“Minecraft server lag” is not one problem. It is usually either server tick lag, network latency, or client-side frame-rate lag. The fastest way to separate them is to check the server’s TPS and MSPT, then compare those readings with the affected player’s ping and FPS.
Paper servers include the spark profiler from version 1.21 onward, giving you a practical path from symptom to evidence. The workflow below shows what each metric means, which commands to run, how to catch brief spikes, and what to change once you know where the delay is.

Players use the word lag for several different delays. A server can calculate game ticks too slowly; the connection between one player and the server can be unstable; or the player’s own computer can render frames too slowly. Those failures feel similar in chat, but they require different fixes.
The three-way split used in many community guides is a practical triage model rather than an official Paper or spark taxonomy. It is still useful because each category has a different measurement:

- Server-side tick lag: the main server thread misses its tick budget, affecting everyone or most players.
- Network latency: the server keeps running normally, but packets take too long or arrive inconsistently for one or more players.
- Client-side FPS lag: the affected player’s computer cannot render the scene smoothly, often because of shaders, view distance, or graphics settings.
Start with the server metrics before changing settings. A low TPS reading with high MSPT points to the server. TPS near 20 with one player reporting rubber-banding points away from the server and toward that player’s connection. TPS near 20 with low frames per second points to the client.
The metrics that distinguish the causes
TPS: how often the server completes ticks
Ticks are the server’s recurring game updates: entity movement, redstone, block updates, scheduled tasks, and other simulation work. The normal target is 20.0 ticks per second. At that rate, the server has 1,000 milliseconds to complete 20 ticks.
When the server cannot finish a tick in time, the effective TPS falls. A sustained value well below 20 means the whole simulation is running behind, so players commonly see delayed block breaking, slow mob movement, delayed redstone, and rubber-banding.
MSPT: the time consumed by each tick
MSPT means milliseconds per tick: the time the CPU needed to calculate one game tick. Spark’s documentation sets a normal, lag-free target at 50 ms or less per tick. The relationship is direct: 1,000 ms ÷ 20 ticks = 50 ms per tick.
A tick that takes 75 ms allows only about 13.3 ticks per second if that cost continues. MSPT is often more revealing than TPS because it shows how much capacity remains. A server reporting 20 TPS at 15 MSPT has considerable headroom; one reporting 20 TPS at 45 MSPT is close to its limit and can fall behind as soon as a heavier task runs.
Spark reports minimum, maximum, median, and 95th-percentile MSPT, with green, amber, or red status colouring. Look beyond the average. A server can process most ticks in roughly 20 ms yet occasionally spend about 300 ms on one tick, creating a visible pause even when the headline TPS looks healthy.

Sleep percentage: spare capacity
Sleep percentage represents time when the server thread is waiting rather than working. Spark guidance treats less than about 5% sleep time as a warning that the server is effectively busy all the time and has little spare capacity. A high TPS number with almost no sleep time is therefore not the same as a comfortably idle server.
Use symptoms to identify the likely type
| What players observe | Likely cause | First check |
|---|---|---|
| TPS is well below 20 and most players experience the same delays | Server tick lag | MSPT statistics and a spark profile |
| TPS is about 20, but one player rubber-bands or reports high ping | Network latency | That player’s ping, packet loss, and route to the server |
| TPS is about 20, but one player’s frame rate is low or stutters | Client-side FPS lag | The player’s FPS, render settings, and shader use |
| TPS drops briefly at regular or random intervals | A tick spike, such as garbage collection or a heavy task | /spark tickmonitor, followed by a thresholded profile |
These categories can overlap. A busy server can create genuine tick lag while a distant player also has high ping, and a low-end laptop can have poor FPS while every other player sees a healthy server. Diagnose each symptom separately instead of assuming one cause explains every report.
Step-by-step: diagnose server-side lag with spark
1. Confirm that spark is available
Paper bundles spark starting with Paper 1.21. On older Paper versions, or on another server implementation, spark may need to be installed separately. Command names and flags can change between releases, so check the documentation for the exact server version before relying on a flag in production.
2. Take a quick TPS and MSPT reading
- Open the server console or an operator-enabled in-game chat.
- Run
/spark tps. - Record the current TPS, MSPT distribution, and sleep percentage rather than looking only at a colour or single average.
- Ask whether the reading was captured while players were reproducing the problem. An idle lobby can look healthy even when a farm, dimension, or exploration activity causes the real slowdown.
The older /tps and /mspt commands may still work, but Paper positions spark as their replacement. Paper also marks the older timings command as deprecated.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute3. Profile sustained lag
- Keep the server under the workload that produces the slowdown: players in the affected area, active farms, exploration, or the relevant minigame.
- Run
/spark profiler start --timeout 600for a 10-minute capture. - Wait for spark to finish. It returns a report URL.
- Open the report and note which operations consume the most total time and which operations consume the most self time.
A profile taken after the lag has stopped can be technically valid but practically unhelpful. Reproduce the issue during the capture so the expensive path appears in the data.
4. Catch short spikes with tickmonitor
Long profiles can miss a one-off pause. Run /spark tickmonitor to watch for ticks that exceed a threshold. The default threshold is 100% above the average. If you need an absolute threshold, use --threshold-tick 50 to flag ticks over 50 ms.

