For annual periods beginning after December 15, 2024, qualifying Bitcoin holdings under U.S. GAAP are carried at fair value every reporting period, with changes in net income. Under IFRS, an ordinary corporate holder generally accounts for Bitcoin as an IAS 38 intangible asset using either the cost model or, when the required conditions are met, the revaluation model; a broker-trader may instead apply IAS 2 inventory guidance.

|---|---|---|---|
| Primary classification | Dedicated crypto-asset guidance in FASB Subtopic 350-60 for qualifying assets such as Bitcoin | IAS 38 intangible asset | IAS 2 inventory when cryptocurrency is held in the ordinary course of business as a broker-trader |

| Effect of an unrealized price increase | Gain in net income in the period of remeasurement | Cost model: no upward remeasurement; revaluation model: generally other comprehensive income and revaluation surplus | Follows the applicable IAS 2 inventory model |
| Effect of an unrealized price decrease | Loss in net income in the period of remeasurement | Cost model: impairment rules apply; revaluation model: generally profit or loss unless an existing revaluation surplus is reversed | Follows the applicable IAS 2 inventory model |
| Balance-sheet presentation | Presented separately from other intangible assets | Included with intangible assets and described under IAS 38 disclosures | Presented as inventory |
| Transition or policy basis | ASU 2023-08 uses a cumulative-effect adjustment to opening retained earnings; early adoption is permitted | Existing IAS 38 policy and the applicable IFRS transition requirements | Existing IAS 2 policy and the applicable IFRS transition requirements |
| Key disclosure framework | Crypto-specific annual and interim disclosures, including units, cost basis, fair value and activity | IAS 38 disclosures, plus IFRS 13 disclosures when fair value is used or otherwise required | IAS 2 and IFRS 13 disclosures as applicable |
The central practical difference is where an unrealized market movement appears. U.S. GAAP sends each period’s fair-value movement to earnings. IFRS gives an ordinary holder a measurement-policy choice within IAS 38, so a cost-model balance sheet does not report an upward Bitcoin price movement and a qualifying revaluation model generally reports increases in other comprehensive income rather than profit.
U.S. GAAP: a dedicated fair-value model
Who is in scope
FASB Accounting Standards Update 2023-08 added Subtopic 350-60 for qualifying crypto assets. Bitcoin is the principal example relevant to corporate balance sheets, but the accounting team still has to document that each asset meets the standard’s scope requirements. The analysis should be performed by asset and by legal ownership, not by assuming that every digital token receives identical treatment.
Holdings owned for the company’s own account are different from crypto-assets safeguarded for customers. Customer-asset responsibilities raise a separate presentation and measurement question addressed for SEC registrants by Staff Accounting Bulletin 121, discussed later in this article.

Measurement and balance-sheet presentation
For an in-scope asset, the company measures Bitcoin at fair value in the statement of financial position at every reporting date. The asset is shown separately from other intangible assets, so readers can identify the crypto balance rather than having it disappear inside a broad indefinite-lived-intangible line.
Fair value is determined using the fair-value framework in ASC 820. The company should identify the principal market for the asset, select a valuation approach consistent with that market, and retain evidence for the observable and unobservable inputs used. A quoted exchange price is not automatically the correct answer if the company’s principal market, access rights, settlement terms or restrictions differ from the market being observed.
Where unrealized gains and losses go
ASU 2023-08 requires changes from remeasurement to be recognized in net income. A rise in Bitcoin’s fair value therefore increases current-period earnings even if the company has not sold any coins. A decline decreases current-period earnings on the same basis. The result is recurring earnings volatility tied to the reporting-date price, the units held and the valuation market selected under ASC 820.
This treatment affects more than the income statement. The fair-value carrying amount changes each reporting period, retained earnings ultimately reflects the accumulated earnings effect, and management reporting should distinguish market remeasurement from realized disposals, operating results and cash flows.
Effective date and adoption
FASB issued ASU 2023-08 on December 13, 2023. The amendments apply for annual periods beginning after December 15, 2024, including interim periods within those annual periods. An entity may adopt early.
Adoption is recorded through a cumulative-effect adjustment to opening retained earnings. The implementation file should therefore show the pre-adoption carrying amount, the fair value used on the adoption date, the related tax effects where applicable, and the resulting opening-equity entry. The entry is not a current-period trading gain or loss; it is the transition mechanism required by the update.
What companies did before the update
Before Subtopic 350-60, U.S. GAAP generally treated Bitcoin as an indefinite-lived intangible asset carried at cost less impairment. When the market price fell below carrying amount, an impairment loss reduced the carrying amount. When the price later rose, the increase was not recognized until disposal. That model could leave the balance sheet below current market value and could not reverse an earlier impairment through an upward remeasurement.

