U Mobile and HLGY Energy Sdn Bhd signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 12 October 2026 to explore smart solar-farm operations in Malaysia. The proposal combines U Mobile’s ULTRA5G private connectivity with artificial intelligence and industrial automation, with the Kedah Rubber City Solar Power Plant named as the expected first deployment site. It is a framework for development, not confirmation of a funded nationwide rollout.
What U Mobile and HLGY Energy announced
U Mobile said the partnership will develop next-generation smart solar-farm solutions for HLGY Energy’s renewable-energy portfolio. U Mobile is described as the innovation, automation and communications-infrastructure provider, while HLGY contributes utility-scale solar development and integrated-energy expertise.
HLGY Energy is a Malaysian renewable-energy developer working on utility-scale solar and integrated-energy projects under Malaysia’s Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme (CRESS). The companies said they intend to apply private 5G, AI and automation to make solar assets safer, more efficient and increasingly autonomous.
Because the agreement is an MoU and explicitly non-binding, it does not by itself establish a construction contract, financing commitment, operating timetable or nationwide network deployment.

How the proposed smart solar farm would work
Private 5G as the operational network
U Mobile’s ULTRA5G private network is intended to provide the communications backbone for equipment and monitoring systems across a solar facility. A private network can give an operator controlled connectivity for cameras, sensors, drones and field equipment instead of relying solely on consumer mobile service or disconnected point-to-point links.
The partners have not disclosed the planned radio architecture, spectrum arrangement, coverage area, edge-computing design or how the private network would connect with HLGY’s existing supervisory and monitoring equipment. Those details will determine how the concept performs in large, remote sites.

Autonomous drone inspections
The named applications include autonomous drone inspections. Drones could collect visual or thermal imagery of panels, inverters, cabling and other equipment, allowing software to identify faults or abnormal conditions without sending technicians across every row. The announcement does not specify the drone models, flight frequency, navigation system, inspection accuracy or whether flights will be fully autonomous or remotely supervised.

AI-powered analytics and smart CCTV surveillance are also part of the proposed system. These tools could combine camera feeds, inspection imagery and equipment data to flag damaged modules, security incidents, vegetation encroachment or other conditions requiring attention. The companies have not published performance targets, datasets, alert thresholds or a production deployment date.

Remote monitoring and battery storage
Remote monitoring is intended to give operators a continuous view of solar-generation assets. HLGY’s statement also links AI integration to solar generation and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) operations. In that model, software could help decide when electricity should be stored or supplied, potentially reducing electricity costs and limiting unnecessary battery cycling. HLGY says this approach could also extend equipment life; no quantified savings, battery chemistry, storage size or measured lifetime improvement has been disclosed.
Where the first deployment is expected
The Kedah Rubber City Solar Power Plant is specifically identified as the site where the 5G monitoring system is expected to be deployed. “Across Malaysia” refers to the intended scope of HLGY’s project portfolio, not evidence that every HLGY site is already connected or that a national rollout has been approved.

Neither company has announced a commissioning date for the Kedah deployment. The public descriptions do not establish whether the first phase will be a limited pilot, a full-site installation or a staged test of particular use cases such as surveillance or drone inspection.

U Mobile’s enterprise strategy
For U Mobile, the project takes ULTRA5G beyond consumer connectivity into enterprise infrastructure and industrial automation. A solar farm offers a demanding environment: wide outdoor areas, distributed equipment, repetitive inspection work and a need for rapid detection of faults or security events. Demonstrating reliable private connectivity there could support future industrial deployments if the pilot produces measurable operational benefits.

HLGY’s renewable-energy operations
For HLGY, the proposal tests whether communications, AI and automation can improve the day-to-day management of utility-scale renewable assets. Faster inspections and more coordinated control of generation and storage could help operators reduce unnecessary site visits and respond to failures earlier, although those benefits remain objectives rather than results reported from an operating installation.
Malaysia’s CRESS opportunities
The companies position the initiative within Malaysia’s green-energy transition and CRESS-related development opportunities. Smart operations may become more important as developers manage larger portfolios, combine solar generation with storage and serve commercial energy users. The MoU does not, however, announce a specific CRESS award, power-purchase agreement or financing package.

- Site-level deployment evidence: Look for confirmation that the Kedah Rubber City Solar Power Plant has received private-5G equipment and which functions are active.
- Operational metrics: Useful follow-up disclosures would include inspection coverage, fault-detection accuracy, response times, network availability, avoided site visits and measurable BESS cost or lifetime effects.
- System integration: The partners will need to explain how cameras, drones, sensors, inverters, energy-management software and storage controls exchange data securely.
- Commercial scale: A move from MoU to pilot, procurement agreement or funded rollout would establish a firmer commitment than the current announcement.
- Portfolio expansion: Additional Malaysian sites would show whether the approach is repeatable beyond the named Kedah project.

U Mobile and HLGY Energy have announced a credible technology direction—private 5G supporting AI-assisted inspection, surveillance, remote monitoring and battery-storage management—but the project remains exploratory.