5. Profile only the bad ticks
After tickmonitor shows when the spikes occur, narrow the profile to expensive ticks. Spark’s guide gives /spark profiler --only-ticks-over 150 as an example. If that misses the problem, lower the cutoff; a Paper troubleshooting example uses:
/spark profiler start --only-ticks-over 100 --timeout 300
A 300-second capture with a 100 ms cutoff records the ticks that cross that limit instead of filling the report with normal work. If your monitor shows smaller but still visible spikes, try a lower value such as 70 ms, while remembering that exact flag syntax and supported options are version-dependent.
6. Follow the expensive branch in the report
In the report, compare total time with self time. Total time includes child calls; self time is the work performed directly by that operation. Follow the largest branches until you reach a recognizable plugin, mod, entity-processing path, world-generation task, or other source. Spark’s Sources view helps connect hot paths with likely plugins or mods.
Common sources of server tick lag
The following causes are repeatedly identified by community server guides. Treat them as investigation targets, not proof: the profile should show which one is consuming the tick budget on your server.
Plugins and mods
A plugin or mod can run expensive code on the main thread, perform frequent scans, or react to events for every entity and block. Disable or update one suspect at a time in a test copy, then reproduce the same workload. Removing several components simultaneously makes it difficult to identify the actual regression and can hide a dependency problem.
Ticking blocks and redstone systems
Large redstone machines, rapidly changing farms, and blocks with scheduled updates can generate continuous work. Test by temporarily stopping the machine or isolating the affected chunk. If MSPT falls immediately, redesign the clock, reduce the number of active components, or keep the machine unloaded when nobody needs it.

Entity-heavy areas
Dense mob farms, item piles, villagers, minecarts, and other entities can dominate tick work. Move players away from the area and compare the profile, then reduce unnecessary entities or spread the workload across separate locations. A profile branch named tickEntities is a useful clue that entity processing deserves inspection, but it does not identify which entity or plugin is responsible by itself.
World generation and chunk loading
Exploring new terrain can create short or sustained load as chunks generate and load. If lag begins when players travel rapidly into unexplored regions, compare a profile during exploration with one in an established area. Pre-generating terrain in a controlled maintenance window can shift that cost away from peak play, but the right tool and settings depend on your server software and version.
Garbage-collection pauses
Community guides associate periodic drops with Java garbage collection, especially when a server uses more than roughly 85% of its allocated memory. A repeating pattern such as a drop to about 10 TPS every 30 seconds is a clue worth checking in the server log and profiler. It is not a universal threshold: changing the heap size blindly can make pauses worse, so correlate the timing with memory and GC messages before adjusting Java options.
How to fix server tick lag after you find it
- Reproduce and measure first. Save the TPS, MSPT distribution, sleep percentage, and a profile while the issue is visible.
- Identify the dominant path. Use total versus self time and the Sources view to distinguish a plugin, mod, entities, blocks, chunk work, or a JVM pause.
- Reduce the workload. Stop or redesign pathological farms, cap unnecessary entities, limit simultaneous exploration, or remove the specific task shown in the profile.
- Change one variable at a time. Restart if required, repeat the same activity, and compare the new MSPT and spike pattern with the baseline.
- Keep the fix that improves the measured cause. A higher TPS number during an idle period is not evidence that the underlying workload is solved.
Do not treat more CPU or RAM as an automatic cure. Hardware can provide headroom, but a single main-thread operation that exceeds the tick budget will still produce lag. Profiling tells you whether capacity, a specific workload, or a periodic JVM pause is the limiting factor.

