The U.S. Army has completed its first helicopter test flights of the Advanced Inflight Relief Universal System (AIRUS), a wearable in-flight urination system intended to let pilots relieve themselves without landing. Crews from the 101st Combat Aviation Brigade evaluated AIRUS in AH-64 Apache, UH-60 Black Hawk and CH-47 Chinook helicopters at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, from October 5–7, 2026.

The flights were an airworthiness and human-factors evaluation—not an announcement that AIRUS has been fielded across the Army. The testing examined fit, comfort, egress, cockpit integration and whether crews could use the system during flight.

Why helicopter pilots need an in-flight relief option

Long missions can make restroom access impossible. The Army says pilots have responded by limiting their fluid intake, a practice its Holistic Health and Fitness team calls “tactical dehydration.” Capt. Gena Baisa, the 101st CAB’s lead dietitian, said, “We had pilots tell us they tactically dehydrate.”

Deliberately drinking less can make hydration and sustained performance harder during demanding flights. The stated purpose of AIRUS is to give crews another option: stay hydrated, avoid an urgent diversion or landing, and reduce the distraction associated with needing a restroom during a prolonged mission.

What the 2026 Army evaluation tested

The 101st Combat Aviation Brigade used crews from three battalions: the 1-101 Attack Battalion, 6-101 Assault Helicopter Battalion and 7-101 Heavy Lift Battalion. The aircraft represented three major Army helicopter families:

Helicopter Mission category represented Evaluation focus
AH-64 Apache Attack helicopter Fit, cockpit use, human factors and safe egress
UH-60 Black Hawk Assault and utility helicopter Fit, integration and use during flight
CH-47 Chinook Heavy-lift helicopter Fit, integration and egress considerations

Participants completed human-factors surveys, checked how the equipment fit, considered whether it could interfere with emergency exit procedures and attempted to use it in flight. The publicly described activity establishes a developmental assessment, not a published operational success rate. The Army has not released a sample size, performance percentage or independent test result.

How AIRUS differs from older relief bags

AIRUS is identified as a product from AIRION Health. The Army’s account contrasts it with earlier systems that were essentially disposable bags containing coagulant. Chief Warrant Officer 2 Collin McAllister, an AH-64 pilot who tested AIRUS, said, “It’s different than the previous systems, which were just bags with coagulant inside of them.”

The available reporting does not publish a complete technical specification, such as capacity, attachment method, cleaning procedure, materials or replacement schedule. Those details matter because a system used in a cockpit must manage containment and sanitation while remaining compatible with harnesses, controls and emergency procedures.

What had to work inside three helicopter cockpits

A wearable relief device cannot be judged only by whether it collects urine. The evaluation had to address several practical constraints that vary by aircraft and crew member:

  • Body fit: The system must remain usable across different body types and flight clothing configurations.
  • Control access: It cannot obstruct flight controls, sensors, restraints or other cockpit equipment.
  • Egress: Pilots must be able to exit rapidly in an emergency, with no component creating a snag or delay.
  • Comfort and concentration: A device that causes pressure, leakage risk or discomfort could create a new distraction.
  • Sanitation and maintenance: Units must be cleaned, serviced or replaced in a way that is practical for aviation operations.
  • Airworthiness: The Army must determine whether installation and use meet applicable flight-safety requirements.

AIRION founder and chief executive Colt Seman said the company “tested to get the system integrated into the Apache, Black Hawk, and Chinook helicopters.” That statement describes the integration effort; it does not establish Army approval or fleet-wide compatibility beyond the aircraft involved in the evaluation.

Does the test mean Army pilots can now use AIRUS?

Not necessarily. The October 2026 flights were described as the Army’s first helicopter AIRUS tests and as an airworthiness and human-factors evaluation. The reports do not confirm an Army-wide fielding decision, a procurement contract, standard equipment status or a deployment timetable.

They also do not provide a public price, commercial retail availability or evidence that AIRUS is listed through a general online marketplace. Any unit-level or personal purchase decision would require an official source and verification that the product is authorized and compatible with the specific aircraft and flight equipment.

What is known about AIRION’s other claimed work

The Army article reports AIRION’s claims of work connected with Boeing Starliner and the International Space Station team. Those are company statements as reported by the Army, not independent certification of AIRUS for Army helicopters or proof of a particular performance level in spaceflight.

What happens next

Before a developmental system becomes standard equipment, Army aviation authorities would need to resolve the evaluation findings and determine whether the benefits justify training, logistics, maintenance and procurement requirements. Important unanswered questions include:

  • Whether the system passes all aircraft-specific airworthiness and emergency-egress requirements.
  • How crews clean, service, dispose of or replace components during extended operations.
  • Whether comfort and fit remain acceptable across mission durations, flight suits and body types.
  • What training and medical or hygiene guidance would accompany fielding.
  • Whether the Army authorizes procurement and, if so, for which units and aircraft.

Until those decisions are published, AIRUS should be understood as a promising test item rather than a confirmed Army standard.
