A resident’s report of an inscribed stone block has led archaeologists to two colossal royal statues at Bahbit Al-Higara (Bahbeit Al-Higara) in Egypt’s Gharbia Governorate. One statue is identified as Ramesses II and may originally have stood about 8.5 metres high. The second is probably another image of Ramesses II, but officials have not confirmed that attribution.

Who found the statues?

Khaled el-Shahat, a resident working on land in front of his house at Bahbit Al-Higara, discovered an inscribed stone block and immediately notified Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, according to Live Science. The report triggered a rescue mission affiliated with Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities. Excavators then uncovered the surviving parts of two large royal statues.

The discovery began with a local resident rather than a planned monument survey. Egypt’s Antiquities authorities have credited the prompt report with allowing the remains to be documented and excavated.

Where were they found?

The statues were found on the western side of the Bahbit Al-Higara temple complex in Gharbia Governorate, northern Egypt. The site is known for the remains of a major temple dedicated to Isis, along with other granite architectural elements. Excavation and study are continuing, so the precise original arrangement of the statues and their relationship to nearby blocks are not yet established.

What survives of the two statues?

Find Surviving evidence What officials infer
First statue A head about 1.60 metres high and the upper part of a back pillar The complete monument, including its base, may have stood approximately 8.5 metres high
Second statue An upper section about 2.40 metres long; the legs and base are missing, and the top of the nemes headdress is damaged Its visible facial features resemble the first statue, suggesting—but not proving—that it also represented Ramesses II

The 8.5-metre figure is an estimate based on the scale of the surviving head. It describes the statue’s projected original height, not the height of the fragment now preserved. The second measurement refers to the length of its surviving section, not to the statue’s original height.

Why is the first statue identified as Ramesses II?

The first statue shows the king wearing the Double Crown, called the pschent, which combines the crowns of Upper and Lower Egypt. Egyptian antiquities officials describe it as a symbol of unified rule over the two lands.

The upper part of the statue’s back pillar preserves the Horus name “Hor-Ka-Nakht-Mery-Maat.” A nearby pink-granite block, approximately 1.30 metres long, retains hieroglyphs naming Ramesses II with the titles “Nesw-Bity,” meaning “King of Upper and Lower Egypt,” and “Sa-Ra,” meaning “Son of Ra.” Together, the royal imagery, name and titles provide the basis for identifying the first monument.

Is the second statue definitely Ramesses II?

No. Officials regard the second statue as a likely representation of Ramesses II because its facial features resemble those of the first statue. However, its surviving section does not yet provide an equally clear identifying inscription. Until excavation reveals more text or other diagnostic evidence, the attribution remains provisional.

This distinction matters: the first statue has direct naming evidence associated with the find, while the second is identified primarily by visual similarity and archaeological context. Authorities have not published an independent dating test or a peer-reviewed excavation report for the discovery.

Who was Ramesses II?

Ramesses II, whose reign is generally dated to about 1279–1213 B.C., was one of ancient Egypt’s longest-reigning and most extensively commemorated pharaohs. His monuments often carried royal names, divine associations and formal titles intended to present him as the legitimate ruler of a unified Egypt. The inscriptions at Bahbit Al-Higara follow that tradition by pairing his royal identity with the titles “King of Upper and Lower Egypt” and “Son of Ra.”