When the server is healthy but the connection lags
If TPS remains near 20 and MSPT stays comfortably below 50 ms while one player rubber-bands, the server is probably not the bottleneck. Check that player’s in-game ping and look for packet loss, Wi-Fi interference, VPN routing, overloaded home networking equipment, or physical distance from the host.
- Compare the affected player with someone on the same server but a different network.
- Test on wired Ethernet or a different Wi-Fi band to separate local wireless problems from the internet route.
- Stop large downloads, uploads, cloud backups, and streaming on the same connection.
- Check whether the problem affects only one region or internet service provider.
- Ask the host whether its uplink is saturated or whether there is a routing incident, but do not ask the host to “fix TPS” when the server metrics are normal.
Network latency can coexist with tick lag. Keep collecting server metrics while troubleshooting the connection so a real server regression is not missed.

When the problem is client-side FPS lag
Client lag is local rendering trouble, not a slow game simulation. The server can show about 20 TPS while one player sees stutter, a low frame rate, or delayed-looking camera movement. Shaders are a common trigger because they add substantial GPU work.
Checks for the affected player
- Display the FPS counter and record the frame rate during the exact scene that feels slow.
- Disable shaders temporarily. A large improvement identifies rendering load rather than server tick time.
- Lower render distance, simulation distance, particles, entity shadows, and other visual settings one at a time.
- Close overlays and background applications that consume GPU or CPU resources.
- Update graphics drivers and confirm that Minecraft is using the intended discrete GPU on a laptop.
- Compare a quiet area with an entity-dense base. If only one location causes frame drops, reduce local visual and entity load rather than changing server TPS settings.
Low FPS does not explain high ping, and lowering graphics settings will not repair a server whose MSPT is already over budget. Treat the frame-rate reading and the server reading as separate measurements.

Understanding brief, recurring lag spikes
Some servers feel fine most of the time but pause for a fraction of a second. The average MSPT may remain low while the maximum and 95th-percentile values reveal the spikes. A single roughly 300 ms tick among many 20 ms ticks is enough to produce a noticeable hitch.
Use tickmonitor to establish a threshold, then capture only ticks above that threshold. Look for a repeating schedule, which can suggest a periodic task or garbage collection, and compare the spike’s call tree with the normal profile. If the spike occurs only when players enter a new area, investigate chunk loading or world generation. If it follows a farm cycle, inspect scheduled block and entity work.
Sleep percentage is useful here: a server with almost no sleep time may be operating at its ceiling even when its average looks acceptable, leaving no margin for a sudden task.
A practical maintenance checklist
- Keep Paper and spark on versions compatible with your server and verify command flags after upgrades.
- Record a normal TPS, MSPT distribution, and sleep percentage so future incidents have a baseline.
- Profile during real player activity, not only when the server is empty.
- Use tickmonitor for intermittent problems and thresholded profiles for the offending ticks.
- Review entity-heavy farms, redstone clocks, scheduled tasks, and exploration patterns after major world or plugin changes.
- Watch logs and memory behaviour when lag repeats on a fixed interval.
- Separate server, network, and client reports in support tickets: include TPS/MSPT, ping, FPS, location, and the activity that triggers the symptom.
The most reliable “Minecraft server lag fix” is therefore a diagnosis, not a universal setting: measure the tick loop, verify the player’s network and FPS when appropriate, and change the component that the evidence identifies.
