Choose the UniFi CloudKey+ (UCK-G2-PLUS) if you need the appliance that hosts UniFi Protect, records camera footage locally, and can also run UniFi Network, Access, Talk, and Connect. Choose the UniFi AI Key (AI-Key) if you already have Protect recording and want an edge appliance for smart detections, detailed classifications, and natural-language event search. They are complementary products rather than direct substitutes: CloudKey+ is the console and recorder, while AI Key is an analysis layer.
The distinction matters before you buy. AI Key has a 256 GB SSD and a published workload of up to 1,800 smart detections per hour, but the supplied specifications do not present it as a standalone camera recorder. CloudKey+ includes a user-upgradeable 1 TB 2.5-inch SATA hard drive and publishes camera-capacity figures by resolution. Both keep UniFi security footage local to the console, and Ubiquiti says UniFi has no recurring licensing fees.
Quick decision: which appliance fits your deployment?
| Need | Best fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| A compact UniFi Protect console with local recording | UniFi CloudKey+ (UCK-G2-PLUS) | Hosts Protect and includes a 1 TB, user-upgradeable 2.5-inch SATA HDD. |
| UniFi Network, Protect, Access, Talk, and Connect on one console | UniFi CloudKey+ (UCK-G2-PLUS) | Ubiquiti lists all five applications for CloudKey+. |
| AI detections and natural-language event search for an existing Protect system | UniFi AI Key (AI-Key) | It is an edge-AI enhancement appliance, rated for up to 1,800 smart detections per hour. |
| Both local recording and additional AI analysis | CloudKey+ plus AI Key | This is an architectural combination of their documented roles; verify compatibility with the current Protect release before deployment. |
There is no meaningful “winner” independent of that requirement. Buying AI Key when you still need a Protect recorder leaves a fundamental role unfilled. Buying CloudKey+ when you already have Protect recording but need richer AI analysis may leave the capability you wanted unaddressed.

It adds edge-AI analysis to Protect
Ubiquiti describes AI Key as an edge AI appliance that enhances a UniFi Protect deployment. Its documented functions include smart detections, detailed classifications, and natural-language search. The analysis occurs on the appliance at the edge of your UniFi environment rather than being presented as a replacement for the Protect console.
#1 Best Overall
The AI Key’s technical page lists UniFi Protect as its management application, one 1 GbE RJ45 port, PoE++ power, 16 GB of LPDDR5 memory, and a 256 GB SSD. The published AI workload is up to 1,800 smart detections per hour. That number describes detection processing, not a stated limit on the number of cameras it can record.
It is not documented as a standalone recorder
Nothing in the supplied AI Key specifications assigns it a camera-recording capacity or describes it as the appliance that hosts the complete Protect application stack. Treat it as an AI companion for a system that already has Protect recording. If your project starts with cameras and no Protect console, CloudKey+ addresses that foundational requirement; AI Key does not replace it on the evidence available here.
What the UniFi CloudKey+ does
It is the console and local recorder
CloudKey+ (model UCK-G2-PLUS) is a UniFi console designed for small-to-medium deployments. Ubiquiti lists UniFi Network, Protect, Access, Talk, and Connect as applications it can run. For a camera installation, Protect is the important role: CloudKey+ provides the management environment and local storage for recordings.
The unit includes one 2.5-inch drive bay populated with a 1 TB SATA hard drive. Ubiquiti identifies that drive as user-upgradeable, so storage can be replaced when your retention target, camera mix, or maintenance plan requires more capacity. The supplied material does not specify a maximum replacement-drive size; check the current hardware documentation before purchasing a particular disk.
It can be the only UniFi console in a small site
Because CloudKey+ also runs Network, Access, Talk, and Connect, it can consolidate several UniFi management roles in one appliance. That consolidation is useful when your site needs camera recording together with network administration or another listed UniFi application. It also reduces the need to assign a separate appliance to each of those documented applications.

How the two appliances fit into a camera system
CloudKey+ is the recording path
A CloudKey+-based deployment starts with Protect on the console. Cameras are managed through that Protect environment, and footage is stored on the console’s local 1 TB drive unless you replace it with another compatible 2.5-inch SATA drive. This makes CloudKey+ the natural starting point for a new UniFi camera installation where local recording is required.

