If your Android phone’s keyboard feels too wide, try changing its layout before installing a different app. Microsoft SwiftKey offers split-thumb, one-handed, and floating modes designed to change how the keys sit on screen. Which feels best depends on your phone, how you hold it, and what you type; the available documentation does not establish a universal speed or accuracy winner.
Choose a layout for how you hold your phone
On a large phone, the useful distinction is often not one keyboard app versus another, but a full-width layout versus one that changes key placement or reach. SwiftKey documents five modes: Full, One-handed, Float, Thumb, and Tablet. Their availability and behavior can vary with device, orientation, and app version, so use the names as starting points and test them on your phone.
Thumb mode for two-handed typing
Thumb mode splits the keyboard into left and right halves, bringing keys closer to the thumbs when you hold the phone in both hands. Microsoft SwiftKey Support describes it as potentially useful on larger devices or in landscape. This is the most direct layout to try if the center of a full-width keyboard feels hard to reach.

One-handed mode for a smaller reach
One-handed mode makes the keyboard compact and lets you snap it to either side. Try the side that matches the hand you are using. The reduced width may improve reach, but it also leaves less room for each key, so check whether tapping and correction still feel comfortable.

Float mode when placement matters
Float turns the keyboard into a movable layout that you can reposition by tapping and dragging. It can help when a docked keyboard blocks part of an app, but moving it may also cover other content. Check the placement while composing and editing, not just when the keyboard first opens.
Full and Tablet modes
Full is the standard docked layout. Tablet mode is another documented SwiftKey option, but its name alone does not establish that it will be more comfortable on a particular phone. Compare it on your device rather than assuming the mode behaves identically across screen sizes.
How to change SwiftKey’s mode

Tap the three-dot menu on the keyboard toolbar, then choose Modes.

Choose Thumb, One-handed, or Float to test the layout that matches your grip and screen-placement needs. Select Full or Tablet if you want to compare the other documented modes.

Type a few sentences, use punctuation, and edit a word. Notice whether your thumbs can reach comfortably and whether the keyboard obscures anything you need to see.

Compare typing features as well as layout
A comfortable shape is only one part of mobile typing. SwiftKey documents resizing and repositioning, Flow swipe typing, and input in multiple languages. Those are features to evaluate against your habits—not proof that the app will make you faster or more accurate.
- Reach: Compare a full-width keyboard with a split layout for two thumbs or a compact layout for one-handed use.
- Screen placement: Decide whether you prefer a keyboard docked at the bottom or one you can move, and check what it covers in the apps you use.
- Input style: If you swipe across letters rather than tap each key, try Flow. Also test predictions, corrections, and editing in ordinary messages or notes.
- Languages: SwiftKey supports multiple languages; confirm that the languages and layouts you need are available in the current app.

When to consider Gboard or a physical keyboard
Gboard
Gboard is available through its Google Play listing. The Google help material consulted for this guide covers language setup, but does not verify a phone split-layout equivalent to SwiftKey’s Thumb mode. If you prefer Gboard, check the current app and its settings on your device for the layout and language options you need.
Compact Bluetooth keyboard
For longer writing, a compact Bluetooth keyboard for Android can be an alternative to typing on glass. It adds a separate device, and phone compatibility can vary. Before choosing one, confirm that your phone supports the pairing method, that the keyboard’s layout suits you, and whether you need the on-screen keyboard to remain visible.

Make the choice on your own device
Start with the layout change that addresses your main discomfort: Thumb for two-handed reach, One-handed for a compact keyboard at either side, or Float when you need to reposition the keys. Then try the same short passage with your usual language and input style. Keep the option that makes reaching, correcting, and viewing the screen feel manageable in the apps you actually use.