IFRS: IAS 38 is the starting point
Why ordinary holdings are intangible assets
In 2019, the IFRS Interpretations Committee concluded that a cryptocurrency holding generally meets the IAS 38 definition of an intangible asset. The reasoning is that the holding is separable: it can be sold or transferred individually. It also does not give the holder a right to receive a fixed or determinable number of units of currency. Bitcoin held for investment, treasury or another corporate purpose therefore normally enters the IAS 38 analysis rather than a special crypto standard.
Classification is not determined solely by the fact that Bitcoin trades on exchanges. Management must consider the purpose and ordinary course of the entity’s business. The broker-trader exception can change the answer, as described below.
Cost model
Under the IAS 38 cost model, Bitcoin remains at its cost less accumulated amortization and impairment, as applicable to the useful-life assessment. An upward market movement does not increase the carrying amount. The company recognizes an impairment loss when the asset’s recoverable amount is below its carrying amount, applying the relevant IFRS impairment requirements.
IAS 38 requires an entity to assess whether the useful life is finite or indefinite and to disclose that judgment. A finite-life asset is amortized over its useful life; an indefinite-life asset is not amortized while the life remains indefinite but is subject to impairment testing under the applicable IFRS requirements. The useful-life conclusion, the reasons supporting it and any change in that conclusion belong in the financial-statement disclosures.
Revaluation model
IAS 38 also permits a revaluation model when the required conditions are met, including the ability to measure fair value reliably by reference to an active market. The policy must be applied consistently to the relevant class of intangible assets rather than selected opportunistically for one favorable reporting date.
A revaluation increase generally goes to other comprehensive income and accumulates in a revaluation surplus within equity. The increase goes to profit or loss only to the extent that it reverses a previous revaluation decrease recognized in profit or loss. A revaluation decrease generally goes to profit or loss, except to the extent that an existing surplus for that asset can absorb it through other comprehensive income.
Because an active market is a condition of the IAS 38 revaluation model, a company cannot simply choose revaluation because Bitcoin has a visible quoted price. It must document why the relevant market is active, accessible to the entity and representative of the asset being measured. IFRS 13 supplies the fair-value measurement and disclosure framework when fair value is used.

Broker-trader exception
The IFRS Interpretations Committee’s 2019 agenda decision identified an exception for a broker-trader that holds cryptocurrency in the ordinary course of its business. Such an entity may apply IAS 2 inventory guidance instead of IAS 38. The business model, not the label attached to the wallet, drives this conclusion. A treasury investment by a manufacturing company is not transformed into inventory merely because the company can sell it quickly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBroker-traders should document the ordinary-course activity, the role of the holdings in customer or trading transactions and the inventory policy selected under IAS 2. That documentation supports both classification and the related disclosures.
IFRS 13 considerations
When an IFRS reporter uses a revaluation model or another requirement calls for fair value, IFRS 13 governs how fair value is measured and disclosed. The notes should explain the valuation technique, the significant inputs and the level of market observability required by IFRS 13. Those disclosures complement, rather than replace, the IAS 38 policy, useful-life and revaluation disclosures.
How the same Bitcoin price move appears in the accounts
The following illustration uses a hypothetical company that buys one Bitcoin holding for $1,000,000 and reports a $1,600,000 fair value at year-end. The figures are examples to show presentation mechanics, not a forecast or a prescribed journal entry for every fact pattern.
| Illustrative year-end outcome | U.S. GAAP after ASU 2023-08 | IFRS cost model | IFRS revaluation model, if eligible |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carrying amount | $1,600,000 fair value | $1,000,000 cost, before any impairment or other adjustments | $1,600,000 revalued amount |
| Current-period increase | $600,000 gain in net income | No upward remeasurement | $600,000 generally in other comprehensive income and revaluation surplus |
| Balance-sheet category | Separate crypto-asset presentation | IAS 38 intangible assets | IAS 38 intangible assets |
| What the notes must explain | Units, cost basis, fair value and activity, plus valuation and risk information | Cost-model policy, useful-life conclusion and impairment information | Revaluation policy, movements in surplus, useful-life information and IFRS 13 fair-value details |
If the year-end price instead falls, the U.S. GAAP loss is still recognized in net income. Under IFRS, the result depends on the selected model and the asset’s existing balances: a cost-model holder considers impairment, while a revaluation-model holder applies the order of recognition between profit or loss and any existing revaluation surplus.

