The U.K. economy is expanding faster than the bleakest forecasts suggested, but the evidence points to steady, service-led growth rather than a sudden productivity boom. Real GDP rose 0.5% in 2026 Q2 after 0.6% in Q1, while business investment and growing AI use provide plausible support without yet proving that AI accounts for a measurable share of GDP growth.
What the latest figures actually show
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) estimates that real GDP increased 0.5% in the second quarter of 2026, following 0.6% growth in the first quarter. In its latest Q2 bulletin, the ONS also revised total 2025 growth to 1.2%.
A separate monthly measure shows continued momentum: output grew 0.7% in the three months to August 2026. Services increased 0.9% over that period, while production fell 0.2%. The rolling three-month figure and quarterly GDP measure cover different periods, so they should not be treated as identical growth rates. Together, they indicate that services are currently carrying the expansion while production remains a drag.
“Defies gloomy predictions” therefore means realised output has been better than the most pessimistic narrative. It does not mean that household living standards, productivity or every region of the country have surged.

Why services and investment are doing most of the work
Services are the main source of measured momentum
The ONS data put services at the centre of the recent improvement. Their 0.9% rise in the three months to August more than offset the 0.2% decline in production. That mix matters: a services-led recovery can keep headline GDP growing even when factories and other production businesses are under pressure, but it may feel uneven across workers and communities.
Firms are still adding productive capital
Business investment was 2.7% higher in the year to 2025 Q3, with information and communications technology (ICT) and machinery providing the main lift. Bank of England contacts reported that some companies were planning automation and AI spending instead of increasing headcount. Those decisions can raise output per worker if the new systems are implemented effectively, although an investment increase is not the same as a guaranteed productivity gain.

How the results compare with forecasts
The International Monetary Fund recorded 1.4% U.K. growth in 2025 and projected 1.0% for 2026. Its assessment describes the economy as resilient but exposed to shocks. The IMF stated in July 2026: “The UK economy has remained resilient, but the war in the Middle East has dampened near-term growth prospects.”
The comparison is between an observed outturn and a conditional forecast. Forecasts are revised as new data arrive, and a forecast of 1.0% for a full year can coexist with stronger-than-expected quarters early in that year. The recent numbers challenge an especially gloomy reading of the outlook, not every cautious projection.

Where AI enters the economic story
AI is visible in company behaviour, investment plans and adoption statistics, but those indicators are not yet a quantified GDP contribution.

ONS adoption figures show use, not the value of the output created or the number of jobs changed. Large firms can adopt first because they have more data, specialist staff and capital; their gains may appear in aggregate statistics before smaller companies use the technology widely.

How much of GDP growth comes from AI?
There is no definitive official percentage yet. ONS is developing a thematic account to estimate AI’s economic effects and has warned that measurement systems must catch up with rapidly changing intangible capital. The agency says: “AI is making material and rapid changes to the nature of intangible capital in the economy and is resulting in fundamental changes to the nature of work and drivers of GDP.”
That measurement problem is practical, not merely semantic. Software, data, models, training and organisational changes may be spread across existing investment categories, while improvements such as faster drafting or customer support can be difficult to separate from ordinary productivity changes. Until the thematic account is published, converting the 29% adoption rate—or any other usage statistic—into a share of GDP would be misleading.

What could weaken the improvement
The current figures do not remove the economy’s vulnerabilities. The IMF has highlighted geopolitical and demand risks, while interest rates, energy costs and trade conditions can all affect services, production and investment.
The Bank of England has also described a downside AI scenario: if productivity and commercial benefits prove smaller than expected, weaker investment could reduce global GDP and depress U.K. asset prices. That is a risk scenario, not a prediction that AI investment will fail.

What to watch next
- Services versus production: Continued service growth alongside a stabilisation in production would make the expansion broader.
- Business investment: Further ICT and machinery spending, followed by stronger output per worker, would provide firmer evidence of an AI and automation payoff.
- Small-firm adoption: A narrowing gap between the largest companies and smaller businesses would show that AI is diffusing through the economy rather than remaining concentrated.
- Official measurement: The ONS thematic account should clarify how intangible assets and AI-enabled work are captured in GDP and productivity statistics.
- Downside shocks: Energy prices, conflict, weaker external demand or tighter financial conditions could reverse investment and output gains.
The defensible conclusion is measured optimism: U.K. output has held up, services and capital spending are supporting growth, and AI is becoming economically relevant. The size of AI’s contribution to national GDP remains an open statistical question, and the durability of the recovery will depend on whether adoption produces broad, repeatable productivity gains.
