSL lets you keep Windows as the host while using a Linux distribution and its command-line tools. WSL 2’s Linux kernel and system-call compatibility make it a strong option for many development environments. That does not guarantee every Linux program or system-level workflow will behave as it would on a native installation; check the requirements of the specific software you rely on.
Individual Linux GUI apps, not a full desktop
Supported Linux GUI applications can appear in the Windows desktop, including Start menu entries, taskbar pinning, Alt+Tab switching, and clipboard integration. Microsoft explicitly notes that GUI app support does not provide a full desktop experience, and some desktop-focused apps may not be supported. See Microsoft’s WSL GUI apps guidance.

Filesystem location affects the experience
If Linux tools will regularly operate on your project files, keep those files in the Linux filesystem rather than making the tools cross between Linux and Windows file locations. Microsoft identifies cross-filesystem performance as a WSL 2 consideration. Conversely, if most of your work is on Windows files, Microsoft notes that WSL 1 can be faster for some mounted-Windows-filesystem scenarios; compare that benefit with WSL 1’s different compatibility model in the version comparison.

Hardware, memory, networking, and GPU needs
Microsoft flags serial-device support, strict memory requirements, and certain networking requirements as reasons to examine whether WSL 2 fits before leaving native Linux. USB access has a separate USB/IP setup path; it is not the same as unrestricted native hardware access. These are specific compatibility questions, not proof that WSL cannot support any given device or workload.

GPU support is also workload- and configuration-specific. Canonical documents CUDA on WSL for an NVIDIA GPU with Ubuntu 24.04 or later, WSL 2, and a Windows vGPU driver. Its instructions warn against installing a Linux display driver inside Ubuntu on WSL and caution that generic CUDA packages from Ubuntu repositories may try to install the wrong driver. Consult Canonical’s CUDA on WSL guide if that is your use case; it does not establish universal GPU parity with native Linux.
Install Ubuntu on WSL 2 in Windows 11
Microsoft’s quick-start route is wsl --install. The command requires Windows 10 version 2004 (build 19041) or later, or Windows 11. Canonical recommends Windows 11 or Windows 10 21H2 or later on physical hardware for its WSL setup guidance, with virtualization enabled for WSL 2. Follow the current Microsoft installation instructions if the command or Windows setup differs on your system.

- Open PowerShell or Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Run
wsl --install. This installs WSL and the default Ubuntu distribution; restart if Windows prompts you to. - Launch Ubuntu after installation and create the Linux username and password when asked. These are credentials for the Linux environment, not a replacement for your Windows account.
- Check the installed distributions and their WSL versions by running
wsl --list --verbose. Confirm Ubuntu is using version 2 before relying on WSL 2-specific behavior.
If WSL is already installed and you want to choose a distribution, list available options with wsl --list --online, then install one using wsl --install -d <DistroName>. Use the distribution name shown in the list.

Installing Ubuntu on WSL does not migrate the files, packages, settings, or boot configuration from an existing native Ubuntu installation. Treat the change as a migration: set up the tools and projects you need in WSL, check that your actual workflow works, and preserve anything you may need from the old installation.

- Inventory what you use. Note important projects, development tools, environment settings, scripts, and any hardware or networking dependencies. Verify that required software works in WSL 2 rather than assuming compatibility from the fact that it runs on Linux.
- Keep Linux projects in WSL’s Linux filesystem. This avoids relying on cross-filesystem access for work that Linux tools handle heavily.
- Export any WSL distribution you need to preserve. Microsoft documents
wsl --export <DistributionName> <FileName>to create an export andwsl --importto bring a distribution into WSL. Follow the official WSL command reference for syntax and options. - Do not use unregister as a shutdown command.
wsl --unregister <DistributionName>permanently removes that WSL distribution’s data, settings, and installed software. Export anything you need before unregistering. - Make native partition changes only after checking your machine’s disk and boot layout. The WSL commands do not establish that deleting a Linux partition is safe for every PC. Partition and boot changes depend on the system’s actual configuration.
When to keep dual boot
Keep native Linux available, at least until you have tested your required tasks, if any of these apply:
- You need a complete Linux desktop rather than individual GUI applications.
- Your workflow depends on serial devices, direct hardware behavior, or USB access that you cannot configure successfully through WSL.
- You have strict memory constraints or networking requirements that depend on native-host behavior.
- A required application or system-level component does not work in WSL 2.
- Your GPU workload is outside the documented configuration for the feature you need, or you cannot meet its driver and software prerequisites.
For a Windows 11 PC used mainly for Linux development and command-line work, WSL 2 can make a separate Ubuntu boot unnecessary. Make that decision based on your actual applications, files, and devices—not on an assumption that WSL and native Linux are interchangeable.
