Choose Steam if one library, Steam checkout, and Steam’s social features matter most. Choose Ubisoft Connect or the Ubisoft Store if you prefer a direct Ubisoft account relationship, Ubisoft’s advertised midnight launch-day readiness, Ubisoft+ access, or Ubisoft’s own refund workflow. A Steam purchase can still involve a Ubisoft account and Ubisoft software, so the store choice does not eliminate account-linking decisions.
What you are actually choosing
For a Ubisoft PC game, the storefront license and the Ubisoft account layer are related but distinct. Steam or another approved retailer records where you bought the game. Ubisoft Connect supplies Ubisoft account services such as friends, chat, rewards, recommendations, and game management. Depending on the title, the game may start through Steam, Ubisoft Connect, or a newer title-specific integration. Ubisoft documents Steam as an approved retailer and provides a process for linking a Steam account to a Ubisoft account.
That separation explains why a Steam purchase can still ask you to sign in to Ubisoft, and why linking accounts does not automatically grant a second storefront license. It also explains why saves, downloadable content, and competitive progression must be checked for the individual game rather than assumed from the store name.

When Steam is the better choice
You want one PC library
If most of your games are already in Steam, buying there keeps installation, updates, controller settings, cloud-related options, screenshots, and friend activity in one interface. This convenience is a legitimate reason to accept an additional Ubisoft sign-in when a title requires it. The Steam library remains the place where you launch and manage the purchase, while Ubisoft services provide the game-specific account layer.

Steam checkout or wallet balance matters
Steam may be preferable when you already maintain a Steam wallet, use Steam’s household purchasing controls, or want the payment records and gifting workflow associated with that storefront. Verify the exact edition, language, downloadable content, and activation restrictions on the listing before paying; an attractive base-game price may not include the expansion bundle you expect.
Your friends and community are on Steam
Steam’s friends, groups, activity feed, achievements, and community discussions can make the platform more convenient for a player whose social circle is already there. These features do not change Ubisoft’s account or cross-progression rules, but they can reduce the friction of coordinating play and finding installation or controller help.
When Ubisoft Connect or the Ubisoft Store is the better choice
You want a direct Ubisoft account relationship
A direct purchase places the transaction inside Ubisoft’s own store and account system. That can simplify finding Ubisoft orders, managing the Ubisoft game library, and handling support through the same account used by Ubisoft Connect. It does not create a universal license for other storefronts: buying directly should be treated as a Ubisoft Store entitlement unless the product page explicitly says otherwise.

Ubisoft’s Store benefits information advertises direct-store games as ready to play at midnight on launch day and says the Ubisoft Connect PC Launcher is required for that flow. “Midnight” should be interpreted according to the release region and the launch instructions for the particular title. If a synchronized Steam launch or a different regional release time matters more, compare the release information shown by both stores before ordering.

You intend to use Ubisoft+
Ubisoft+ is a separate subscription route rather than a side effect of purchasing through Steam. Ubisoft’s support information describes tier-dependent benefits that can include catalog access, cross-platform access in eligible cases, day-one releases or early access when offered, preload on Ubisoft Connect PC, rewards, and discounts. Eligibility, included editions, platforms, and launch timing depend on the subscription tier and the current terms. Check the subscription page for the exact game and plan instead of assuming that every Ubisoft+ tier includes every edition.

What Ubisoft Connect provides
Ubisoft Connect is a free Ubisoft service that requires a Ubisoft account. Ubisoft describes cross-platform chat, friends, rewards, game-library management, Steam-friend import, and personalized recommendations among its features. The service can therefore remain useful even when your license was purchased through Steam.
What to expect after a Steam purchase
At first launch, follow the game’s on-screen instructions to sign in or create the required Ubisoft account and link Steam when prompted. Do not create a second Ubisoft account simply because the first sign-in screen is unfamiliar. A duplicate account can split entitlements, friends, rewards, and progression. If you already own Ubisoft games, identify the account that contains them before completing the link.
Why launch behavior differs
Ubisoft titles do not all use an identical launcher sequence. Some display a Steam launch followed by Ubisoft authentication; others may hand off more visibly to Ubisoft Connect. Refunds: the material difference you can verify
Ubisoft Store and Ubisoft Connect PC purchases
Ubisoft’s current support guidance states that a refund request for a Ubisoft Connect PC or Ubisoft Store purchase must be made within 14 days and while the game has been played for less than two hours. The rule is subject to the applicable refund policy and exclusions, so the product, payment method, territory, or exceptional content can affect eligibility. Keep the order information and submit the request through Ubisoft’s documented support or account workflow.
Steam purchases
This comparison does not establish a Steam refund window. Steam’s terms can change and can vary by product type or circumstance, so read the current Steam Support policy and the purchase terms shown before checkout. Do not assume that Ubisoft’s 14-day and under-two-hour rule applies to a Steam transaction, or that Steam’s policy applies to a direct Ubisoft purchase.
How to choose when refund flexibility matters
If you expect to test performance, controller support, or compatibility immediately after purchase, note which company will process the transaction. Account linking is a prerequisite, not a guarantee
Ubisoft says linking another platform account to a Ubisoft account enables available crossplay and cross-progression features. Steam is explicitly included in the supported linking flow. However, availability depends on the game and the platforms involved. The same Ubisoft account may be required on every platform, and a different account can prevent the expected profile from appearing.

What can transfer
When a title supports cross-progression, the supported profile or progression may be available on another linked platform where the game is owned. The feature may cover campaign progress, online progression, inventory, or settings differently. Competitive ranks, virtual currency, season passes, and other entitlements can have separate restrictions.
What should not be assumed
- Owning a game on Steam does not automatically grant a Ubisoft Store or console license.
- Linking Steam and Ubisoft accounts does not prove that a save will synchronize.
- Downloadable content and deluxe-edition bonuses may be tied to the purchasing platform or edition.
- Crossplay can be available even when cross-progression is not, and vice versa.
Before buying a second copy, open the specific game’s support documentation and look for explicit statements about crossplay, cross-progression, cloud saves, DLC ownership, and platform restrictions. If those details are missing, treat the transfer as unconfirmed rather than guaranteed.
Regional pricing, editions, and approved retailers
Ubisoft lists Steam, Amazon.com, the Ubisoft Store, Epic Games Store, and other retailers among approved worldwide retailers. It recommends using a digital retailer in the buyer’s own country or region. Prices, taxes, currencies, stock, activation territories, language packages, and available editions can change, so compare the final checkout pages rather than relying on an old price seen elsewhere.

Pick Steam when most answers are “yes”
- You want the game beside your existing Steam library.
- You rely on Steam friends, groups, controller configuration, or community tools.