An AI-Key-based deployment starts with Protect already operating somewhere in the UniFi system. AI Key then provides the documented AI functions: smart detections, more detailed classifications, and natural-language search of events. Its 256 GB SSD is listed as the AI Key’s on-board storage, but the supplied specifications do not say that this storage is a substitute for the CloudKey+ recording disk.
Why the distinction prevents an expensive mismatch
“Does AI Key replace CloudKey+?” is therefore answered by role: not according to the documented product descriptions. AI Key enhances Protect; CloudKey+ hosts Protect and records locally. If you buy the AI appliance first without an existing Protect console, you still need to establish where camera management and recording will run.
Camera capacity and storage: read the figures in context
CloudKey+ capacity figures differ by official page
Ubiquiti’s CloudKey+ technical specification gives three resolution-based figures: 24 HD, 14 2K, or 8 4K managed cameras. A separate Ubiquiti FAQ describes CloudKey+ as suitable for small-to-medium deployments and says it is capable of up to 20 HD cameras or 7 4K cameras. These are both official statements, but they appear in different page contexts. Do not combine them into a single blended limit or assume that the higher figure applies to every workload.
Use the technical-specification figures when you are comparing the published resolution tiers directly. Use the FAQ figures when you are evaluating the FAQ’s small-to-medium deployment guidance. For a real installation, camera resolution, recording settings, retention, and current Protect software can affect the practical result; confirm the current calculator or compatibility guidance before committing to a camera count.

AI Key has a detection workload, not a camera count
AI Key is specified at up to 1,800 smart detections per hour. That is an AI-processing measure, not an equivalent to “eight 4K cameras” or another recording tier. The supplied material does not establish an AI-Key camera limit, retention period, or recording capacity, so those values should not be guessed from the 1,800-per-hour figure.
Storage roles are different
CloudKey+ ships with a 1 TB 2.5-inch SATA HDD that the user can upgrade. AI Key lists a 256 GB SSD. The difference is not simply “large drive versus small drive”; each product’s documented job is different. CloudKey+ uses its drive as the local recorder’s storage foundation, while AI Key’s storage is listed alongside its edge-analysis hardware. Plan retention around the recorder’s drive, and treat the AI Key SSD as part of the AI appliance rather than as evidence that it replaces a recording archive.
Power and network requirements
AI Key requires PoE++
AI Key has one 1 GbE RJ45 port and requires PoE++ in the 50–57 V range. Your installation therefore needs a PoE++ switch port or a compatible PoE++ injector that can supply that voltage range. Ordinary power-over-Ethernet equipment should not be assumed to meet the requirement simply because it uses an RJ45 connector. Check the switch or injector specification before mounting the appliance.
CloudKey+ is more flexible about power
CloudKey+ has one GbE PoE interface. Ubiquiti also lists an optional 9 V USB-C quick-charge adapter, giving you a non-PoE power path when the network switch does not provide PoE. That makes CloudKey+ easier to place in a small network cabinet or office where a suitable USB-C power adapter is available, while AI Key specifically calls for PoE++.

Physical size and placement
AI Key is listed at 134.2 × 131.2 × 33.7 mm and 635 g. CloudKey+ is listed at 131.2 × 27.1 × 134.2 mm and 582 g. The dimensions are presented in the order used by Ubiquiti’s respective technical pages; allow clearance for the chosen mounting orientation, cable bend, and access to the storage bay before final installation. The AI Key is slightly heavier according to those listed weights, while CloudKey+ is the thinner unit in its published dimensions.
Software, privacy, and recurring fees
Applications available on CloudKey+
CloudKey+ is listed with Network, Protect, Access, Talk, and Connect. If your site needs more than cameras, that application coverage can be a decisive advantage because one console can host the documented UniFi services together.
AI Key’s documented application scope
AI Key’s technical page lists UniFi Protect as its management application. Its purpose is narrower by design: add AI analysis to Protect rather than serve as a general UniFi application host.

Local footage and no recurring license
Ubiquiti’s UniFi Physical Security FAQ states that UniFi has no licensing fees and that the company’s goal is to provide the security solution “without any hidden or recurring fees.” The same FAQ says security footage remains local to the UniFi Console, with remote access through Site Manager or the Protect mobile app. This addresses the common question “Can CloudKey+ run UniFi Protect without a subscription?”: Ubiquiti’s stated model does not require a recurring licensing fee for that Protect use. Internet access and remote-access behavior can still depend on your network and account configuration.

