The best internet connection is the one available at your address that meets your household’s speed, reliability, and budget needs. Start by checking local availability, then compare actual plans—including upload speed, latency, total contract cost, and equipment—instead of choosing by technology name alone.
Start with what is available at your address
Internet options vary by location, and a technology that is ideal in principle is not useful if it is not offered where you live. Check address-level availability before comparing connection types or advertised speeds.
Check availability in the United States
Use the FCC National Broadband Map to search your address. Its fixed-broadband view lists reported fiber, cable, DSL, satellite, and fixed wireless options, along with maximum advertised download and upload speeds. The map displays mobile coverage separately from fixed services.
The map reports provider-submitted availability; it does not establish the service you will actually receive, its affordability, or whether people at the address subscribe. In the map’s fixed-service view, options below 25 Mbps download are hidden by default; filtering can reveal them. That is a map display setting, not a recommendation about the speed your household needs. If the listing appears wrong, the FCC provides a process to challenge broadband availability information. An availability challenge is different from a complaint that service you already receive performs below expectations.

UK readers can use Ofcom’s address checker to see what is available, then compare deals for that address. Contract rules, consumer protections, and plan terms vary by country, so use the rules that apply where you live.
What are the main types of internet connection?
Each connection type uses different infrastructure. The label helps explain how service reaches your home, but it does not guarantee a particular speed or level of reliability.
Fiber
Full fiber, also called fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP), runs optical fiber all the way to the home. Part-fiber services use fiber for only part of the route, with another medium completing the connection. Ofcom says full fiber usually offers faster, more reliable speeds than part fiber at a similar price, but that is general guidance, not a promise about an individual plan. Check which kind of fiber a provider actually offers at your address. Ofcom’s broadband guidance

- A New Way to WiFi: Deco Mesh technology gives you a better WiFi experience in all directions with faster WiFi speeds and strong WiFi signal to cover your whole home.
- Better Coverage than traditional WiFi routers: Deco S4 three units work seamlessly to create a WiFi mesh network that can cover homes up to 5, 500 square feet. No dead zone anymore.
- Seamless and Stable WiFi Mesh: Rather than wifi range extender that need multiple network names and passwords, Deco S4 allows you to enjoy seamless roaming throughout the house, with a single network name and password.
- Incredibly fast 3× 3 6 Stream AC1900 speeds makes the deco capable of providing connectivity for up to 100 devices.
- With advanced Deco Mesh Technology, units work together to form a unified network with a single network name. Devices automatically switch between Decos as you move through your home for the fastest possible speeds.
Cable
Cable broadband commonly uses fiber for feeder sections of the network and coaxial cable for streets, buildings, and the connection to premises. The European Commission describes cable networks using this combination. Cable can be a strong option where it is offered, but compare the specific plan’s download and upload speeds, price, and service terms rather than assuming every cable connection performs alike. European Commission technology comparison
DSL
DSL sends data over copper telephone wires. Its performance depends on line characteristics and distance, so the DSL label alone cannot tell you what speed you will get. Check the address-specific estimate and available alternatives.
Fixed wireless
Fixed wireless provides a home connection over radio rather than through a cable running to the premises. Availability and performance depend on location. A fixed-wireless home service is not the same thing as a mobile coverage map, so verify that a provider offers a fixed plan at your address.

Cellular home broadband
Some providers offer home broadband over a 4G or 5G mobile network. Coverage maps have limits: the FCC’s mobile map reflects expected connection outdoors or in a moving vehicle and does not show indoor coverage. A mobile coverage indication therefore does not, on its own, establish how well a home service will work inside your home. FCC broadband map consumer information

Satellite can serve remote homes where wired options are limited. Geostationary (GEO) satellites and low-Earth-orbit (LEO) systems work differently: GEO systems involve longer signal paths, while LEO systems use moving satellites and handovers and can reduce latency. These are technology-level distinctions, not guarantees about a particular provider’s service, speed, or latency. European Commission technology comparison

Match speed to your use
Ofcom gives these broad consumer speed guideposts. They are rough guidance—not an individualized calculation, a guarantee of delivered speed, or a comparison of all available plans.
| Ofcom speed guidepost | Example uses in Ofcom’s guidance |
|---|---|
| Up to 30 Mbit/s | Basic browsing, email, and standard video |
| 30–300 Mbit/s | Common uses such as working from home, video calls, and streaming |
| 300 Mbit/s or more | Several simultaneous users or heavier streaming, online gaming, and large downloads |
Think about how many people use the connection at once and what they do. For calls, gaming, and remote work, do not focus only on download speed: check upload speed, latency, and consistency too. The available plan’s advertised figures are useful for comparison but do not guarantee real-world performance.

Check the equipment requirement
Find out whether the provider includes or requires a compatible modem, gateway, or router. A Wi-Fi router distributes the connection around your home; it does not supply the internet connection itself. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is fiber better than cable?
Full fiber is often faster and more reliable than part-fiber service for a similar price, according to Ofcom. But that comparison does not mean every fiber plan will outperform every cable plan at every address. Compare the actual offers available to you, including download and upload speeds, latency and consistency, total cost, installation, contract terms, and equipment.
Is satellite internet a good choice for rural areas?
Satellite may be a practical option when a remote address has few wired choices. Its suitability depends on the service offered and the household’s needs. The GEO-versus-LEO distinction can help explain potential latency differences, but technology descriptions do not predict an individual plan’s performance. Compare satellite with any available fixed wireless, cellular home broadband, DSL, cable, or fiber offers using the same plan criteria.
