Two-point lighting uses a key light to shape a subject and a fill light to soften the shadows the key creates. The setup can use two lamps, but it can also combine a lamp with daylight, ambient light, flash or a reflector. Adjusting the fill—not simply adding more lights—is what determines whether a face looks softly lit or dramatically shadowed.
What two-point lighting does
The key is the main, directional source: its position and character establish the light’s direction and shape on the subject. The fill is a second source, or reflected or ambient light, that lifts the key’s shadows. A two-point setup does not inherently light the background or create a bright outline around the subject; those are separate lighting jobs often handled by additional sources. “Two-point” describes the key-and-fill relationship, not necessarily two powered fixtures. For example, sunlight can be the key and a flash can fill the shadows; a reflector can redirect existing light toward the shadow side. Cambridge in Colour’s portrait guide discusses these alternatives.

- Place the key. Put the main light to one side of the subject so it establishes the direction of the facial shadows. For a filmed interview, Brad Stoddard’s film and video handout illustrates a key at about 45 degrees and a frontal fill; treat that as a starting arrangement, not a fixed rule.
- Add fill toward the shadow side. Start near the camera axis if you want to reduce the visibility of new shadows from the fill itself. A reflector or bounced light can serve this role without a second powered lamp.
- Adjust fill strength by the look you want. Raise it to reveal more shadow detail and soften contrast; lower it to retain deeper, more dramatic shadows. If fill approaches the key in intensity, facial modeling can become flat.
- Check for unwanted double shadows and reflections. A hard fill placed far off-axis can cast its own conspicuous shadow. A softer, larger source or a position closer to the camera line can make that shadow less apparent. On-axis placement may constrain where the light can go and can create direct reflections.
- Recheck the result in the final medium. Look at the face in the camera or video frame, not just at the setup. Make sure the shadow retains the amount of detail the scene needs.
In studio portraits, the key gives the face shape and the fill opens the far-side shadows. For an interview, the same arrangement controls facial contrast; add a backlight only if you also want edge separation. Outdoors, use sunlight as the key and flash as fill, or redirect sunlight or ambient light with a reflector. A reflector’s effect depends on its material and distance from the subject.

Choose the fill method and position

Set fill strength without treating ratios as rules
More fill generally means weaker shadows and lower contrast; less fill leaves more pronounced shadows. The look you want matters more than a universal ratio. Cambridge in Colour recommends starting with roughly one part fill for every two parts main light, while noting that placement and the intended result affect the choice. The page’s exact publication date is not stated; its footer carries copyright through 2020.
Ratio labels are not consistent across lighting explanations. Some describe the relative output of the key and fill sources; others compare total illumination in highlights with illumination in shadows. Under the additive convention in Stoddard’s 2007 handout, equal-brightness key and fill sources produce a 2:1 highlight-to-shadow ratio: both sources reach the highlight side, while only fill reaches the shadow side. Those figures cannot be compared directly with source-output ratios unless the convention is clear.

FUJIFILM UK’s examples use its own intensity convention: equal key and fill intensity (1:1) can remove facial shadows and look flat; it describes 2:1 as high-key with little shadow and 8:1 as more dramatic. Its page does not state an exact publication date. These are instructional examples, not universal exposure targets. When describing a ratio, state whether it compares source strengths or total highlight-to-shadow illumination.

Diagnose common results
- The face looks flat: reduce fill so the key’s direction and shadow shape become more visible.
- The shadow side loses too much detail: increase fill or bring a reflector closer to the subject.
- A second shadow appears: soften the fill or move it closer to the camera axis.
- The scene feels too bright or too soft: reduce fill rather than automatically moving the key; the key establishes the principal direction and shape.