Choose CloudKey+ when these conditions apply
You are building a new UniFi camera system
Start with CloudKey+ when you need the console that manages Protect and stores recordings locally. Its included 1 TB drive gives you a defined starting point, and the user-upgradeable bay gives you a storage path beyond the shipped drive.
You need several UniFi applications
CloudKey+ is the better fit when cameras are only one part of the site and you also need Network, Access, Talk, or Connect. Those applications are explicitly listed for the model; AI Key is not documented as their host.
You want a simpler power option
If your location lacks PoE++, CloudKey+ can use GbE PoE or the optional 9 V USB-C quick-charge adapter. AI Key’s PoE++ requirement makes the power design more specific.

Protect recording already exists
AI Key makes sense when a Protect deployment is already recording and you want to add edge-based smart detections, detailed classifications, or natural-language event search. You are buying analysis capability rather than replacing the console and recorder.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Your priority is event discovery
The 1,800 smart-detections-per-hour figure and the listed classification and natural-language features point to a workload centered on finding and understanding events. If faster event triage is more important than adding storage or another UniFi application, AI Key addresses that stated need.
You can provide PoE++
Plan a PoE++ switch port or injector before ordering AI Key. The 50–57 V requirement is part of the technical specification, not an optional accessory detail.
When using both may be appropriate
A site that needs CloudKey+’s console and recording role plus AI Key’s analysis role may use both appliances. This is an architectural inference from Ubiquiti’s documented descriptions, not a universal compatibility guarantee. Before deployment, verify that the current Protect release supports the intended AI Key pairing, supported camera models, and your planned software versions.
Design the system in two layers: CloudKey+ provides Protect management and local recording on its 1 TB or upgraded drive; AI Key provides the additional AI workload. Keep the roles separate when planning storage, power, network ports, and troubleshooting. If recordings work but AI search does not, investigate the AI layer and its Protect integration rather than replacing the recorder. If cameras cannot be managed or retained at all, verify the CloudKey+ and Protect foundation first.
Installation planning checklist
- Define the required role. Decide whether you need a Protect recorder and multi-application console, AI analysis for an existing Protect system, or both.
- Count cameras by resolution. For CloudKey+, compare your design with the published 24 HD/14 2K/8 4K technical-specification figures and separately note the FAQ’s 20 HD/7 4K guidance. Do not treat the two contexts as one combined limit.
- Plan storage retention. CloudKey+ includes a user-upgradeable 1 TB 2.5-inch SATA HDD. AI Key lists a 256 GB SSD but no recording-capacity figure.
- Confirm power before mounting. Provide PoE++ at 50–57 V for AI Key. For CloudKey+, provide GbE PoE or the optional 9 V USB-C quick-charge adapter.
- Reserve network connectivity. Each appliance has one GbE-class Ethernet interface; ensure the selected switch port and cabling are available where the unit will live.
- Verify current software compatibility. This is especially important when combining CloudKey+ and AI Key, because the documented product roles do not by themselves guarantee compatibility with every Protect release.
- Set remote-access expectations. Footage is described as local to the UniFi Console, while remote access is provided through Site Manager or the Protect mobile app according to Ubiquiti’s FAQ.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistaking AI throughput for recording capacity
“1,800 detections per hour” is not a promise that AI Key records a certain number of cameras. Keep that figure in the AI-processing column of your design and obtain a separate, current statement if you need recording limits.
Assuming every CloudKey+ capacity number is interchangeable
The technical page and FAQ publish different camera figures. Record which page context you used, and validate your actual camera mix instead of advertising one number as the universal maximum.
Buying AI Key without a Protect host
AI Key is described as enhancing an existing Protect deployment. If no Protect console or recorder is present, choose the appliance that supplies that role first, normally CloudKey+ for the documented use case.
Using the wrong PoE class
AI Key calls for PoE++ at 50–57 V. A basic PoE port is not automatically sufficient. Confirm the switch or injector’s PoE++ rating before installation.
Expecting a subscription bill for basic Protect operation
Ubiquiti’s FAQ says UniFi has no licensing fees and no hidden or recurring fees, with footage remaining local to the console. That statement does not remove the need for compatible hardware, storage, network connectivity, or any separately purchased accessories.
Bottom line for most buyers
For a new or expanding UniFi camera installation, CloudKey+ is the foundational choice: it hosts Protect, records locally to an included upgradeable 1 TB drive, and can run four other listed UniFi applications. For an existing Protect system whose priority is richer event analysis, AI Key is the focused add-on, with edge detections, classifications, natural-language search, and a stated capacity of up to 1,800 smart detections per hour. Only choose both after confirming current Protect compatibility and planning separate recording, AI-processing, and PoE++ requirements.
