In Type Soul, the three powers belong to different character factions: Quincy use Schrift, Soul Reapers use Shikai, and Arrancar use Resurrección (often shortened to “Res”). They are not three interchangeable choices for one character. The key differences are the faction that uses each system, its place in that faction’s progression, and the specific ability or form a character receives.
Public guides and wikis offer useful broad descriptions, but they are community-authored rather than developer-confirmed. Unlock details and balance can change with patches, so use current in-game prompts when a guide conflicts with what you see.

That broad description identifies Schrift’s role, but it does not establish a complete, current list of Schrift options or a reliable move-by-move account for every one.

For that reason, treat a Schrift name as the start of your research rather than a guarantee of how it performs in the current patch. Check the current game and up-to-date community information for the specific ability effects you want to understand; avoid assuming an older roster or ranking still applies.
What Shikai does for a Soul Reaper
Shikai is a Soul Reaper’s initial released form of their zanpakuto. A May 2026 community guide says Shikai grants a unique ability tied to a Tag and Released Shikai Element (RSE). In other words, “Shikai” names the release system, while the particular Tag and RSE help determine what ability a character gets.

Community-described unlock route
The May 2026 Shikai guide summarizes the route as reaching Grade 2, obtaining an Asauchi, meditating, and completing an Inner World event. A separate progression guide summarizes it as reaching Grade 2, meditating repeatedly, and then fighting the zanpakuto spirit. Since those summaries do not phrase the prerequisites identically, treat them as guide descriptions—not a definitive, patch-proof checklist.

Follow the prompts currently shown in the game, especially if your character’s grade, inventory, or meditation progress does not match a guide. Do not rely on a precise number of meditation sessions or a location detail unless it is confirmed by the current game.

What Resurrección does for an Arrancar
Resurrección, commonly shortened to “Res,” is the Arrancar release path. How to compare the three systems
- Start with faction: Schrift is for Quincy, Shikai is for Soul Reapers, and Resurrección is for Arrancar. These are faction-specific systems, not a menu of powers available to every character.
- Then consider progression: Shikai is described as the initial zanpakuto release. Schrift is the Quincy power or element system and is associated with Vollständig. Resurrección has a path that community guidance describes through Partial Res, Full Res, and Segunda Etapa.
- Finally, check the particular ability: a system’s name alone does not tell you the exact moves or current strength of a character’s roll or form. Confirm the specific ability in the current version of the game.