Earnings volatility under U.S. GAAP
Because every reporting-date change enters net income, an operating company can show a large swing in earnings without selling Bitcoin or receiving cash. Analysts comparing periods should separate the crypto remeasurement line from recurring operating performance and identify the number of units held at each date. A disposal does not eliminate the earlier remeasurement history; it simply turns the holding into a transaction whose gain or loss is measured against the carrying amount at disposal.
Equity presentation under IFRS revaluation
An IFRS revaluation increase generally bypasses profit or loss and accumulates in other comprehensive income and revaluation surplus. That can produce a higher asset balance and higher equity without the same increase in net income that U.S. GAAP reports. Later decreases must be tracked against the surplus, because the surplus determines whether a subsequent decrease is reported in other comprehensive income or profit or loss.

Comparability cautions
Two companies holding the same number of Bitcoin can report different assets, earnings and equity because one follows U.S. GAAP and the other follows an IFRS cost or revaluation policy. Comparisons should identify the reporting framework, measurement model, reporting date, units held, principal market and any restrictions before treating a balance or margin as economically equivalent.
Disclosure requirements companies need to plan for
U.S. GAAP disclosures
ASU 2023-08 adds enhanced annual and interim disclosures for significant crypto holdings. The notes should identify each significant asset, the units held, the cost basis, the fair value and the activity rollforward. The rollforward helps a reader reconcile opening and closing units and understand purchases, sales, transfers and other activity during the period.

The accounting policy should also explain how the company determines fair value under ASC 820. That includes the principal market, the valuation inputs, the treatment of any restrictions and the controls used to ensure that the market data matches the company’s actual holdings. Concentration and liquidity risks should be described when they are material, particularly where a large position could not be liquidated at the observed quoted price without affecting the market.
IFRS disclosures for an IAS 38 holder
An IFRS holder should disclose whether it uses the cost model or revaluation model, the useful-life assessment, the gross carrying amount and accumulated amortization or impairment where relevant, and the movements during the period. A revaluation-model holder also explains the date of the revaluation, the method used, the resulting surplus and the effect of any decreases or reversals.
IFRS 13 disclosures are added when fair value is used or otherwise required. The notes should make the valuation technique and significant inputs understandable, including the degree to which prices are observable and the market selected for the measurement.
Interim reporting
U.S. GAAP’s crypto-specific requirements apply to interim periods within the affected annual periods, not only to the year-end report. A quarterly close therefore needs the same disciplined unit reconciliation, valuation evidence and activity tracking as the annual close, scaled to the interim reporting timetable.

Controls for a reliable Bitcoin close
- Confirm legal ownership. Separate company-owned Bitcoin from assets held for customers, counterparties or another party. Record the legal entity, wallet or custodian and the rights attached to each balance.
- Reconcile units. Reconcile blockchain or custodian records to the general ledger at each reporting date. Investigate transfers, forks, fees, staking-related movements and timing differences before calculating the carrying amount.
- Document classification. For U.S. GAAP, retain the scope analysis supporting Subtopic 350-60. For IFRS, document why the holding is an IAS 38 intangible or, for a broker-trader, IAS 2 inventory.
- Identify the market. Record the principal market used under ASC 820 or the active-market analysis required for an IAS 38 revaluation. Explain why the quoted price is accessible to the company and appropriate for the asset and restrictions held.
- Calculate the measurement. Multiply verified units by the supported reporting-date price, then account for transaction costs, restrictions and other facts required by the applicable framework. Preserve the source, timestamp and approval for the price used.
- Post to the correct location. Under U.S. GAAP, post the remeasurement to net income. Under IFRS, follow the cost-model impairment analysis or the revaluation rules for profit or loss, other comprehensive income and revaluation surplus.
- Prepare the rollforward. Tie opening units and carrying amounts to additions, disposals, transfers, remeasurement, impairment and closing balances. The rollforward should agree to custody records and the financial statements.
- Review disclosures. Have accounting, treasury, legal, tax and risk teams review asset names, units, valuation methods, concentration, liquidity, custody and policy disclosures before filing.
Customer-asset custody is a separate accounting question
A platform that safeguards crypto-assets for users may have an accounting obligation that is different from accounting for Bitcoin it owns. SEC Staff Accounting Bulletin 121 discusses recognizing a safeguarding liability and a corresponding fair-value measurement when a reporting entity is responsible for crypto-assets held for platform users.

