Ubuntu 26.10, codenamed “Stonking Stingray,” was released on 15 October 2026 as an interim Ubuntu version. Its defining wrinkle is that it shipped while upstream Linux 7.3 was still at release-candidate stage. Canonical says installed systems will move to the completed 7.3 kernel when it becomes available, so this release combines very new hardware support with more testing risk than a mature long-term-support installation.

What Ubuntu 26.10 is

Canonical announced Ubuntu 26.10 as available to download and install on 15 October 2026 through ubuntu.com/download. “Stonking Stingray” is an interim release rather than a long-term-support (LTS) edition. Interim versions are aimed at users who want newer kernels, drivers and desktop components before those changes reach a later stable base.

The release schedule reached Feature Freeze on 20 August, Kernel Feature Freeze on 17 September, Beta Freeze and Hardware Enablement Freeze on 21 September, beta on 24 September, Kernel Freeze on 1 October, and final release on 15 October. Those dates explain why software selected for the image could be current while upstream projects were still finishing their own releases.

Why Ubuntu shipped a pre-release kernel

Canonical’s kernel team originally targeted Linux 7.2, then changed the target to Linux 7.3 on 1 September 2026 as upstream development progressed. The team planned to put 7.3 in Ubuntu’s -proposed pocket for early testing. By Ubuntu’s final build, upstream had reached release candidate 7 rather than the completed 7.3.

Waiting for the upstream final kernel would have delayed Ubuntu 26.10 beyond its scheduled interim-release window. Instead, Canonical aligned the release with the near-final kernel and committed to update installations when the finished 7.3 is available. Launch reporting described the shipped kernel as pre-release, not as a permanently separate Ubuntu kernel branch.

What Linux 7.3 brings to this release

Canonical presents the kernel choice primarily as hardware enablement. Ubuntu 26.10 is intended to support newer platforms including Intel Xe3P (Nova Lake), AMD Zen 6 and NVIDIA 615 hardware. It also adds out-of-the-box Lustre support, relevant to systems that use the parallel file system for high-throughput data transfer.

That freshness can matter if a new computer is poorly supported by an older kernel. It can also introduce regressions that have had less time to appear across the wider Linux ecosystem. Users should therefore treat “newer hardware support” and “lower deployment risk” as competing priorities rather than assuming the newest kernel is automatically better.

Security, authentication and system changes

Sequoia PGP for APT signatures

Ubuntu 26.10 replaces GnuPG with Sequoia PGP for verifying APT repository signatures. Canonical describes the implementation as post-quantum ready. For users, the visible result is not a new package-management command; it is a change in the cryptographic implementation used when APT checks repository metadata.

Quantum-safe token support

The release adds support for post-quantum algorithms through openCryptoki, including ML-DSA and ML-KEM integration across Soft, EP11 and CCA token types. This is infrastructure for environments that use cryptographic tokens, rather than a desktop switch most people will need to configure manually.

Rust-based core utilities

Ubuntu 26.10 completes the rollout of Rust-based uutils coreutils. These provide replacements for familiar command-line utilities while preserving the commands and everyday workflows administrators already use.

Microsoft Entra ID integration

Authentication integration with Microsoft Entra ID is strengthened, which can simplify identity integration for organizations using that directory service. Exact behavior still depends on the organization’s existing login, policy and device-management setup.

Myna speech-to-text is only a technology preview

Myna, the release’s speech-to-text feature, should not be treated as a finished productivity tool. Independent launch testing found that it failed on an older ThinkPad. On a newer Dell XPS 9370, it worked after the tester switched to a non-GPU language model, but transcription was described as very slow.

No official benchmark establishes a universal speed or accuracy level. Hardware, model selection and whether a usable GPU is available can change the result, so prospective users should test Myna on their own machine before planning a workflow around it.

Should you upgrade from Ubuntu 26.04 LTS?

Priority Better choice Reason
New Intel, AMD or NVIDIA hardware Consider Ubuntu 26.10 Linux 7.3 targets newer silicon, including Intel Xe3P, AMD Zen 6 and NVIDIA 615.
Predictable production systems Stay on the current LTS line Interim releases require more frequent upgrades and carry greater change risk.
Post-quantum cryptography or token work Evaluate Ubuntu 26.10 It includes Sequoia PGP APT verification and openCryptoki support for ML-DSA and ML-KEM.
Speech-to-text as a dependable daily tool Wait or test first Myna is a preview with reported compatibility and performance limitations.

Users who value long-term stability should not upgrade solely because Stonking Stingray is newer. The interim cadence, the release-candidate kernel and the preview status of Myna make it more appropriate for enthusiasts, hardware testers and developers who can recover from regressions. Before changing a working 26.04 LTS installation, verify application compatibility, create a tested backup and confirm that the machine can boot an earlier kernel or restore the previous system if necessary.

Is Ubuntu 26.10 stable enough for daily use?

It can be usable as a daily desktop, but the evidence supports a cautious answer rather than a blanket guarantee. Ubuntu 26.10 is a final Ubuntu release, yet its kernel was still pre-release at launch and its interim support model demands more active maintenance. Kubuntu’s official beta notice stated: “This is a pre-release. It is intended for testing, not production use.” That warning applies especially to beta images and illustrates the broader caution needed around the release cycle.

For a personal system, test the exact hardware, graphics stack, suspend behavior, external displays, VPN or authentication setup and essential applications. For servers, fleets and other systems where downtime is costly, the current LTS line remains the safer default unless a specific 26.10 feature or hardware enablement requirement justifies the additional risk.

What happens after installation

  1. Install Ubuntu 26.10 from the official download page and keep a recovery path for the previous operating system.
  2. Apply the normal Ubuntu updates after the first boot so the system receives any post-release fixes.
  3. Check the running kernel with uname -r and confirm that hardware, graphics and suspend work as expected.
  4. Watch kernel updates closely: Canonical intends systems to move from the release-candidate build to completed Linux 7.3 when that upstream kernel is available.
  5. If a regression appears, select an older installed kernel from the boot menu and report the issue with hardware details and relevant logs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does “Stonking Stingray” mean?

It is the codename for Ubuntu 26.10, Canonical’s interim release published on 15 October 2026.

Will Ubuntu 26.10 receive the final Linux 7.3?

Canonical said installed systems will be updated to the completed 7.3 kernel when it becomes available.