The custody analysis should therefore begin with the customer contract, control rights, ability to use or rehypothecate the assets, loss responsibility and operational safeguards. Do not net customer wallets against corporate holdings or assume that the company’s own-asset policy answers the safeguarding question. The relevant conclusion, measurement and disclosure should be documented separately.
Common implementation mistakes and how to correct them
Using the old impairment model after the effective date
A company that continues carrying qualifying Bitcoin at cost less impairment after its first required ASU 2023-08 period is using a superseded model. Reperform the scope assessment, calculate the adoption-date fair value, record the cumulative-effect opening-retained-earnings adjustment and update interim procedures.
Sending an IFRS revaluation increase to profit or loss by default
For an eligible IAS 38 revaluation, an increase generally belongs in other comprehensive income and revaluation surplus, not current earnings. Check whether a prior decrease was recognized in profit or loss before determining the destination of the increase.
Recommended Free Tools
Assuming a quoted exchange price proves an active market
IAS 38’s revaluation model requires the relevant conditions, including an active market. Under either framework, a valuation file should show market access, principal-market selection, restrictions and the relationship between the quoted instrument and the company’s actual holding.
Omitting interim activity
Quarterly transactions can make the closing unit count differ materially from the annual opening balance. Keep the activity rollforward current throughout the year instead of reconstructing it at year-end.
Combining owned and customer assets
Separate wallets, custodial contracts, ledgers and disclosures for corporate holdings and customer assets. The safeguarding guidance for an SEC registrant does not replace the accounting analysis for Bitcoin owned by the reporting entity.
Describing fair value without explaining uncertainty
A single price in the notes is not enough when liquidity, concentration or market access could affect the amount realized. Explain the principal market, material inputs and risks so readers can understand why the reported fair value may differ from a price seen on another venue.
A practical decision path for finance teams
- Start with the reporting framework. Determine whether the financial statements are prepared under U.S. GAAP or IFRS and identify the first reporting period affected by the applicable guidance.
- Map the holdings. List Bitcoin and other digital assets by legal owner, units, custodian, wallet, acquisition date, cost basis and intended use.
- Apply the classification test. Use Subtopic 350-60 for qualifying U.S. GAAP crypto assets. Under IFRS, apply IAS 38 unless the entity is a broker-trader whose ordinary-course holdings fall under IAS 2.
- Select or confirm measurement. U.S. GAAP requires fair value. IFRS requires a documented IAS 38 cost or qualifying revaluation policy, applied consistently to the relevant class.
- Determine the income or equity route. Map each price movement to U.S. GAAP net income or to the IFRS cost-model impairment and revaluation-model profit-or-loss/OCI rules.
- Build the evidence package. Retain ownership records, unit reconciliations, market and valuation support, approval controls, transition calculations and disclosure rollforwards.
- Coordinate filing and audit teams. Resolve classification, principal-market, active-market, custody and disclosure questions before the close, rather than treating them as note drafting issues after the trial balance is final.
Bottom line
U.S. GAAP and IFRS can produce materially different Bitcoin balances and earnings even when the underlying coins are identical. Since the periods beginning after December 15, 2024, U.S. GAAP’s Subtopic 350-60 requires qualifying holdings to be remeasured at fair value with changes in net income and shown separately from other intangible assets. IFRS generally places an ordinary corporate holding in IAS 38, where the cost model suppresses upward price movements and an eligible revaluation model generally routes increases through other comprehensive income. Correct classification, market evidence, unit controls, transition accounting and framework-specific disclosures are essential to making those differences understandable to investors.
